Last remaining, original Triple XXX Thirst Station in the U.S. Proudly serving 100% top sirloin ground fresh daily in our kitchen. There are no fillers or anything added to our sirloin burgers. All burgers made to order, hand pattied the same way since 1929.

We hand cut our grilled tenderloin sandwich using center cut pork tenderloin. Our pulled pork BBQ is made fresh in our kitchen.

We proudly serve meats from our local supplier; Beutler Meat Processing family owned and operated in Lafayette, Indiana.

Serving the original recipe Triple XXX pure cane sugar premium root beer since 1895. Glover’s premium real ice cream for our shakes, floats and frosts.

Duane Purvis peanut butter burger featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Drew Brees breakfast special along with breakfast served all day 24 hours.

Scratch made chili, potato salad and cole slaw.

Counter service for 48, cash only and open 24 hours Monday through Saturday; Sunday until 10:00 PM, open Mondays at 6:00 AM.

History

Established in 1929.

: In 1895 in Galveston, Texas, the «XXX» brand was created. Over 100 «Thirst Stations» along with 150 bottlers throughout the U.S. and Canada distributed the The Triple XXX brand of soft drinks.

Bert Wright opened this Triple XXX Thirst Station in 1929 selling Triple XXX premium pure cane sugar root beer.

This location is the last, original remaining «Thirst Station» in the United States still utilizing part of the original structure. With remodeling the restaurant has expanded to 48 counter service.

Greg Ehresman started working at the Triple XXX Family Restaurant in 1969 when he was 14. Greg mixed the Triple XXX root beer by hand in the basement cold room using a stainless steel paddle that he still has as a keepsake.

Greg and Carrie Ehresman purchased the Triple XXX Family Restaurant from Greg’s parents on April 1, 1999.

Greg’s love and passion for the XXX root beer came full circle on January 1, 2008 when he purchased the Triple Root Beer brand.

This is a decent burger spot. It’s in the middle of a college town and always packed with people. It’s a cash only business and everything is prepared really quickly and piping hot. I realized that I was the only BP there out of 150 people and I could tell my presence was not a «normal» occurrence. If you enjoy a protective eurocentric bubble where diversity doesn’t exist, this place is perfect for you! If your a foodie, missing this place won’t contribute to any loss of sleep. I saw a billboard for it on the way to Cincinnati from Chicago and decided to go after my normal spot (Ludy’s) closed down without explanation. I ordered the boilermaker. Best thing about this spot is the burgers are made from scratch (I think) and regardless of the number of people present the food came really quickly. Burgers definitely could’ve used more seasoning. The cheese made the burger in this case. Without it this would have gotten two stars for sure.

Not bad. I only went here because it’s part of the Purdue bucket list to try the Duane Purvis (a hamburger with peanut butter), which actually turned out pretty good. But I could’ve lived without this Purdue tradition. It owes most of its popularity and business to the fact that it is part of the Purdue culture.

Was in town and met a friend who was a Purdue grad. She raved about this place and I thought she was just reliving her college days. We went and I was surprised by the place’s charm and the staff. They were very kind about explaining all the people after whom dishes were named. i had a burger and fries. Both were fine (fries were actually pretty darn good!), but the root beer was out of this world. I’d go back just for that.

Ever since September when I missed getting to eat here, I have been dying to come back to Boiler country to try Triple XXX. The diner is perched on the hill on the East Side of Campus. The infrastructure is the same as it was back when it first opened which is really neat to see. There are about 10 parking spots on either side that surround the outside eating area.
My posé and I arrived around 4:30 because we were going to the basketball game. The service was fast since there were only a couple people in at the time. However, once we left, there was a line out the door. It definitely has the «old school diner» vibe with vintage photos lining the walls. The seating is at at a bar. The bar extends from the kitchen in a «T» shape that allows people to eat and face other customers. I would suggest taking no more than six people to eat here if you are eating inside because it can be annoying to lean and try to listen to what people say. If you have or six people, you can sit at the end of the «T» which allows the party to sit in a semi circle.
The root beer here is to die for! It has a bold flavor and a full body to accompany it. It is darker than «A&W» which has more of a crème taste. The Peanut Butter Burger came right off the grill. It had lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, cheese, and peanut butter. The patty itself is pressed thin, sort of like Steak n’ Shakes. I thought I wouldn’t like it, but I really enjoyed the flavor combination. I ordered it with sweet potato fries. A icing with maple syrup dipping sauce came with the fries. It was interesting as that I usually don’t dip my sweet potato fries in anything.
The service here is fast and the servers are friendly. THEY ONLY TAKE CASH. Triple XXX offers memorabilia to take home such as four packs of root beer, mugs, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. My total for my meal was $ 12.15. Is it more expensive than McDonalds across the street? Sure.
Go for the experience and the food is just a bonus.

