History

Established in 2006.

VIDA Fitness was started by David von Storch in order to provide a place for people to work on their body, mind and spirit to achieve a fuller and more balanced life.

Not content to open just another gym, von Storch set out to create a place that offers its members not only a place to work out stress with physical exercise, but physical spaces and programs that allow our members to pause, reflect, and rejuvenate.

Our first location opened in August 2007 to tremendous enthusiasm and great reception. We work hard to make VIDA an exceptional place and while we are reminded every day that we can do better, our commitment is to make VIDA a truly unique and special place.

Business Owner

David von Storch is the founder, president and principal owner of vida fitness and the aura spa. david made his mark by building successful businesses from the ground up, including the capitol city brewing company, bang salon, café 1612 and the dakota nightclub, montana café.

in 2006, david decided to pursue his passion for fitness and set out to develop vida, a high-end full-service fitness concept where a member can work on his/her body, mind and spirit to achieve a fuller and more balanced life.

while the founder and president, david is keenly aware that what makes vida special and how vida will succeed is by creating a team of professionals who embody the vida corporate culture of honesty, integrity and humility. vida would not be possible but for the efforts of its great team and the support of its many members.

YOGA class with Eric Schwartz may well be one of «the best yoga classes» I’ve experienced thus far. I travel a lot and have had my fair share of classes. This yogi by far has a unique way with setting the vibe, the mood is light-hearted, his music is zen and his methodical ability to lead you on a journey into your practice is invigorating and releasing at the same time. I am not a yoga pro but can appreciate the way he explains the pose with simple instruction, his voice helps to soothe the corporate frazzle right out of your body… no wonder why the class is packed. Get there early!

THEY KEEP CHARGING YOU AFTER YOU CANCEL
I thought i joined month to month but they simply never cancel and keep charging you and say an e-mail is coming for you to cancel but it never does.
Now on my 3^rd phone call to request cancellation, Be careful, I would recommend paying cash once a month when you get there.
Will keep this post active and updated until hopefully they call or e-mail me and do the right thing

I think I would pay $ 100 a month just to shower here a few times a week.
The classes are great and there are so many every day that no matter what your schedule is like, you can definitely find a class you are able to attend. I am honestly blown away by the number of classes and the variety therein which are offered on any given day. It makes it so convenient for someone like me (that desperately needs someone coaching them along) to squeeze a workout in.
The facility here is very compact and mostly underground, but they have everything I would ever look for in a gym (and then some). The locker rooms are super contemporary and provide everything you need to get ready except a brush and a razor. And let me tell you about those waterfall showers, oh my goodness. I could get used to that level of luxury, its amazing. I have now also been to the U Street and Verizon locations and this particular spot easily has the best locker room set up.
Also — as a pro tip, any single dudes looking for all the beautiful men of Dupont/Logan Circle, go no further. There is serious man candy all over this place. On the flip side, all the uncoordinated ladies like me can come in, workout like a hot mess and go unnoticed. Its a magical thing.

I have enjoyed my membership at VIDA for many years, but unfortunately, it’s time for me to move on. I have called twice to cancel and have been told that I will be called back. It’s been almost 2 weeks and I haven’t heard from anyone. Will I need to call my credit card company to have them stop accepting these monthly charges?

I am not a member of VIDA, but I have visited a few times with a friend who is a long time member. I’ve been considering a membership for a while now but haven’t been able to bite the bullet of the expensive monthly dues and high registration fee. However, I visited on Wednesday this week and had an amazing experience.
My friend and I were checked in by the Nina at the front desk who was friendly, hospitable, and awesome. We then took the Power Yoga class, followed by a few miles on the treadmills, a steam in the sauna, and a shower. I realized I had forgotten my headphones after yoga – which basically means my workout is done, because I absolutely hate running on treadmills sans music – so I went to the front desk, hoping that one of the amenities that the hefty fees gets you would be extra headphones. That was not the case. However, Nina surprised me by offering her own pair of headphones for my work out. It was incredibly kind and hospitable of her – most of my friends won’t lend out their headphones! I was blown away by her friendliness and hospitality – it definitely changed my perception of the gym. I had been thinking of it as a stuffy, overly expensive, elitist club instead of a neighborhood hangout with fun classes, friendly people and a solid community. I’m really excited to visit again.
Besides the staff, the facility is pretty great – a full class schedule (although can there please be more kick boxing classes?), lots of equipment for cardio or weights, and a sauna and steam room as well. I’m definitely interested in pursuing a membership after visiting this week.

Gym was great place to workout. Had a great vibe to it and good music even. They had just about all the equipment one could ask for but perhaps too many machines for the space or at least the need to reorganize a bit to accommodate. The locker rooms were nice and appreciated that had full service towels, soaps, etc and really liked the waterfall style shower experience.

