We specialize in getting you to your black belt. What does that mean exactly? We will help you become more flexible, agile, and improve your endurance. You will learn to focus better mentally and physically. You will learn to overcome stress better, get in shape and lose weight and gain the confidence and drive that will make you successful in your life.

Children in particular learn to be more focused, improve their grades and mannerism, along with lifelong lessons that will improve their chances for success. Shy kids learn to come out of shell more. Kids suffering from ADD or ADHD will improve dramatically, and become easier to handle.

Our goal is your success. Whatever your intent and goals are, we are here for you!

History

Established in 1992.

West Hills Karate Academy/​Academy Of Karate was started as World Karate Academy in a park program. Stoner Park, West Los Angeles, was our first home. The Chief Instructor of the academy is Shihan Bruce Hojati. From the very onset, his goals have been to bring fitness, fellowship and integrity, to his community through karate training.

The current location opened in June of 1998, and has successfully helped thousands of students receive their first instructions in martial arts.

Meet the Manager

Manager

Shihan Bruce Hojati has trained for over 30 years in martial arts, with his primary focus on Japanese arts of Karate-​do (the way of the empty hand) and Kobudo (weaponry). Shihan Hojati is also ranked in Judo, Aikido and has trained in Jeet Kun Do (created by Bruce Lee), and Filipino Kali (stick fighting). He has written many articles from premier martial arts magazines, including Karate Illustrated, Master’s Magazine, and many more.

In 2002 he was licensed as a National Referee, by the USA National Karate-​do Federation the National Governing Body for karate in the USA.

His direct instructor is Master Toshiatsu Sasaki from Japan Karate-​do Federation. Master Sasaki is based in Sapporo Japan, and is a direct student of Late Master Nakayama, the founder of Japan Karate Association (JKA).

Master Hojati, is also a Realtor and Licensed Loan Originator, and works primarily in the west San Fernando Valley.

Shihan Bruce and his Senpai are excellent! My husband and I knew right from the start that this was the right dojo. Our son studied karate for 2yrs and then we moved to Woodland Hills from Hawai’i. When we met Shihan, he welcomed our son and daughter with open arms and open heart. Not only did he teach karate skills, but also respect, discipline, loyalty, passion and kindness. He is like a second dad to them. We love him and his whole family! That’s how he treated all the students and their parents. like FAMILY.

My son started training here at age 4. He is 13 now. We took a few years off but have been back for about 2 years and could not be happier with his training and the overall support we receive from this academy. It is not just about Karate it is about being a better person. My son’s overall attitude has changed, his grades are much better and his confidence is much improved. I highly recommend this karate program.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Sensei Hojati for a few years now. Instructors of his caliber in legitimate martial arts are very hard to find. I had had the pleasure of interacting with his students and have seen the results of sincere traditional martial arts instruction. Both he and his students are polite professional and dedicated to bettering themselves through the vehicle of Shotokan Karate. If you were looking for the real deal in Japanese/​Okinawan Karate I would gladly recommend my friend and colleague Bruce Hojati .

Both of my children studied under Sensei Bruce for many years (the oldest is off to college now). At the West Hills Karate Academy, they learned self-​discipline, patience, to persist even when they did not feel like continuing, and the good feeling that can only come from hard work. Sensei Bruce takes a personal interest in each and every student, and my son is still friends with Bruce today. There were times when Sensei Bruce challenged him, requiring him to reach deep and rise up to face both his fears and his struggles. Overall, the experience was incredibly value. On my bucket list is to study karate under Sensei Bruce one day:-)

What can I say about this karate academy? Well, let’s first start off with the fact that it is probably one of the only karate academies in existence that stays true to what martial arts is all about. It isn’t often enough that you pass by a martial arts school that is authentic and true to the real life lessons gained from real teachers of the martial way. From the get go, most of the schools I see (even when traveling around the nation) are commercialized and marketed with image, much less anything else. If you’re looking to sign up your son or daughter for real life lessons and values that will keep them strong for decades to come, this is your place, with an instructor who is nothing short of dedicating his life to it and giving the genuine «Karate Kid» stuff in daily practice. I was taught by many Sensei’s and have taught thousands of people martial arts myself holding a decent and humble ranking, but my beginnings were also with Shihan Hojati who I still call out of just plain old karate habit with the title «Sensei». I still harness many memories close to my heart of the experiences from close to 20 years ago!
