H&R Block

Please do NOT use this office for any reason. I used to see a wonderful man there who has since passed on. When I called to make an appointment I was told that I could see the woman who was taking over most of his cases.
I showed up on time but didn’t know the name of the person that I was seeing. When I arrived I asked who my appointment was with and was told «That’s me but I’m with someone.» when I asked what I should do or if I should come back I was told that I could see someone else. I thanked her and sat down. After 20 minutes of sitting there totally ignored while 2 preparers sat in a cubicle complaining about how busy they were, I got up and left. No follow up. no call. no email as far as they know Im still sitting in the waiting room with their other suckers.
H&R Block can give out all the FREE MONEY that they want but what people really want is competent service. No chance of that there!!!

I just had the worst tax experience of my life. My tax person, Melinda Purce, YELLED at me and made me cry. WHAT TYPE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THIS H&R BLOCK??? It’s pretty sad when you make a grown woman cry. First, the lady that did my taxes clearly didn’t know what she was doing. She got up 10+ times to go speak to someone else to figure out how to do my taxes. She consulted a tax book twice. I had my appointment at 8 PM. At 9:30 she hit a «glitch» and called a person over to help her. At 9:50, still dealing with the «glitch, she tells me I have to come back tomorrow and fill the rest out. I tell her that I don’t get why I have to come back when I’ve been here for two hours already. She actually YELLS at me, voice raised, for saying this and yells that there’s a glitch with the system and I shouldn’t have an attitude about this. I have never been yelled at by someone like that before. What happened to customer service??? This was the rudest service I’ve ever had. If it hadn’t been April 13^th, I would’ve walked out of that place right then and there. I feel sick with myself for even paying for that service because of how terrible it was and almost wish I’d just paid the late filing fee. And the «glitch» that took her an hour to fix, was that she hadn’t put my home phone number on the FIRST page of the tax return. There was no glitch. She is just incompetent and doesn’t know how to use the software and fill in the proper fields. I had to sit there for another half hour while she kept trying to «apologize» (which was the crappiest apology I’ve ever received, but she clearly knew she was in the wrong). I asked her to just stop and stick to the business we had to continue with, but she kept pushing at it and bringing it back up all the way to the end where I ran out crying. I will never use H&R Block ever again for my tax needs. I can’t believe this is how you treat your customers.
Also, it cost $ 277 to file my taxes here. That is insane for the incompetent and rude service I received. Never again.

If I could give a place zero stars I would. We waited over 50 minutes before we were finally seen. Someone who came in without an appointment was seen before us. They were completely unprofessional and disorganized. We should have downloaded turbo tax and figured it out ourselves.

Wow. We made an appt at the 1701 K St NW location to get taxes done.
We show up on time. Husband asks for key to use restroom and person at desk offers him the key and ventures a sarcastic «You’re welcome» before he has a chance to say thank you.
Tax preparer comes out late and after we say we are here because our last preparer charged us too much, starts teasing for a number on how much we paid last year and ventures that he is very expensive. This immediately makes me nervous that if we tell him how much we paid last year he will charge us $ 50 less. He asks me 3 times how much we paid last year and I keep asking him instead how much he will charge. He says well over many hundreds of dollars without asking about how simple our tax situation is. He adds that HR Block is very expensive. He then says he will be back in a couple of minutes to start work. Ten minutes later he is not back.
We leave and find another tax preparer. An intro conversation that is all about how much we will be charged is not confidence inspiring. And the just disapppearing, that is weird. We found a normal and competent CPA using online reviews, and only after the fact checked out this place’s online reviews. Wish we had checked Unilocal first.

This place is a disaster. We had out tax returns done here the year we married and bought a condo and both switched jobs, thinking we would need some professional help.
After one cancelled appointment, we showed up at the scheduled time to learn that they had never actually rescheduled our appointment. So the «manager» took our taxes. He said that he wanted some more information and could not fill out our taxes that night (though we were not asking for prior year review). I dropped off the additional information and he told me to come back the next evening at a specific time and he would have us sign the completed returns.
We came back the next night at the appointed time, and he had not started our return. We spend the next hour and a half walking him through preparing our taxes on a system that was no more sophisticated than turbo tax. WE actually ended up reminding HIM about a few deductions we needed to take. At the end of the day, we had spent $ 700 and considered it a waste of money and a lesson for us both.
Fast forward to this year, when I get a letter from the IRS saying they are questioning my return because HR Block had sent in the mortgage deduction statement for my spouse’s return, but not mine. Luckily I resolved this issue on my own as I had no confidence they would or could properly resolve it in my favor.
Every year, they call to ask to do our taxes, and every year I tell them it will be a cold day in hell before I ever let them near our taxes again.