I have been a Vida member for over 4 years and the gym keeps getting better. The classes are great and the staff wonderful. They really listen to their members feedback. Vida is expensive gym but much less than a dedicated yoga/doing/gross for studio and offers all those class types and more.

I’ve been a VIDA member for about 2 months now and I absolutely love it! The equipment is top of the line, the amenities are luxurious, and the staff is really friendly and helpful. As someone who doesn’t particularly love going to the gym, I find myself spending more time at VIDA than I anticipated. One thing that sets VIDA apart from other gyms is their personal training and group fitness classes. They make personal training very affordable and much less intimidating than it sounds. I’ve been working out with Emma for the past month and I’ve already noticed a difference in my body and fitness routine. She has been super helpful in teaching me how to exercise with awareness and good form. Needless to say, I leave every session sore, but satisfied with my hour of work!
VIDA also has a great range of group fitness classes that are both challenging and enjoyable. I usually do a class once or twice a week at around noon. Some classes fill up more than others, but I’ve never had any issues with space.
Lastly, I have to say, the gym is spotless. Even when it’s really full it doesn’t get that funky sweat smell. The locker rooms are stocked with everything I could possibly need, including hair ties, straighteners, curlers, mouthwash, body scrub, lotion, etc. Seriously, everything. It’s like being at a spa. The only drawback I can think of is that the lockers don’t have built in locks so you have to bring your own, but it’s really not a big issue (not even worth docking a star for).
I’m already trying to convince more of my friends to join :)

Wow this place is quickly becoming my second home. The amenities for a gym in this location are phenomenal. I will say that right off the starting block. I am an ex-athlete and have a love for working out. I was on a CorePower addiction when I lived in San Diego, literally going everyday. When I moved out to DC I switched to ClassPass but was not satisfied with either option. Insert my new love — VIDA Fitness. This location for me is perfect, 2 blocks from my house.
There are always a number of friendly and helpful staff around. You walk in and then go down to enter the gym — yes there is a lack of natural ligjt, but that is not something that bothers me. I tend to gravitate towards to Eliptical machines. Surprisingly, no matter what hour I go there is always a machine. Whether that is 5 pm or 6 am, there are certainly a ton of people in this place but they have an ample supply of machines to make me happy. The group classes are also great — this si something that I have found pushes me a little bit more than an individual work out. I frequent the yoga, barre, and cycling classes. My only complaint is that they do not have an App with the classes posted — to someone with an ever changing schedule I would love to pull out my iphone and check what classes I could make throughout the week.
Wifi on every level. I don’t use the weight machines but the bottom floor seems to be popular. a dry and wet sauna, and 2 infinity pools that are usually available. The bathroom is also full service — I honestly think I shower here more than I do at my own home. Shampoo, conditioner, Q-tips, hair dryers, straighteners, etc.
Salon upstairs — I actually got my hair cut here before I was a member! Love this gym and it is reasonably priced for someone that shovels out over $ 100 a month for group classes. Well worth the little bit pricier cost compared to the other gross gyms in the area,

For a variety of reasons, I very recently terminated my membership at VIDA Metropole. The termination process was extremely off-putting. After almost seven years of membership at this gym and after spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on personal training there, I was assessed a $ 25 cancellation fee. What?
I know for a fact that others who have terminated their membership have not been assessed a cancellation fee, or they have had it reduced. Double standard? It appears so.
To me, it underscores the vibe I pretty much felt from my early days as a member. And that is the owner, management and staff do not give a darn (I’d use stronger language, but I understand Unilocal doesn’t permit it) about the members.

I’ve been a member for a year now. I didn’t full appreciate VIDA Metropole until I started with my trainer Christine. Christine is a crazy combo of trainer/yoga teacher/spin instructor/marathon runner. Christine takes a holistic approach to training and is very encouraging. She is also extremely professional.
I also love Kashido kick-boxing with Frank. It’s by far the hardest cardio workout I have ever done. Frank has a following! People have tracked him from gym to gym over the years. He plays great music and keeps things fun all while making you do crazy cardio.
I am also a huge fan of spinning at Vida. Paul, Tamara and Christine have high energy classes.
My only suggestion — keep the music fresh. It helps keep me motivated during my workout.

Been a member at Vida Metropole for a year now and cannot say more great things about it. There are many machines but what I love is the variety of classes (cycling, bootcamp style, yoga, pilates, barre, kickboxing… etc).
The steam room, sauna, locker rooms and showers are very clean. The trainers are great too and the staff is friendly.
The only downfall may be the space for stretching, which is not that big.
Overall, it is a perfect gym & I always recommend it to friends!

