JR Cigar – Washington DC

Pros:
1) Large selection including all the big name brands and some smaller manufacturers.
2) About 10 seats and a reasonable amount of accessories.
3) A number of 5-​packs for grab and go shopping.
4) Very fair prices
Cons
1) Less than excellent ventilation. As a regular cigar smoker (read as «used to smoky spaces»), this shop made my eyes water after not too long.
2) No house lighters or matches in the lounge area. This is a small detail but an important one.
3) Unused room for seating. There are two high tops with hard seats and about 5 leather seats (one couch, two chairs with a coffee table)
All in all, not a bad shop by any means. With a few tweaks, they could definitely up their game. Other shops in the area are more enjoyable but this is still a fine shop to frequent, especially if you aren’t staying long.

Someone ruined a good cigar store. Have shopped here since it first opened. I’ve never left with less than 3 boxes of cigars.
Either it’s under new management, or things have changed at JR’s nationally, but what used to be a great store for serious cigar smokers has devolved into your average cigar store/​lounge/​men-​afraid-​of-​their-​families-​hangout. How sad.
They used to have a super inventory of full boxes of good brands of cigars. Now they have extremely limited inventory of full boxes. They seem more interested in selling single cigars to hobbyist, pretentious, occasional, people-​more-​interested-​in-​being-​seen-​smoking-​a-​cigar, cigar-​smoking pretenders. One employee actually had the nerve to give me a hard time for turning over a box of cigars to see what brand it was (box was on the shelf upside down.)
New management? My prediction: sadly, this once useful store will close before the end of 2016. Serious cigar enthusiasts should head elsewhere.

Is this a men’s world? I’m not a smoker and do not know anything about cigars. I walked into this shop to buy cigars to gift. I was ignored for a good 10 minutes. In turn, not one but up to three employees looks straight past me, like I’m invisible. Ultimately, before I was helped (reluctantly), I was told to «hold a minute» so that someone who wasn’t waiting and didn’t ask for help could be asked «anything I can help you with today, buddy?» So, is this shop a men’s world? I ended up buying somewhere where I had a first class experience.

Went here yesterday, for the first time. Awesome selection, great location, and great customer service. All vets (must show proof of service) receive a 10% discount. This, is my go to, cigar shop.

It looks very much like we have lost another one. Walked to the store last night and it was no more. Where did you go JR?

Excellent selection, plenty of Padrón & Oliva and the guys behind the counter are helpful and friendly. What more do you need?

As others have said, the prices are every bit as good as JR online. If you are into cigars, this is a must stop while in DC. When you walk in, the sweet aroma of the tobacco immediately greets you like a long lost friend. The guys behind the counter are helpful and friendly — like an old timey bartender in spaghetti westerns. They helped me find my cigars and then clued me into different specials they were having on my brand. I even picked up a few sticks to broaden my horizons. By the sight of ashtrays and cigar remnants, looks like smoking is OK in here. I, however, headed out to Shelly’s Back Room to enjoy my purchases with a wee bit of whiskey and a big, comfy chair.

Great customer service. And, I appreciate the 10% discount for current military and vets. They rarely carry Ashton VSG and some other premium cigars but have very competitive prices on what they have in stock. Great prices on accessories like torch lighters (they even have a very good 3-​jet torch for just $ 9) and cutters.
On latest visit discovered they won’t give the military discount on Padron cigars.

Great customer service — very friendly and helpful. They have a small selection of pipes around the $ 45-​$ 80 range and then a few beginner pipes for around $ 25-​ish. Good selection of tobacco. The store is mainly cigars, as the name implies. I’ll be back!

A knowledgeable staff and a classy place to hang out and enjoy a smoke! I live too far south to be there regularly but I make it a point to visit when I can! No this place doesn’t carry all the latest «boutique» brands but then again, after years of enjoying cigars I have gravitated back towards the more established brands. There are plenty of Arturo Fuentes to keep me happy. People who don’t like this place aren’t real expierenced cigar smokers…

Great prices and service for the District. The JR brands are ok though. I had the new JR ultimate 6×60 Maduro which is my favorite type. It was a little bitter. Good place for an inexpensive smoke.

JR’s knock-​offs of premium brand name cigars are a great way to save money on above average smokes. Best value you can find from a brick-​and-​mortar cigar retailer.

There is no doubt that J&R has the best prices that you will find in the metro DC area. The cigars are fresh, the selection is pretty extensive, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

Very helpful staff and kind of a cool warehouse feel, but really crappy selection. I would guess that about 80% of their stock is the General Cigar ripoff Cuban brands junk. «Montecristos», «Cohibas», that sort of thing. None of the good new independent American brands, and precious little of the Avo and Fuente ilk. They have the JR house brand, of course, but in my limited experience those all suck. They do carry Nat Shermans though.
Not a store for serious cigar smokers or for anyone who thinks Cuban ripoff brands are offensive. Given that Drapers is a ten-​minute walk away and has a selection that is a thousand times better, I don’t know why you wouldn’t just go there.

We walked in close to closing time but were greeted to come in anyway. Staff was very helpful in recommendations. Disappointed they didn’t carry Padron, but they made a fantastic recommendation for an alternate to a Padron 64 Anniversary. Great store, great staff. Will be coming back here.

Everything that they offer on line you get here — and you can probably save a few bucks on shipping.
A committed set of customers who all drop in of a lunch time for a quick nooner.
The only thing I did not like was that there are no chairs to sit in an enjoy your smoke. Come on guys — move some of that inventory into the back room and put a couple of leather chairs there for me !

Please: JR Cigars has the worst selection. I’ve only been smoking for a little while but they don’t carry any of my favorites. They don’t carry Padron, Rocky Patel, 5 Vegas, San Cristobal or Olivia. Half of their inventory is their brand of knock-​offs anyway.
The prices are cool and if they’ve got what you want, you can get it in a 5-​pack. Head over to Georgetown Tobacco for a much better selection and experience though.

JR’s doesn’t play games!
Prices and selection is every bit as good as what the JR website and catalog offers.
If you like cigars like I do, you’ll wander around here like a kid in a candy store.
If you don’t know anything about cigars, you should still take a look around. The sheer number of brands and offerings should still be something to behold even for just a few minutes.
I normally always support the little guys, but JR’s gets lots of love from this cigar smoker no matter their enormity.

Wow! What a gem.
First, a disclaimer. I’m by no means a tobacco enthusiast. Instead, I’m just a guy who wanted to smoke a cigar with some coworkers to celebrate the completion of a major project. (One coworker referred to JR’s as the Walmart of cigars.)
Anyway, despite being horridly out of place when requesting inexpensive cigars, the staff was courteous and professional. They showed us the selection of products in our price range, didn’t try to up-​sell us, and even cut and lit the cigars for us.
Kudos guys! I’ll circle back to this shop to get my annual Thanksgiving and Christmas cigars.
