History

Established in 1938.

John & Pete’s Fine Wine and Spirits has been owned and operated by John Pene and Pete Burra Sr. since Thanksgiving Day 1938.

They started out in a small rented building two hundred feet from their present location. Within a year’s time they bought a lot and built their own store.

During the Second World War, John and Pete alternated waiting on customers and building airplanes at a defense plant.

After the war, with the boom of the late forties and early fifties, it became necessary for them to increase the size of their store from the original 1200 square feet to the present 5,000 square feet to accommodate the tremendous increase in nationally advertised products.

Along with this area growth, the working staff has increased from two to fourteen full time employees to meet the growing demand for services and advice to the consumer.

Pete Burra Jr., the son of Pete Burra Sr. (who opened the store in 1938), has owned and operated John & Pete’s since 1972. Over the past 40 years, Pete has continued to grow the business and expand the store’s wine, liquor, and beer selection. Pete also plans, caters, and provides beverages for all types of events around Southern California, big and small. Most days, he can be found at the back of the store hard at work planning parties.
