Julian Safran, MD

I have only been to Dr Safran once but I was super impressed. He did the fastest pap ever and just his bed side manner is not like your average Dr. He has a great vibe about him, he put me at ease and was no BS, didn’t treat me like a number, and he interacts like a normal person. Such a great find. I also love their digital portal, where they put in all my health records and follow up instructions. It is rare to find a Dr so in tune with technology. Really impressed so far.

There is no better GYN than Dr. Safran! I have been going to him on and off since about 2004. Every time I move back into the area and see him, he remembers who I am and is always welcoming which is nice. He’s extremely knowledgeable and always makes me feel like he has my best interest at heart. When you visit the office, wait times are always standard yet short. I’m always in and out. Before and sometimes after each visit, he always takes me into his office to discuss my needs and to see if there is anything else that I have any more concerns about. He has even made himself available after hours by phone and email. During exams, he’s quick, gentle, warm and personable making the process, in my opinion, less uncomfortable. There’s no other doctor that I’d rather see. He is the first and only GYN that I’ve felt comfortable with. When I lived out of state — NY — I traveled down to get my annual check-​up done with him. Seriously, I would highly recommend Dr. Safran! He’s great at what he does.

Dr. Safran is still my OBGYN years later. I wish I had given him 5 stars in my 2011 review. He has helped me through issues and non-​issues especially since I am a bit of a hypochondriac. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a great doctor.

Dr. Safran is as good as everyone says he is. He’s extremely warm and personable. He gives a wealth of information and is very patient. Basically, all of the reviews that you’ve read about him are true. I tend to be a snob about facilities but the office was pretty nice. I had low expectations. Also, my wait time was very short. And finally, the nurses, receptionists and lab techs were also very nice! No complaints. Great office.

I’m hesitant to see doctors without any personal references, but upon reading his mostly positive Unilocal reviews, I felt Dr Safran would be the right choice. I moved to DC recently and have been trying for a while to find a local doctor for my lady parts. It’s hard to place all your trust in a stranger, even for just an annual exam. I was pleasantly surprised when the friendly nurse, who led me into the exam room, told me to wait before undressing. «Dr Safran talks to new patients before doing anything,» she said. And indeed that is what he did. We talked about all my concerns, what tests I wanted to do, and he was a great conversationalist who made me feel at ease. I never felt hurried or like I was in some Pap smear factory line. I was interested in preconception information, and he excitedly talked about all things prenatal, making me equally as excited to plan my family’s future here.
The wait was pretty standard, maybe 10 minutes in the waiting room, plus another 10 in the exam room. I got there 15 minutes early, as all patients should, so there are fewer chances of slowing everything down. The front desk assistants were helpful and happy to explain every form I signed. I would highly recommend Dr Safran to my friends.

I never write reviews, but in this case I have to. I am so impressed with Dr. Safran I’ve told my family and friends about him. He did exactly what the other positive reviews say. Sat down with me and discussed my history, current concerns and gave advice I never would have expected. He does give his email and answers promptly. I had an issue with insurance and he called them, worked some miracles and called me to confirm. He is truly an amazing Doctor who goes above and beyond for his patients.

Fantastic, always so kind and understanding. Dr. Safran really cares about the patient, not the money. He’s avoided unnecessary tests and costs for us. Also, great at communication, I’ve emailed with questions and he is awesome about emailing back. It really gave me peace of mind when I couldn’t get to the doctor. I’ve been a patient with him for many years, I really appreciate that he talks out options with me since I’ve asked about natural options (instead of chemical). Random bonus, he’s seen so many couples come through the door that he has some great marriage and life advice, if you ask!

I’ve never reviewed a doctor on Unilocal,but felt I had to after my great experience today with Dr.Safran. I was very worried/​anxious going in for my appointment and Dr Safran had me relaxed/​laughing in minutes. I needed tests done and rather than making me wait through the weekend (I went on a Friday and next available opening in the computer for tests was on Tuesday), he pulled a chair up outside of the technicians room and waited until they came out to get me in immediately. He was wonderful about explaining everything to me and even provided a research study on my concern. I HIGHLY recommend this man, I’ve never had such a positive experience with any doctor, gynecologist or not.

