Hotel George, a Kimpton Hotel

My whole family was just terribly impressed with our recent stay at the George. From the wonderfully friendly and helpful staff to the large, clean and well-​appointed rooms, I would unequivocally recommend the hotel to any traveler. Keep up the fantastic work, Hotel George!

Had a great stay! Everyone in the hotel was very friendly and helpful.
The room:
It was a decent size, with a nice and comfortable bed. There was also a chair and a desk, both were comfortable to use. Big tv as well. Many snacks and drinks available as well! The bathroom was the only downside to the room. A lot of the accent pieces that hold the soaps and toiletries were chipped and scratched. Also, the shower door leaked. Other than that, it was great. Loved the soaps and shampoos provided!
The hotel:
It was very clean and all of the staff were very helpful and courteous. The wine and hot chocolate hour is a plus. The only problem I have are the elevators. When I checked in, one was out of service, which isn’t a big deal. But, a few days later, the door wouldn’t close when I got on, so I resorted to having to take the stairs on a few occasions.

I had read several posts where people bragged about this place and I felt great about my decision staying here on a weekend getaway with my wife.
I was somewhat wrong.
We were put in a handicap accessible room. Now normally I would be okay with this. However, now I know what it feels like to be SHAQ when he visits a hotel. The room while nice was probably the smallest room in the hotel.
My shower experiences were dramatic and I’m not sure if I’m actually clean because a 40 year old man can only squat so much to wash his hair. Did I mention I never had hot water.
Hotel George gets a 3 star because this place is nice. I might stay here again if I don’t have to stay in handicap room.
Free wine between 5 – 6 is a bonus and probably is covered by the hotel daily fee.

My what big rooms you have!
I really liked Hotel George. The décor is a little quirky, but well done. And yes, it took me a little while to understand the play on «George» was them paying tribute to George Washington. I mean — it’s even down to the throw pillows on the bed!
Anyway, great hotel and great sized rooms for a big city.

I have to say, I was quite surprised when I read some of the other reviewers posts, but then I read other reviews by them and saw how one sided they clearly are! I will tell you, I am very picky and can get awkward when visiting hotels just because of horror stories I’ve heard. This was absolutely not the case when my husband and I visited the Hotel George. I’ve never been to Washington before, and we were coming for a special occasion and to check out the Crime & Punishment Museum before they closed their doors for good. I picked this hotel for the fact that it was dedicated to George Washington and it looked so cute with all the details dedicated to him and from previous reviews. From the moment we pulled up to the hotel to the moment we checked out, I felt important and well taken care of by the entire staff. Valet grabbed our luggage right away and took us to the front desk for check in, where we were greeted with a huge welcome by Jazmyn. She let us know all the hot spots and how to get all the museums by foot. We headed up to our room and found out that we were upgraded to an even better room and we couldn’t believe it! I’ve never stayed in such an amazing room before and there were so many meticulous details throughout the room that I spent the next hour walking around giddy over my excitement! I was so disappointed that we were only staying for the night and not longer. Dinner was amazing next door and our server Steve made it even better when he sang, Good Ship Lollipop to me while serving me a Shirley Temple! The food was incredible and the best I’ve ever had anywhere. The service was top notch during dinnertime, but lagged at breakfast time.
Pros:
— They give you $ 10 to raid the mini bar, and it’s fill with TONS of goodies, not just liquor
— The bathrooms are amazing and have big bottles of shampoo/​conditioner/​soap instead of tiny bottles that run out in two seconds
— Tons of towels & wash clothes so you don’t have to ask for more (I shower alot! haha)
— The bedding is seriously the most comfortable you’ll ever sleep on
— Tons of sink space for all you the crap us ladies lug around with us
— The staff is incredibly kind and helpful
— Free wifi with the rewards program
— The restaurant next door has the best food
— The hotel is within walking distance of literally everything
— They have complimentary everything, seriously anything you need they have and will get for you
— Yoga mats in the closets
— Free bike to use to go biking around DC
— Super clean
— Free wine hour and if you miss it, just go to the front desk!
— Free cable with movie channels
— Great desk area with comfy chair
— A/​C was incredibly cold, which was awesome in the Washington summer heat
— Super quiet, you couldn’t hear anything in the hallways or outside the windows
— Funky print robes in the closet, just gotta find your size
Cons:
— Ice machine is on another floor
— Elevators are small (if that matters to you)
— You eventually have to leave

Great location: walking distance to The Capitol. The rooms were small but the décor was clean and modern. The hotel staff was friendly and professional.

