District Relocators

I don’t write positive reviews very often, but I felt compelled to after the experience that I had with District Relocators. I have moved several times over the past ten years, and I have a pretty good idea of what to expect on cost and service. In both of these areas District Relocators far surpassed my expectations.
The movers arrived on time, were very polite and worked incredibly efficiently. I do believe that I had done a fairly comprehensive job of packing my things up, but from there, the movers did an outstanding job.
This was a long distance move (DC to Manhattan), and the movers had no trouble arriving the next day in NYC on time; moreover they navigated to the tricky parking and loading around my buildiing.
Add to this that they were priced very fairly and you have an excellent moving experience.

Arrived on time. Five guys, moved in and out of a tricky two bedroom apartment and storage unit in an hour. Moved into the house just as quick. Wrapped all furniture. Put in rooms when asked and did a great job. Will definitely use again. Also had to reschedule on short notice and was more than understanding. Jay, Shawn, Chris, Julian and Derrick were great the entire time. Much appreciated.

If you are looking for the cheapest, but still worthy, moving company check them out. Best priced movers we found and all our stuff got moved in under 3 hours with no damage and little headache. Sure there are probably better movers out there with access to a dump and other services, but if you want a straight forward move, choose these guys.

I moved 4.5 months ago and purchased additional insurance. In the move, two items broke: an art piece (bowl) and a bookshelf. 4.5 months later, I’m still waiting on my insurance claim. I’ve emailed the claims email 11 times and provided all of the information they need to pay out my claim. Jason (claims) has written me back occasionally, but he has not finalized the payment. The only phone number available is for the sales team; they know nothing about claims and despite leaving multiple messages with them asking Jason or the owner to call me, I haven’t heard from anyone.
I’m in the process of having my lawyer contact them. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Update: A few days after writing this review, the company refunded the amount they had incorrectly charged me. Based on that I am updating my review. Read below:
1) the move itself: 5 stars (if it were possible to give 6 stars for this component alone, i would)
— day of the move — absolutely flawless. 2 of the 4 guys arrived early. they started taking stuff out of the house to the curb so that when the truck arrived they could load that much quicker. but since the truck wasn’t there, they didn’t start the clock. they loaded up two different apartments into one truck and then unloaded us into the new apartment in about 2 to 2.5 hours. the crew was super friendly, super efficient, and reasonably careful with our stuff. no damage to the walls, and no major damage to any possessions. the only issue was at the end when they tried to erroneously charge us for stairs, which is really more of a customer service issue (see below).
2) Customer Service: 1 – 2 stars
— booking was relatively straightforward — fill out an online form, speak to a lady named Linda, get an estimate, sign a contract, and then wait for your guys to arrive.
— they obviously don’t do a good job of communicating to their moving staff because those guys tried to assess a stair fee when it clearly wasn’t warranted under the terms of our contract
— 8 weeks of trying to get a refund was insufficient to get anybody to make this happen. only by posting a 1 star review here was I able to get someone from the company to do the right thing and refund the excess charge (the letter and check are dated 4 days after this review). it doesn’t seem like they have a great system or processes for customer service, and only take action when their rep is threatened.

Original: At the end of the day, the most important quality in any business is honesty, and this business is simply dishonest.
When I got my quote, it said in black and white that charges for stairs would only be assessed if there «two flights of stairs or more at the same location.» Despite the fact that no location had more than one flight of stairs, our moving crew charged us $ 60 in stair fees when we got to the unload point (one flight for each the two locations where we were moving out of and one for the apartment we were moving into). I argued with them for a long time, but ultimately felt the need to pay them, and told them we would dispute this with their management.
I called management, who acknowledged that I did not owe the stair fees, repeatedly said they would honor the terms of the original, written quote, and continually promised to send a check. It is 11 weeks later, and I have not received a refund.
If they cannot be trusted to do something as simple as honor their own black and white, written charge sheet, they cannot really be trusted to honor anything. Do not use this dishonest company.