Great personality and willing to listen to patient needs. He is also all about efficiency and high tech. You can communicate with him via your personal patient account online.

I don’t normally review doctors, but I had such a wonderful experience that I felt like I should. The office itself (Capitol Women’s Care on K St), was not great. I waited over an hour, and the receptionists didn’t give reason or acknowledge even that I’d been waiting for so long. Because most people try to schedule doctors appointments during the work day, an hour or more delay can be extremely inconvenient.
That being said, I finally got in to see the doctor and Dr Safran was great. He had a med student shadowing him, and he politely asked if I would mind her joining part of my exams and asking me questions to test. I absolutely didn’t mind, but I felt no pressure to agree to allowing her to be present, either. Dr Safran was very conversational and asked me a lot of questions, taking time to understand my reasons for being there, medical history, etc. The office also has an online system to track prescriptions, communicate with the doctors, etc, which is pretty awesome.
I would highly recommend Dr Safran to any of my friends. A good gyno can be hard to come by, but Dr Safran made me feel completely comfortable and I have no doubts that I’ll be well taken care of. The crappy wait times are a small price to pay for a great dr.

Dr. Safran is a gem. He is extremely knowledgeable, kind, caring and he has a really great sense of humor to boot. He is also great with follow-​up and is easy to get ahold of — he even works weekends to return messages and phone calls. I just can’t say enough great things about him. I am also a fan of Capital Women’s Healthcare electronic patient portal — very easy and secure way to get access to info and records.

Dr. Safran is great. He takes time to discuss things with you, and wants to give you as much information as possible. He is also responsive via email. When I needed to have surgery, he recommended the best surgeon ever — Dr. Steren.
I really trust Dr. Safran and his professional advice.

Dr. Safran already has the best reviews in town but I just cannot help it. He is great.
He always tries to advise on lifestyle rather than rush into writing prescriptions (ex: drink more water and eat less sugar to avoid UTIs). While this may be a bummer for hypochondriacs, this is a needed nudge for me towards the healthy habits.
As many point out — the reception desk staff can be maddening, especially over the phone… that’s where communication via email comes in handy (I usually get a response during the same day)!
Dr. Safran is very personable, polite, and gets out if his way for his patients. He once even came to the office on the weekend to see me when I had a vaccination emergency.

I’m 27, have been going to Dr. Safran for several years now, and highly recommend him. He’s incredibly personable, funny, and makes me feel comfortable. He can give test results via email, which I appreciate. And, one time, when I didn’t quite understand my results, he explained them very clearly over the phone with no hassle. He always offers me a free month sample of my birth control if I’m approaching the end of my prescription, and proactively calls in my prescription to my pharmacy. All around a great doctor.

Went there for my pap test. I reached a little later than my scheduled time but still he took out time and came to talk to me before any examination was done. I am generally scared of gynecologists but Dr. Julian made me feel very relaxed. He was talking to me while collecting the sample so that I do not feel tensed because he already knew I was very nervous. The staff at capital women care is also very nice including the receptionists.

Ladies — AVOID!
I found Dr. Safran on Unilocal and scheduled an annual exam based on the positive reviews. Big mistake! There were several issues and I will not go back. He forgot to do a breast exam. He coded a routine screening dexa (my first) incorrectly, indicating I had osteoporosis, so my insurance denied 100%! This led to over 6 months of effort on my part to get it corrected so insurance would finally cover it as the routine test that it in fact was. He seemed annoyed that I hadn’t used the app he had recommended to get my PAP results. He was clearly irritated that I wanted his office to let me know the «old fashioned» way — by returning my calls. I had to call his office manager multiple times to get the result. His office emailed my PAP result to another patient — a serious HIPPA violation.
Finally, Dr. Safran never offered any apology. He called me and curtly suggested I get another doctor after I sent the email below. Seems this doctor has an ego — of course I’m going to find another doctor!
«This has been a time-​consuming issue for me to try to address. Added to the fact that your office sent my Pap results to another patient and I had to call several times to get it, you did not do a breast screening during my appointment. As you may imagine, I am not feeling very confident with the level of care I have received from your office.
I have made several phone calls over several months to try to resolve the billing issue, and I would appreciate it if you would have your staff ensure that the proper billing codes are added and the incorrect ones are deleted.»