I went with my husband on a business trip for a few days, and this is where we stayed. The room was adequate, but (and this is a HUGE but) the bed had to have fleas. The reason I believe it was fleas instead of bedbugs is because they allow dogs in the hotel.
We reported the bites, and they said they had the room checked while we were out. I never saw any verification of this, or that it was free from fleas.
The next day I was covered with at least 10 – 15 more bites. There was NO offer of compensation besides the offer of a tube of antihistamine cream.
I know for a fact they let people have dogs there. I saw a woman walking out with a big dog as we were checking out. The lady at the desk confirmed they allow them.

My first stay and here’s what I’m already loving about The George, the best place I’ve ever stayed at a per diem rate:
1. Hotel bar encourages you to take a drink with you to your room. (Only 3 drafts, but 3 good choices.)
2. Enormous marble & granite bathroom has a shower AND a tub. Soap & shampoo on tap in the shower, no wasting little plastic bottles, nice. Even free cotton swabs.
3. Way cool large room, comfortable bed, USB power points at the desk, a huge TV with ESPN in hi def, and (seriously now) a thermostat so I can set my preferred temp instead of just something random like «lo».
4. Free wifi, just sign up for their rewards club. Corp VPN worked! Didn’t try to stream anything tho lol.
5. $ 10 raid-​the-​mini-​bar credit, nobody ever does that! To be sure I’m not all that eager for a can of Heineken after a fine draft (see #1) but maybe some potato chips?
6. Daily reception 5−6pm offers a free glass of Merlot or Sauvignon Blanc. Perfectly drinkable, if a bit early.
7. Pet friendly with no fees and no deposit! Ok the odds of my little pooch coming along to DC are slight at best but it’s good to know anyhow.
8. Separate recycling and trash cans beneath the desk, maybe it’s minor but I like it.
9. In-​room yoga mat. I’d probably hurt myself getting into downward dog, but it’s another nice touch I’ve not seen elsewhere.
Only minor complaints: the desk is way too high so typing on it is a disaster, no nightlight in the cavernous bathroom, and zero room left over in the little fridge mini-​bar.

Perfectly fine hotel but nothing special.
Pros:
— nice rooms with adequate space
— courteous hotel staff
— good location near Union Station
Cons:
— wifi was quite slow. faster than an airplane but not by much.
— a/​c worked okay but not great
— hotel restaurant is not good

Excellent boutique hotel in DC. Near everything. Service was excellent, from the restaurant sending post closing time room service to the concierge making excellent suggestions, to the front door staff who got me a limo and retrieved my laptop bag when I accidentally left it at the desk. My only minor complaint was that you need more drawer space for two people. Otherwise fantastic. Definitely stay there again.

I mostly enjoyed my stay, with the exception of one major flaw. The hotel staff is quite friendly and helpful and the rooms are nice. All this said my major gripe with the place is the internet is atrocious. It refused to work even with the help of their internet customer service the first day, and the second day (after someone came to fix it) it worked, but the signal dropped many times. It wasn’t working at all our third day and just ended up being a major hassle. I can not recommend this place for anyone looking for a place to be productive on the internet, however if this doesn’t apply to you it is a great place to stay.

Checked in last night for 3 night stay. The staff is incredibly courteous and calming, just what’s needed to start off a getaway for this Type A personality. They even noted my «room with natural light» request which was surprising as most places ask questions but pay no attention.
We were spoiled with our view at the Mandarin Oriental last October, but we are pleased with our accommodations at the George although there is no view. Free wifi & $ 10 MiniBar credit with KimptonKarma rewards, free to join.
After experiencing crowds for the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, etc., it was wonderful to come back to the hotel and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine from The George’s wonderfully warm and kind young man staffer who checked us in Last night. Where did they get these exemplary employees? We needed maintenance as we could not get into the minibar and maintenance literally arrived within minutes and he was also extremely courteous and quickly took care of it.
While we are very happy with our accommodations, we highly recommend The George based on their employees!

Very cool hotel but could use more attention paid to room cleaning, I had a pillow that had a pink stain on it and there was a brown makeup stain on the bathroom wall when I arrived.

We stayed at the Hotel George for several days during New Year’s and did not have one complaint! The hotel is in an excellent location. Right down the street from Union Station, and minutes away from Capitol Hill. They offer free wi-​fi and a free wine hour from 5 – 6 pm and the staff is excellent. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely be staying here on our next visit to D.C.

Great overall hotel. Realistically I’ve never been disappointed by a kimpton and this will continue that pattern. Like always the rooms are clean, the staff is extremely helpful, the décor is unique, and the happy hour is never bad. My boyfriend and I came during the holiday season and upon checking in we had the option of wine or a hot toddy. We checked in near the end of the happy hour so they took our bags and handed us a drink immediately so that we could take it up to our room and get settled in.
The location is great for people working out on the hill or if you’re looking for a hotel in extremely close distance to Union Station. However if you’re looking to visit DC and see the social scene, restaurants, and quick access to the National Mall, this location can be a bit of a hike.
Also, in terms of restaurants, I recommend going to Chinatown/​Downtown DC. The one here is good, but a little pricey for the quality and selection of food.