Wow– people are tough gym critics these days! I think this VIDA location is excellent. Lots of amenities including: towels, great showers (I think the water pressure and temperature is quite pleasant) great soaps and lotions, hair driers in the bathroom, tvs on all cardio machines, lots of classes, endless pools, sauna and steam room. Some say the location is Blah but I think it is an excellent location, two blocks from my casa. The gym definitely takes advantage of every inch of space they have but I don’t feel it is cramped. I can go at 6pm and there are plenty of cardio machines to chose from. Overall I am a happy customer.

I’ve been going to Vida Metropole for a few years now. I’ve been working with Peter, one of the trainers there, for most of that time due to a crazy travel schedule and find that the trainers can really help me optimize the time when I am in town and help me to focus on undoing the effects of long meetings and rich food on the road.
The gym itself is below street level, so not much natural light, but for the most part this is not an issue. Could use more ventilation in some areas but nice mix of machines, cardio and free weight areas. Staff is knowledgeable and courteous and even when the gym is busy folks are generally willing to let you work in.
Despite the minor issues I am pleased with my experience with Vida and plan to continue working out there…

My wife and I are avid weight lifters and couldn’t commit to VIDA even though we lived a block away. We tried their free passes on a regular weekday evening. There were only two squat racks (non-smith machine types), and the general area for weight lifting wasn’t large enough for the huge crowds that come out. They do have many weight machines, but even they had lines for them. The anaerobic area was two floors below ground, and it didn’t seem they had strong enough ventilation to handle the peak time in the evening. Plus you don’t get much natural light. If you’re looking for more of a night club feel to your gym experience, VIDA might be for you. The price was also a turn-off to us as we found a gym better suited for weight training and a better price nearby.

I was a Vida member for about two years and recently canceled my membership because my new apartment has a gym.
This location is mediocre at best. I’ve worked out in the early mornings and a few times in the evenings. One of the biggest problems is that this gym is small and cramped. I always felt I needed a shoehorn to get around some of the equipment. If you come in the mornings, you might be able to use some equipment without having to wait, but it’s a hit or miss situation. If you come after work, be prepared to wait, even for cardio.
Also, unlike the U Street location, I’ve never felt the people at the front desk were nice. A lot of the time they ignored me when I arrived/left and on a rare occasion one of the staffers would offer a half-hearted «Hello» or «Goodbye.» The folks at the U Street location are 1000 times friendlier and more welcoming.
I always got emails from the lady who manages this location asking for my feedback and to fill out surveys. It became repetitive and it was obvious management wasn’t reading my comments because all of the replies contained basically the same canned response. «Oh, we’re working on it!» or «I’ll talk to the staff about their behavior!»
Just go to U Street instead.

Ah, six long years have passed since my last update on Vida and they’ve been generally happy years — although Vida’s moved past the «growing pains» stage into the «aging» phase. The last couple years, especially, have seen a real decrease in quality.
First, the good: good selection of weights and machines, some nice classes (really like Rx) with mostly great instructors. The staff are generally very friendly and helpful. And I love the space, which is so nice that you don’t even mind that you’re underground.
And the bad:
— maintenance — For example, half the men’s showers have terrible water pressure. This has been the case for months at least. Also, it’s common for the light bulbs to go out over the showers and not be replaced for. .. a week (while the maintenance staff walk right by). Showering in semi-darkness is the new thing, apparently.
— music — in this age of Pandora and Spotify it’s hard to imagine that I could hear exactly the same tracks every single day at Vida. But I do. C’mon guys: there must be a staff member who gives a little bit of a damn about music. Spring for a subscription and use Spotify.
— theft — do not leave anything (anything!) in the mens locker more than the amount of time it takes to shower or it will be stolen. I’ve had a shaving kit stolen, a pair of running shoes, and most recently a really beat-up old pair of hiking boots (during the recent snow) that I’d left for 45 minutes under a bench while I worked out. Gone, gone, gone, and management showed little or no interest (with the boots the manager, Scot, didn’t even bother to respond when I emailed him).
— antiquated video systems on treadmills and machines — no bluetooth, and the only connector they have is for the OLD iPhone. Sorry modern iPhone users: you’re out of luck. Sorry Android: no way. How about a Netflix or HBO subscription, guys? All those big screens on the machines and mostly I watch video on my iPhone 6 screen while working out.
— just not keeping up – A gym that wants to play at this level needs to step it up. Those of us who go to the gym to work out don’t want to hear about how the pool deck at U Street has been renovated AGAIN. How about renovating the mens’ locker room? How about built-in locks for the lockers?
