Weschler’s Auctioneers & Appraisers

Went to their free first Thursday of the month appraisal day, where their website promoted «many specialists» on site available to review items – but warned that no more than five items were allowed. Additional items would be charged, but no mention on what that fee would be. I contacted the company by email ahead of time about several special individual bone china tea cup/​saucers made in England. «Judy» responded that I copy the stamp on the bottom of each of the cups to avoid bringing the breakable china in, which I thought was a helpful tip. I photographed the stamps along with photos of the china, and wrote out the identification of each item. I also had a few other small items, but kept the total allowed items number under five. When I arrived at the building, signs directed me to a side door for appraisals. When I went inside, there was no info where to go in this dark dank hallway. I asked someone in the showroom where the appraisal room was. Barely looking up, she barked at me to take the elevator to the 3^rd floor, via a scary antique, slow elevator with burned out button lights, groaning its way up. On the third floor, a voice emerging somewhere away from the front desk asked what I needed, and without getting up, asked what materials my items were made of. Aside from the bone china, I had other items made up of other materials. She told me to put them on the «windowsill» (no table?) and called in an appraiser who focused on some miniatures made of bone or ivory, said she couldn’t appraise the other items because that appraiser wasn’t available for that particularl material, i.e. the bone china. Since she was the only one of the «many available specialists» she offered her opinion. She did not examine the photographed cup markings very closely and pretty much gave a $ 50 value to the items she wasn’t an expert in. She told me to check out other lesser antique dealers, but when asked which ones, she told me she had no idea. What a waste of time. Don’t bother with this sour, disinterested group for an onsite very questionable appraisal. It was a free appraisal, so you get what you pay for.

Okay, this isn’t Christie’s in New York but let me tell you I’ve gotten a variety of treasure from Weschler’s over the years; 20 years and counting. I got it bad but when the getting is this good there’s no need to check into rehab. I’ve gotten the most stylist vintage clothes to mid-​century furniture, art, jewelry, etc. You’ve all heard the term «one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,» yes it is and my house is 90% furnished with treasures bought from Weschlers; and just yesterday I made good on some cool vintage gloves and purses (all keepers for me). Every Monday (with the exception of a holiday) you can walk in and around to view the merchandise; and Tuesday morning is the day of the auction — the bidding wars. There is a system to the bidding process so go to the 3^rd floor (business office) where the nice ladies can make it happen for you. Believe me you will not be disappointed.

You can sometimes find interesting stuff here. What you’ll usually always get is a sour attitude from the people who run and work this house though.

My family has been going here for years and has never had anything les than a positive experience. They bring in excellent collections of items – widely varying in product and style (antique and elegant modern luxury furniture, clothes, dish sets, art, jewelry, etc.). And 99% of the time, the final auction price is well below what the item would actually appraise for, often to the point of extreme bargains (think a serious Persian rug for a couple hundred dollars). It’s family-​owned, the staff is friendly and helpful, and it’s an honest business.

If I could leave 0 stars I would.
I’ve had several experiences with this auction house — none very good and the most recent terrible. Rude and unfriendly people to deal with — who seemingly know little about customer service or simply don’t care.
There are so many great auction houses out there — I would steer clear of this one. I certainly will.
