Spanish Tutor DC

I was looking for a program to help me resurrect what I learned in many years of high school Spanish class decades ago, and I’m so happy to have found the perfect place in Spanish Tutor DC.
The classes are small, the location at Farragut North is extremely convenient, and the cost is quite reasonable. But it’s the instructor and the fun and welcoming atmosphere she creates that have made the difference for me. I was at first intimidated as a beginner speaking entirely in Spanish during class, but this is truly a wonderful and effective way to learn and I was quickly put at ease by my teacher and classmates. I also appreciate that we’re learning through a mix of classroom discussion, reading, writing and video.
I just signed up for a second eight-​week series of classes. I look forward to my class every week!

I really enjoyed my Spanish Tutor DC class. It was a small class with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher (Harold). Everyone in the class had many chances per class to speak and practice the language with people at a similar comprehension level. Would take another 8-​week course if I weren’t moving out of the area!

I originally signed up for classes because the location and class schedule were convenient. Now I’m on my second eight-​week session and have nothing but positive feedback.
My teacher Claudia provides valuable instruction while still keeping the class light and fun. She is a very skilled teacher who helps us understand Spanish on a high level — often cluing us in to nuances and contextual clues that I had no idea about even after years of learning.
I have already recommended STDC to several friends and will continue to do so!

I’ve tried other Spanish programs in the DC area and felt pretty meh about all of them, but stumbled across Spanish Tutor DC and was so glad I did. Very reasonable rates and you absolutely get your money’s worth. Small classes, lots of one on one with the instructor. Claudia was my instructor and was very skilled at getting students talking and keeping the conversation going, which is a challenge in any language class. Easy to schedule and easy to get to the offices. Very much recommended. Would absolutely take another class there in the future.

I stumbled upon their website several years ago while looking for a teacher to help me with medical Spanish for my job. I took a set of eight group classes, then transitioned to private one-​on-​one classes.
These classes were superb. My teacher (Juan Luis) was fantastic, the best Spanish teacher I’ve ever had. Prices were very reasonable, communication with both Juan Luis and with Santiago (the owner) was always prompt and professional. What I appreciated most was that my teacher was UNBELIEVABLY FLEXIBLE with the schedule; my hospital job had a punishing and variable schedule that made it necessary to change the day and time of class every single week. This was handled beautifully by my teacher and by Spanish Tutor DC.
I assure you from experience that there is a vast difference between a teacher who knows how to teach Spanish (as Spanish Tutor DC demands of its teachers) versus someone who just knows how to speak Spanish. I always came to every class with a list of questions, and always came home with a list of answers. A bad teacher will simply tell you, «Because that’s how you say it» (very unsatisfying). My Spanish Tutor DC teachers actually knew how the language was structured.
I was so impressed that I took the classes continuously for three years. I just came back from a three month trip to Spain, where I put my new Spanish to the test. Spanish Tutor DC made all the difference.

Just an update that I’m still taking classes at Spanish Tutor DC and still enjoying them. Language learning is sometimes two steps forward and one step back, but my instructor’s patience (and seeing other students struggle with aspects of the language) is what keeps me going.

I took classes and private lessons with Spanish Tutor DC for over a year and learned a tremendous amount. I would, and do, recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning Spanish part-​time, either casually or seriously.
I initially chose STDC because of their flexibility, reputation, and price. Many other businesses/​schools only let you start at the beginning of a term/​course. STDC works on adaptable small-​group classes, so it’s possible to jump in and begin right away. Plus, there are multiple times and locations around the city so it’s easy to find something that fits your schedule. The price was one of the best and there is little commitment — you buy classes in 8-​week blocks.
Classes meet once a week for 1.5 hours (some may be for 1 or 2 hours, not sure) and are capped at 5 – 6 students. If you want a crash-​course immersion experience, with 3+ hours of classes a day, 5 days a week, then STDC is probably not for you because that’s not how it works. That being said, I have no doubt that Juan-​Luis — who runs STDC — would try to work something out. I wanted to learn faster than the 1x/​week frequency, so Juan-​Luis gave me the option of taking 1-​hour private lessons with the same instructor concurrently — and at a slight discount from the regular private lesson price.
My instructor was Eduardo, a native speaker from Madrid. He was a fantastic teacher, having a masters in teaching Spanish and prior experience teaching at a school in the US. Class is a no-​English zone. You practice speaking, listening, and reading Spanish. Outside of class, you have homework and that’s where you learn most of the grammar rules. This is efficient because it allows class to be a time to ask questions and practice using what you learned. Other assignments we had were watching Spanish television online, reading articles, and writing and sharing favorite recipes. Private lessons can be held anywhere. We did ours in cafes and conversed about pop culture, politics, current events, our plans and stories from the week. It doesn’t get much dealer than that!
The only reason I stopped is because I moved. Else, I’d still be taking lessons with Spanish Tutor DC.

A friend and I took private Spanish lessons together through Spanish Tutor DC for about a year and a half. We were both very pleased with the class, and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in improving their Spanish. Here’s why:
–The instructor, Eduardo, is a native speaker from Spain. He’s very friendly and makes the class fun and informal, while also conducive to learning.
–The class format allowed me to improve in all the main areas of language instruction: homework assignments are typically a mix of reading newspaper articles, writing about the article, and watching Spanish-​language TV or movies. In the class, we practice speaking Spanish by discussing the article/​TV show for the week, doing spoken grammar exercises, and having informal conversations.
–The fact that homework assignments were based on real Spanish newspaper articles and TV shows made them much more interesting than typical language exercises. The three of us had free-​flowing conversations about the subject matter, which we probably wouldn’t have had if the homework had been based on less interesting material.
I went from a very basic knowledge of Spanish to a solid intermediate understanding in about eighteen months. I think that anyone committed to learning Spanish would benefit greatly from lessons through Spanish Tutor DC.

I have been taking classes at Spanish Tutor DC since last spring and couldn’t be happier. My class ranges from 3 – 6 people (depending on the week) which is the perfect size for getting to know one another and keeping a conversation going in Spanish. Some of my classmates are taking the class for work but most of us just want to learn Spanish for our own sakes. I have learned more Spanish in the last 9 months than I learned in 5 years of Spanish classes in junior/​senior high school and plan to continue taking courses here indefinitely. Classes are purchased in groups of 8 — and if you can’t make a class at your designated time, you can just go to another class instead. Since they have classes at many different levels, you can hop in and start taking classes at any time rather than having to wait for a new session to start (which is why I chose Spanish Tutor DC in the first place). It’s all a very easy, hassle-​free and fun way to learn Spanish.
