Park at LeDroit

This is a good park, and I feel lucky to have it 5 minutes from my house. I mostly go for the dog park. My dog loves it! Wish more dogs would come though for longer periods! I usually stay for 10 – 15 minutes in the dog park but it’s really hit-​or-​miss. Sometimes there’s no one in sight and sometimes there’s a few dogs.

I’ve spent considerable time here this fall. Since its getting colder, it’s usually empty which is great seeing as i like being alone. I like it a lot. I can’t give a full review b/​c i haven’t quite experienced the full park in the middle of summer.

(I know this review is about the park, but let’s face it, you really want to hear about the park, the surrounding area and the overall environment). Ummmm, well, it’s renovated. I go to school in this area and come by periodically to visit a friend. I’m ALWAYS here in the day time because I don’t exactly trust the area (this sounds strange coming out of the mouth of a woman who grew up in Compton, I know). While the area is being gentrified (sigh), it’s still not walkable at night in my opinion. Daytime fun may lead to a run in with youngsters lurking around smoking pot (white, black, Hispanic or other), bums bumming around and such. Good this about this area is that it’s very walkable. Metro assessable, plenty of eateries and of course Howard University is right down the street.

This park just recently got a huge renovation! It is now exercise, kid, and fun friendly!
They have new exercise equipment that is really handy– it has the dip bars and step stools and all kinds of other things. It’s usually not crowded at all, though it is in a very open area, and so on a nice day it is the best place to work out. You can have your kids play on the recreational kids stuff they have.
Down the street from this place is a dormitory that belongs to Howard U, the up and coming neighborhood with (as a reviewer stated) rapidly changing demographics, and adjacent to it on two sides are housing complexes that host people of a variety of social and economic backgrounds. That said, I think its fair to say that the park services a variety of people. However, I have never had any bad experiences here, I have rarely seen questionable activity occurring, and more often than not, there are public servicemen around the neighborhood anyway.

Went here with my 2 year old today to try something new. New equipment but the three teenagers smoking pot and picking seeds out of the dime bag under the pavilion the entire time made me leave. Why cant these guys go find someones basement to do this. Middle of the afternoon and pot smoke is drifting into the where the kids play. Class act guys…
Trash on the playground and a guy pissing on some bushes made this that inner city experience one can expect on a Sunday afternoon. Cant imagine what happens here when the sun goes down.

Who are all you white people? Wait — um nevermind. I have only myself to blame. I lived here during a time when other white people who accidented upon the neighborhood would offer me a ride home assuming I too was lost… Ah, how the times change.
There’s a dog park, and a kid’s playground, and even adults exercising here. There are also aimless teenagers «hanging out.» I suspect they may also be engaging in business transactions but I learned a loooong time ago to just keep walking, don’t stare, and smile.

I recently went here after I saw the fitness course while driving by. I usually ride my bike 3 miles up to Rock Creek Park fitness course. This park has a similar set up and is a 2 minute walk from my house. Dip bars, Pullup bars, sit up stations, etc.

Love the dog park here! We feel so lucky to have one in the neighborhood since there really aren’t many in DC. It’s well-​maintained (all by volunteers!) and it’s a great place to meet your neighbors who also have dogs.

Not to be confused with the Park at 14^th, which is an entirely different sort of playground, the Park at LeDroit is one of the newer playgrounds in our fair city. At barely 6 months old, it sports new and shiny equipment, a soft rubber surface, and wide open spaces all around, so you can keep track of your kid even if he darts out the gate. There are two separate play areas, one for toddlers and another for older kids, and picnic tables where the adults can post up. If the little one gets bored, nearby are a community garden and a dog park that might entertain him/​her for a while. And did I mention the soft rubber surface? Ahhh, so clean and so fresh! Just wish there were some shade, although I think my son has enough melanin to survive some sun.. .