I agree with several other reviews that it’s popular out of campus tradition at Purdue University. It was good certainly but it’s not a «must have». Their food is nothing extraordinary. I tried the Duane Pervis (burger with peanut butter). I thought it would be cool to try something from TV show. (Diners, drive ins, and dives). It tasted like an average burger with peanut butter. No explosion of flavor or anything. Pretty boring. Fries were good, shakes were good
From what I heard even Guy Fieri said he disliked that burger on the show.

I have been waiting so long to try this place! It did not disappoint. We got Pete’s Boilermaker with pickles for me and with mayo for the hubby. The meat was juicy and dripping. The grilled onions were perfect! We got the curly fries, which were seasoned perfectly and not salty at all. I just wish there were more of them. My basket had half of what my husband had on his basket.
It was def good stuff. I can see why it is so popular. Delicious and I can’t wait to hit them up again!

Iconic restaurant in West Lafayette with nostalgic counter service. Basic burgers and fries and certainly better than any chain food establishment. While enjoyable and fun, and a nice place to take your student, I can’t say that I’d rush back because it was so memorable. Fresh burger, white bread bun and sweet potato fries.

We came here for dinner on a Thursday night because the place is on the way to the bars. It seemed like a place you drive up to and eat in your car, kinda like a sonic. We ordered inside but took to eat our food outside. The waitress was trying to rush us into ordering something even though the place wasn’t busy. My friend decided to go with a peanut butter burger and fries, while I got the BLT. The BLT was just your normal BLT and my friend said the burger was okay, so nothing special… especially for a place that was on triple D. Their fries were pretty good though and the price was decent. Typical dinner food.

The media attention may have killed this place. Too many people looking for the triple-D coolness that use to be here, and now it can be like Disney, with families milling about trying to figure things out.
The purvis burger, will knock your socks of, providing that you are a peanut butta luvva.
Fries and shakes are as God intended, freshly done an not made in a California food factory. Come for the Indiana simplicity, don’t linger, tip well, then please leave.

I don’t get it, I mean I have tried this place twice and on both occasions it was some of the worst food I have had that did not require opening a plastic wrapper or bag. I mean seriously how hungry do you have to be to eat such low quality food. The burgers can only be described as something they would serve in a grade school cafeteria. The fries are barely cooked and I guess the only saving grace is the root beer, but even that can’t save this place.
You know how some places beat hunger by a hair, this place can’t even do that.

Known as Indiana’s first drive-in (and of course being featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives) has given this diner a lot of hype. As other Unilocalers have stated, this is a place to mark off your foodie «must visit» list but after that, I would agree to venture out more.
We visited here on a Saturday morning and were very lucky to find two open seats, as a couple had just left. The inside is quite small and when we left, it was packed. I can only imagine the wait times for a weekend breakfast here. Our server was spot on and everyone was friendly. The dining room was cozy.
Our food came quickly. I ordered a full order of biscuits and gravy and unfortunately, I found it quite bland… it was missing any kind of flavor. My side order of hash browns was large for the price. We found out that you can order lunch or breakfast all day, so that’s a plus. My boyfriend ordered the Boilermaker Pete Burger. The burger and fries were delicious and a nice portion.
They are known for their famous root beer, as they even sell 6 packs of it to take home. I had a taste of it and although delicious, I didn’t find it the best. (Shhh…Mug n Bun has the best root beer.)
If already traveling thru Lafayette, I would stop in for a cheap, friendly meal but would not make a special trip. However, I do have it crossed off my foodie list now, so on to the next one.

