History

Established in 1976.

Hyatt Regency Washington opened it’s doors and accepted its first overnight guests on Thursday, April 1, 1976. Coincidentally the same date that Apple was established. Designed by architect John Portman, the hotel was a new build, costing $ 42 million, and has remained a Hyatt Hotel ever since. Frederick Alexander was the hotel’s first general manager.

Located two blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the hotel encompasses an entire city block in northwest Washington, D.C. at New Jersey Avenue, D Street, First Street and E Streets, NW. The hotel initially opened with 900 guestrooms. Over time, they found a need for more meeting space so the hotel converted some guestrooms to meeting space. The hotel currently has 834 guestrooms including 32 suites and 32,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