Timeliness: 2 hours late in picking up my stuff. When I contracted them, i asked for a COI because i was not allowed to move into my new building without the insurance document. They got the document to me after 3 days and 30 minutes before my move. My building freaked out. The company also stopped answering my emails and phone calls during this time and would not give me information regarding the letter of insurance.
Communication: the company all uses the exact same email address so emails get missed or ignored all the time. They also dont always answer your calls.
Moving: most of my items were scratched, bent, and one was broken into pieces. This company only covers items with blankets and doesnt utilize bubble wrap at all. Many of my boxes were also flipped upside down when the boxes were clearly marked. I filed a claim about one of my items and they never responded. The movers are nice, but doesnt seem like most have much experience in moving.
They are over priced in comparison to other companies and considering their low quality movers they should not be charging as much as they do.

I’m very happy that I went with District Relocators for my move the movers were professional, personable and great to work with. The company was really flexible when things with my new complex became complicated. Bottom line, if you’re moving, I highly recommend them.

We had a move with District Relocaters on Aug 30^th and it was great. We had 2 pickup locations, one apartment and one single family home. Derrick, Al, Shemar, Donovan and Malcolm did an excellent job. They called in the morning to confirm their arrival time and showed up right when they said they would. Then they quickly had everything packed up and were off to the second stop. The rest of the move went just as well. There was no damage to any of our things or the buildings. It was a great job at a great price.

Very impressed with District Relocators! I’m never moving myself ever again and I’m never using another moving service after such a great experience! The moving crew was right on time, extremely speedy, and very professional. Akeem, Derrick, Rome, and Breon were AWESOME! Thank you!

My boyfriend and I have both used DR twice now (separately) and found our respective first experiences to be better than our most recent move.
He has used their pack and move service both times. No problems with the packing, materials, or time. The first move was seamless. My first move with the team from Arlington into DC was also seamless. The crew was fast, efficient, and careful with my belongings. I can’t recall any damages for either of our moves more than a year ago.
A few weeks ago we moved into an apartment together and used two crews to pack up our units. There was some confusion on the part of the dispatcher and she sent a much larger team than was necessary for my studio. Two of the four crew members openly complained to me as if I had anything to do with their arrangement. I repeatedly had to remind them that certain large bulky items I didn’t box (like a microwave) needed to be moved by their team.
Since my sister recently had a horrible moving experience with another company I shelled out the extra $ 50 for full coverage and am grateful for it. I had an extra queen mattress and box spring that needed to be delivered to Fairfax County (well before west bound evening rush hour) and again the team bickered over who would deliver it. The mattress was damaged and it has now been three weeks with no reply from the company.
My boyfriend went with the basic coverage and unfortunately quite a few pieces got beat-​up. He had to toss two torn canvasses that the team didn’t wrap and were therefore ripped. A few large pieces of his furniture were also noticeably nicked.
I was disappointed with the overall attitude of my crew and our collective experience this move.

James, Jerome, and Darwin were the best, most professional movers. Took great care of everything — heavily padded and carefully handled. Would highly recommend. Thanks for everything guys.

Just got moved in by four gentlemen: Jay, Chris, Carlton, and Rome from District Relocators and they did an AWESOME job getting my stuff into an awkwardly placed apartment/​building. They arrived on time, helped me get my stuff from a pod I had delivered to a service center and into my new place about 30 miles away. These guys expertly handled getting my stuff here safely and then getting a ridiculous volume of books and boxes into an older building with no elevator.
I would go with these guys again in a heartbeat and will recommend them to any of my friends moving in the DC area.