I must said that Triple X was certainly good, but to me the legend almost overshadowed the simple goodness of a burger and fries.
We rolled in early, around 9:30 am on a Saturday, on our way to Chicago for the weekend. There were a few open stools for us to be seated immediately. But there are some indicators that this place can get busy easily and regularly.
She had a full order of Biscuits and Gravy. With was pretty standard, but the gravy could have used more pepper.
I had opted to get a burger and fries. The Boilermaker Pete was made well with ground serlion and was a good size. Bit it was not anything I would stand in line for.
Service was staffed with Purdue students and the
other guests seemed to be students trying to recover from a Friday night or a parents taking their kid out for breakfast.
Both meals were about $ 25 with tip.
I’d stop again if passing through Lafayette on a lazy weekend, but not an trip in itself.

The epitome of an American diner. I knew I had to check this place out as it is a local joint and has been featured on Diners, drive-ins, and dives. Walking in, the restaurant is small and all seats are set up in a circular fashion. I also noticed the customers were an eclectic mix, made up of students, the elderly, and professionals in full out suits
I ordered the Bernie flowers all pro and added a fried egg. It also comes with a side (I chose fries). The burger itself was good, but you probably could have gotten a burger just as good somewhere else for cheaper. The fries were the typical thin cut ones you could have gotten at a fast food joint.
Glad I got to try a local staple, but it wasn’t amazing enough for me to return. Note: cash only!

This may be the best diner experience I’ve ever had. I was greeted instantly within walking in the door by nice people. Not «fake nice» people (I can’t stand «fake nice» people), but by genuinely nice people. And they did this I everyone that walked in. Old or young, man or woman, hot or average-looking, SEC or Big Ten, Purdue or IU, all were treated very well from my observations.
I ordered my food and it came out fast. Despite the speedy service, it was amazing. Burger and fries were on point, and that root beer is amazing. If God could pick one root beer to drink, this might quite possibly be it. And ask for the jalapeño ketchup. It’s good. I bought two bottles for home.
It is cash only (in my eyes, this is a sign of a great establishment). The walls are filled with décor of celebrities that have eaten there and random pics of Guy from the Food Network. I spent a lot of money because I bought jalapeño ketchup and root beer to go, but the food itself was fairly priced.
I’m told it can get quite busy here, so come during off-times to truly enjoy this place. This place has a good range of hours to satisfy all needs.
I’d make a trip back to Lafayette just for this place. It’s pretty damn good.

My all time favorite place to go to for breakfast! Breakfast is the most important part of the day might as well do it right.
I usually get the Triple X breakfast special which includes eggs, toast, hash browns, bacon or sausage, the typical all american breakfast that everyone loves.
Triple X is the local greasy spoon diner that every Boilermaker must visit before graduating, just like jumping the tracks. Decorated in a boilermaker memorabilia, Triple X usually has a new dish commemorating a famous graduate such as the Boudia burger.
The own downfall is they only except cash which is what you get when you hit up a greasy spoon. However, there is an ATM inside or around the corner is a Chase and Pefcu ATM.
Overall, I definitely recommend hitting up Triple X for the great food and spirit. Boiler up!

I still remember the first time I visited Triple XXX with my dad when I was visiting Purdue for «Day on Campus» in 2007. It was about midnight when we finally drove in to town and I was skeptical at the sight of it. Not knowing the area I imagined us getting mugged here at a late hour. My dad said «no we are going! It’s been on the Food Network» and in we went.
I had the most amazing burger and curly fries. Whenever I go back to visit Purdue we always make sure to make a stop at Triple XXX. Back then it was open 24 hours and so it was often a stop after a night at the bars or even on a hungover morning. I was always able to order a hamburger before 10:30am (always a huge + on my books). The restaurant has booth seating and is decorated with lots of Purdue memorabilia. Some burgers are named after famous Purdue Alumni athletes like Drew Brees and David Boudia. They only accept cash as payment but if you are caught without cash they do have an ATM machine inside the restaurant. This place is a definite must stop if you’re in Boiler Nation.
