Our Philosophy

All students are unique and their differences should be respected.

Ethos — We believe the scale for success varies for every child. We foster autonomy and a strong work ethic in our students. By developing a skill set that goes beyond short-​term goals, we build academic confidence that will be applicable to students’ future tasks, assignments, and, more importantly, their life experiences.

Culture — Every center is warm and designed to make students feel comfortable while learning. Our classrooms are equipped with a computer for each child and a library of more than 2,000 available books. SpiderSmart centers are safe spaces where any student, at any level, can grow into a confident learner.

History

Established in 1989.

With our first eight students and 800 square feet of space, we started the Reading & Writing Center in Annandale, Virginia, 1989. We set up a library of children’s books, and started creating comprehensive writing assignments for each title. Our core belief was that reading and writing is the foundation for all learning. Our students read books, wrote essays, and received detailed feedback every week.

Over the years, we’ve developed writing assignments for more than 2,000 books. As the company grew, we added other programs: math, test preparation, and our online component. To reflect our now diverse course offerings and locations, we have changed our name to SpiderSmart Learning Centers.

Now, thousands of students participate in our programs at local centers or online.

At SpiderSmart, students discover inspiration that sparks their education. Our teachers motivate students to become independent thinkers, problem solvers, and, above all, lifelong learners.