Absolutely LOVED The George Hotel!
We came for a three day weekend for my wife’s birthday, and upon arrival we enjoyed FREE wine during wine hour (5−6pm) and was given a complementary bottle to take to our room to enjoy later. We were even given a toy car for our son to have and play with. The room is simply beautiful with very detailed décor that honors the first president of the US very well, while also being pretty romantic and delicate all at the same time. Front desk staff makes you feel welcomed and treats you as family. Thanks Katherine and Blair!
Union station is nearby which makes it very easy to travel to the White House and other attractions such as the Zoo. You could walk to the capital building and museums if you want being that they are only blocks away.
All in all this place is a gem. We will DEFINITELY be back here in the near future! It’s a MUST stay!

Stayed here for a weekend and thought it was lovely! The room, albeit small, was really cute (the colonial pillows are adorable!) and had everything you’d need including a mini-​bar.
The front desk (shoutout to Candace who is absolutely AWESOME!) was always extremely helpful and super nice. The location is super close to many touristy places (Capitol Hill etc) but the neighborhood is pretty boring and definitely lacks restaurants etc
Speaking of restaurants, Bistro Bis — downstairs– is owned by the hotel and they definitely make decent food.

When visiting the capital city of this great country it only seems right that we stay in a hotel that uniquely honors to the first president of the United States. That hotel is ‘The George.’
I’m not kidding you when I say that it honors George Washington. The whole hotel has a George theme… his face is all over the hotel — but not in tacky way. Each piece of art I saw had a different way of giving tribute to the Pres, which I thought was really cool and creative.
Besides all the George artwork — the hotel is just beautiful. The lobby is clean and bright with comfy chairs for lounging. The hallway walls leading to the guest rooms are painted a striking blue and contrast with the striped black/​white/​blue carpet brilliantly. Our room, however, was totally tranquil with just a few pops of blue. Creamy walls, bold yet monochromatic wallpaper, white bed linens. The bathroom continued the theme with its white marble floors and dark wood counter top.
The staff at the George is fantastic. Everyone we encountered was really really nice. Blair, Greta and Devlin (I really hope I got all their names correct!) were especially great.
And maybe we just picked a good weekend — but we found the hotel to be totally quiet which was nice. The street had little weekend traffic, and thanks to some good acoustics we didn’t hear our neighbors in the next room or anyone in the hallway.
My only complaint for George was for the AC/​heating in the room. The thermostat is easy enough to work… but if we kept it lower than 70 it ended up being freezing in the room (the bed was located directly across from the vent.) If we raised it to even 71 — the heat came on. Weird and a little frustrating. But not enough to ruin our stay here, I would absolutely stay again.
A few other notes:
It’s true — there is a Keurig machine in the room with both coffee and tea k-​cups.
If you sign up for the Kimpton rewards program you get free WiFi throughout the hotel and a $ 10 Mini Bar credit which we used to score a couple Honest Tea’s for the ride home.
Parking on site is valet only and will cost you (after taxes) about $ 53 a night. We parked in the garage across the street (opens at 5:45am and closes at midnight). For two nights it cost us $ 33 total, which is much better than the $ 106 it would have cost us at George. Parking garage staff had no problem letting us park once they confirmed we were guests at the hotel and simply told us «just don’t park in a reserved spot.» No problemo.

This is a clean and modern hotel w decent amenities. Check in is easy & reception is friendly & helpful. They gave us all the key info — wine hour, wifi pw, gym avail, etc. if u forget stuff they got it!
Had the unfortunate exp where there were funky odors in hallway & let the reception know. They addressed — was happy that they were responsive & helpful.
The staff that makes up the rooms r very respectful & take great care in what they do.

My friends and I have stayed here many times, and we really love it! Reasons:
Rooms: Spacious, impeccably clean, well-​designed (not too tacky with a zillion different patterns!), generally very comfortable. HUGE bathrooms! Minibars. Ooooh the minibars.
Proximity: very close to Union Station, SCOTUS, Capitol
Happy hour! They have a FREE wine hour every day!
Service: Great. They’ve been very helpful, bringing up items that I’d forgotten, and supplying me with painkillers when I had a headache at 3am.
Food: The restaurant is delicious, though quite pricey, and room service is prompt and also delicious
Amenities: Free wifi. The gym is free and exists, but is bare bones. It’s in the basement with no windows/​ventilation and no TVs or anything. But, I/​we should really go run on the mall anyway, since it’s right there!