Writing to update my very recent review because of recent events…
So when I had a positive pregnancy test, I went in to confirm my results with Dr. Safran, since my usual OB (Bajaj) was unavailable. He called me the next day (a Saturday, no less) to confirm my positive test results and remind me which appointments I needed to make going forward.
Fast forward a week, I called CWC after-​hours hotline because I had started bleeding and cramping. I was back at CWC first thing in the morning to get checked out, and it was confirmed that I had miscarried. Literally, while I was getting my sono performed, Dr. Safran was leaving a message on my voicemail because he had heard I had called in over the weekend and wanted to make sure I was okay and schedule the appropriate checkups. I tracked him down after I had completed my exams, and he was incredibly kind and reassuring after what had been a very trying couple of days. Dr. Safran is as good as it gets.

I’m not quite a fan of the office in general, but I do like Dr. Safran. True to other reviewers, he provided his email address in case I had questions. He came in a few minutes after I had had my weight and blood pressure taken and acknowledged that he reviewed my chart and told me I was healthy.
He took the time to listen to me and answer my questions albeit our conversation moved at a quick pace. I like that he was so friendly and knowledgeable. He told me about mercury levels in fish and how I should only eat fish twice a week and that I should see a neurologist for my migraines and provided me with a list of neurologists he recommended.
Dr. Safran also took interest in what I did and introduced me to a colleague of his in the office that also does similar work.
I had some blood work done, and the technicians were upset about something in the office. Of course, this had me alarmed as I sat in the chair with my sleeve rolled up waiting for blood to be taken. I told the male technician I usually take a butterfly needle and that I didn’t have any veins. He stuck me with a needle but didn’t get any blood from my left arm. He kind of twisted the needle around, and a couple of days later, I still hurt. I told the the female technician the same thing. She tried my right arm and got blood out. Woo.
I think I’ll be back but not until I have to be.

Giving his patients his email address is nice. And he responds with an email or a phone call about 75% of the time. And sure he’ll sit and talk for awhile, but don’t ask any challenging questions or anything — anything beyond a typical question with an easy answer will irritate him. And he doesn’t talk about what he’s going to do before he does it and he isn’t exactly gentle.
Front office staff are generally very nice and helpful. The wait isn’t ever too too bad — about 10 – 30 mins. The waiting room itself is a-​ok. The majority of the patient rooms are a-​ok. But there are a couple of rooms that literally look and feel like a closet. Dirty, dirty, dirty. And those are the rooms were most of the procedures /​non-​routine office visits happen! Seemed quite unsanitary.

Dr. Safran is the first new OB/​GYN I’ve had in several years. I moved to Northern Virgina last fall from out of state, and I wasn’t thrilled at the prospect of having to find a new one. I looked at his reviews on several websites and went for my annual with him today.
The front office staff was very friendly. They instructed me prior to my visit where to find the paperwork that would be required so I could have it prepared upon arrival. I was only in the waiting foom for about 10 minutes before being called to the back. The nurse that checked me into my room was very sweet and helpful, and stayed to chat for about 10 minutes about my medical history while taking blood pressure, etc.
Dr. Safran is extremely knowledgeable, kind and thoughtful. He seemed very interested in what I had to say and made the atmosphere comfortable. He is technically savvy unlike most doctors I’ve been to– he gives each patient his e-​mail address, and they have an app for appointments, test results, etc. He even e-​mailed me an interesting article he had read that day right there from his laptop.
I would recommend him 100%. I am really thrilled to have found such a good one.
