I’m keeping in mind that this is a 1-star motel, and am not comparing it to more expensive places. That being said… Yikes. I’ve lived in some rough places, but West Haven itself was a bit scary. Once I saw the Super 8 sign and realized where I would be staying, all I kept saying was«Oh nononono.» I was trying to be budget-conscious while visiting New Haven, and next time I think I’ll just stick to that part of town. When I walked into the motel, there was no one at the front desk, and no bell. But having no intention of going back outside, I waited. Eventually a woman emerged from a door labeled«staff only» so I greeted her with a smile and asked if she could help me or call for someone who could. She just stared at me as she kept walking away. Not a word. While I continued to wait, I looked around and found the interior to resemble a motel version of the Overlook Hotel from The Shining, so if you’re a fan of the movie you might be into that. Finally, a man came out from the same door and checked me in. There was nothing friendly about this exchange(almost like my business was a hassle to him), but also not explicitly rude. Walking into the room, I just kept wondering what I had gotten myself into. I’m no novice to the world of seedy motels, but I think this was the one that convinced me to go at least 2-star from here on out. Toilet was bubbling the whole night, but it became endearing after a while. The tap water was really gross, but that could be a regional thing; I really don’t know. Carpet and bedding were surprisingly clean, and there was a microwave and fridge. The pillows were also very comfy. I checked for bedbugs(something I always do when staying someplace), and am happy to report j didn’t find any. BUT, somewhere around 1am, an unidentified creature went scurrying across the room, going right beneath me as I sat at the desk. It was like some kind of deformed mouse, idk. It was pretty terrifying. The alarm clock didn’t work, but most people use their phones these days anyway. I DID manage to get some decent sleep, which was important. Not a ton of noise from other guests. There was also an AC/heater unit in the room, which was another plus. Forget breakfast. Come prepared to eat on your own, as the selection does not seem entirely edible. Morning staff also rude, more stare-downs, and they were bickering with each other without so much as a «hello» to guests. I was happy to check out and won’t be back.

This old, dingy motel is a dump that should be condemned! It is located in a dangerous neighborhood where you don’t feel safe. There are creepy people lurking inside and outside of the motel at all hours. When we arrived to check-in we couldn’t get anyone to come to the front desk. Finally an extremely unfriendly woman showed up. There is a weird smell throughout this motel and my husband got bug bites all over his back. The toilets don’t flush correctly and the sink was almost stopped up. The alarm clock was broken and the coffee maker in the room had no coffee and no coffee pot. The«free breakfast» which is served in a cramped area with no seating consisted of coffee and some sliced white bread next to a toaster so naturally we went out for breakfast. We couldn’t wait to check out of this hell hole! The good ratings this motel has received must have been done by the owners and their friends.

WHAT A DUMP! I’ve stayed at shady motels all around the country(touring musician) and this is in the top tier of putrid. I asked for a non-smoking room and was promptly given the ‘best one’(exact words used by guy at the front desk) which smelled like the inside of Patty and Selma’s lungs. When I asked to move rooms I was told the motel was full; it definitely wasn’t. Whatever. I also unfortunately left an expensive clothing item behind and phoned the Super 8 the next day(after I’d left town) and was told to send a FedEx scheduled pick up to retrieve the item. That was over a month ago and 3 schedlued FedEx attemps later and guess what — I’VENEVERGOTTHEITEM. I naively mentioned the clothing item was expensive to the Super 8 and have been given the run around so many times over the phone… «Oh, we don’t allow FedEx pickups, only family members…» «The FedEx guy never came…(provably false statement)…» «…we only keep items for a week and then we take them home…» The last time I called, the woman at the front desk clearly kept hanging up on me as soon as I mentioned the FedEx incident. My best guess is that one of the employees is wearing this item of clothing as I type. CONDEMNTHISHELLHOLE!!!

I definitely got my bang for my buck here the other night. Very affordable rate of $ 75 for the night. Although the front desk guy was a bit gruff and there was lots of renovation work being done on the first floor, the room itself was very nice. It was cozy, quiet, clean, with a nice bed and sheets. It also had several amenities that most cheaper motels don’t have: a microwave(which I couldn’t get to work), a refrigerator, and a nice flat screen TV with a wide range of stations. I wasn’t planning to stay the night in West Haven, but this was definitely a pleasant surprise. The area around the motel is a bit rough though.

Disgusting. Simply put. Superstorm Sandy ended up forcing me here as my other New Haven motels were full. The facility is not well kept. The carpets were extremely stained, and the minimum of cleaning was done in the rooms and halls. I need an electrical outlet for my laptop for work, and there was no easily accessible one. The mattress needed to be changed as it was lumpy. The only positive is the place is very close to downtown New Haven, and I-95 traffic is not an issue. Also I found decent restaurants nearby.

Checked in for one night for a wedding in West Haven. Place was a Shit Hole! No AC in the hallways. The room was in poor condition. It was a non smoking room, but it smelled like someone was chain smoking Camel non filters the night before. The sheets on the bed had cigarette burns. Staff was just ok. Not very friendly.