Avoid this place at all costs. My husband and I filed with them and were shocked when the «accountant» told us we owed over $ 6000!!! She was unable to explain the dramatic increase over the year before, considering we made the same amount and claimed the same number of allowances. Luckily, we decided to get a second opinion and ended up getting about $ 200 back this year. Crazy? I think so. Criminal? Probably.

well, if we would have taken care of our taxes before the very last day they were due, maybe we wouldn’t have gotten stuck in this stuffy ass basement. again…i think the ventilation system defies some sort of building code. it’s hard to breathe and when you have to wait over an hour with a sleep deprived tot – well, that’s a challenge.
(parental side note: a good tot’s game requires 10 of their coffee cups and domination of the waiting area to the right of the entrance as you stack ‘em up and knock ‘em down.)
we came here last year, owing to their fairly flexible hours and location. i feel like, in both instances, although we waited a ridiculously long time, our taxes got done and we weren’t overcharged for anything. being as though we were in the system and our filing scenario was a fairly simple one, we paid about $ 200 for filing this time around, so i’m pretty sure we didn’t get ripped off (i kept double checking on that as we went along to the best of my ability).
because of the awful basement situation, and the fact that i saw other people waiting as long as two hours, being called to the desk, only to hear that they’ll have to wait — four times consecutively – i feel that this rating is fair and, aside from my waiting time (which was not as long as some others), i was pretty lucky. i found one of those aforementioned more unfortunate customers smoking away her frustration outside of the office, leaving her husband deal with their crazy tax person, who she insisted was a total nut job and seemed as if she was about to quit in the middle of their filing process.
aside from those things, my husband insists that our tax person’s knowledge was subpar. but our situation was simple and actually took all of 20 minutes (but we waited 1.5 hours).
go here if you’re desperate (read: a total procrastinator) and expect to wait as long as two hours… schedule accordingly.

This place was SO HORRIBLE I was compelled to leave a review.
Scheduled an appointment, and although my entire time there lasted just over half an hour it was by far one of the RUDEST experiences I have ever encountered.
I came prepared with my documents, seeking to get a consultation for my basic federal taxes (which H&R has been advertising immensely as free) to see whether or not I should expect to get some sort of return before I decided if I should let them do my taxes. I was talked down on, sighed at, and immediately felt uncomfortable in their dingy basement «office» of cheap carpet, a few cramped cubicles, and a water cooler. I was left alone in the cube for most of the time I was there as the person I was meeting with kept asking me a question, giving me a sarcastic and disrespectful response, and then getting up to allegedly ask someone something 3 different times (each of which she’d return about 5 minutes later for about 10 seconds until she left again). It was clear from the first second I got there that they had NO interest in helping and were strictly in it to get as much money out of you as possible as quickly as possible. I was told that they couldn’t help me with my incredibly and uncomplicated return and she refused to answer any questions whatsoever. I can’t emphasize RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE more than that. I would’ve talked to a manager but I really don’t think that would have gotten me anywhere in that joke of a business. NEVER again will I go to an H&R Block or recommend any of their services or branches to others — it’s been several hours since that appointment and I’m still feeling offended.

I had one of the worst customer service experiences of my life today.
I made an appointment yesterday for 10AM this morning. They tell me I have to bring copies of my 2008 and 2009 returns. I tell them that I don’t have questions about former filings, but rather I am newly an independent contractor and I need to know what I need to file and when. They tell me I need to bring copies of my 2008 and 2009 returns. «You sure?» I say. They’re sure.
I show up at 10AM. This place looks like it’s about to to have all of its furniture liquidated. It’s completely empty. There are cubicles everywhere, and nobody in them. On one of the desks there is a coffee filter filled with mini chocolate donuts. It was inexplicable. This whole place was inexplicable. Why is it even open? There’s not even a receptionist. I sit down in the lobby and it’s not until 10:30 that someone notices me. It’s a really obnoxious, brusk woman with extravagant nail polish who had no interest in my particular problem.
«What’re you here for?» she say. «I have an appointment,» I say. «What for?» she says. She looks at the documents I had placed in the chair next to me. «Well, I’m an indepen…» She turns and walks out of the room.
The woman comes back and tells another woman that I need my 2008 returns (the documents on the chair) reviewed. I say, «No, I need advice on filing taxes as an independent contractor.» «Whatever,» the woman says. I’m serious.
The woman who helps me was very nice, but not particularly knowledgeable. She just showed me some websites where I could download the forms I’d need. You know, the DC Office of Tax and Revenue site and

They charged me $ 75 for this. They told me that it was tax deductible.
I’m never, ever going back to H&R Block, and I’m going to make it a pet project of mine to dissuade people from using them.

Wow. Consider this a placeholder until next year when they’re working on taxes.
But considering just how things were on the phone and reading Unilocal reviews about other locations, I think I might stick with e-​filing or a non-​franchised tax service.
You know those stereotypical disgruntled, surly, people who want everyone to know they’re smart and you’re dumb and they deserve a better job? I think I just talked ot one of those people! LOL. Wouldn’t want a person like that doing my taxes. When it comes to legal matters and my money and making sure all my questions are answered and forms are filled out thoroughly? No, that doesn’t put me at ease AT ALL.
It makes sense that another reviewer said H&R block uses a small army of part-​timers.
I was put on hold 4 times, forgotten, and given the wrong information about hours of operation.
The second person I spoke with was more helpful and less hostile, so I’ll give another star for now.