I was a little scared about some of the reviews on DR on here — particularly about the broken items. I prepared accordingly by boxing up my favorite breakables and such and taking them in my own car to my new apartment. However, I felt that Rome, Al, and Shemar, the three awesome movers that came, were very detailed and careful the entire time. They handed me my lampshades because they did not want to run the risk of ruining them which I thought was responsible of them. They were courteous and worked quickly and strategically.
They were a little late but DR does give basically like a 30 minute definite window with the possibility of a full hour. I just wished the office would have called me to give me an update after the ½ hour so that I wouldn’t have gotten anxious and called myself (my loading dock was only reserved for a set time and I was nervous we wouldn’t finish on time).
Now, the hiccup I had was that unfortunately I was moving for a newer building to an older one with smaller doorways and hallways so my couch just wouldn’t fit but they tried their best (twice) and tried to help me resolve having a random couch in my possession without anywhere to put it — they went above an beyond (a drive to local uhaul storage facility, and then another drive to another place to store it when uhaul didn’t work out!). Because they finished as quickly as they did, they had the time with the 3 hour minimum and only went over a bit more due to the extra moving around so I didn’t pay an arm and a leg over the estimate.
Holley who was the office sales lady was helpful but I do think their online system could be much better for booking and outlining all of the items that you have — DR’s system is very old school and not as detailed as other moving companies that I requested quotes from. They should update that — I think it would help their movers too (for example, they didn’t know that I had clothes on hangers that I thought they would bring garment boxes for which is what has happened when I moved with other moving companies — but that’s because I wrote it out in my quote request but I don’t know if they share all of that with their movers). It worked out fine but that’s because I don’t have tons of stuff and had my own garment bags for the extra sensitive stuff (just not enough for all my stuff).
Again, I think Shemar, Al, and Rome are valuable employees overall at DR and you should try to request them if you use the company.

It has been over a year since our move and we are still trying to get money reimbursed for the thermostat that the movers broke. When you call their office number a call center will answer, take a message and then no one will return your call. The nice call center lady does not know how you can speak to an employee of the company. It’s so shady.
I have called numerous times throughout the year, sent my receipt for reimbursement, and emailed them as well. Nothing. No response. No call. No reimbursement.
This company is the worst. I will be filling a complaint with the regulators and sending a letter to the BBB.

My husband and I used District Relocators twice. The first time they did a decent job and they looked so good on Unilocal that we booked with them again.
During the second experience the actual move was fine. The movers were really friendly and quick. Unfortunately, they broke three items during our move. Accidents happen and we had purchased the optional insurance, so we weren’t too worried about it.
We found the process to get paid for our broken items to be arduous and frustrating. The woman that answers the main phone number is polite and very sweet, but she was not able to help us with the claim. We were told that only the owner could handle our claim. The owner was difficult to reach and largely unresponsive. My husband is ridiculously persistent, so we eventually got paid, but it took leaving messages every day over the course of three weeks, and threatening to file a formal complaint with DOT (they regulate insurance for movers) before we FINALLY received payment.
Ultimately, we did get paid a fair price for the broken items, but the experience of having to badger him for the money was a negative one and a huge waste of time. We won’t be using this company again.

Arrived over two hours late due to maintenance in the morning. No one called. I had to call ten times to speak with someone. They brought extra people because of this but still completed the move in the quoted amount of time.
They left garbage everywhere in the old house as well as furniture we told them to move and moved at a slow pace.

Worth every penny. These guys came and were on time, got to work right away, needed little direction, but accommodated everything that my wife and I wanted. They have great attitudes and an army of dudes that just straight up tackled my tough apartment in no time. They also moved us into an old apartment building with no elevator, and were extremely efficient about taking big pieces of furniture up stairs. They were also super fun and have a great attitudes joking with me the whole time, which makes the terrible process of moving all the better. We gave them a huge tip, and even with that they came out well under the prices quoted by all the other major movers in the city.
Can’t give these guys enough of a good review, and if you’re ever in doubt about selecting moverstThese should be your guys.

I moved on May 3, 2015 and am so glad I went with these guys! I made the mistake of waiting until the week of my move to book movers and no one was able to accommodate me at a good price except District Relocators. I was especially concerned about the amount of time it would take to move me considering my original building had no elevator, terrible parking (on street), and was on the second floor– but these guys had no problems!
They arrived on time, their truck fit perfectly in the spot I saved for parking, and they moved me out of my studio into my one bed apartment (5 miles away in Sunday Traffic) in 2 hours 20 minutes. Nothing was damaged, all my furniture was wrapped, bed and box spring mattresses were covered, and they even had time to reassemble my bed, move my long bookshelf around and gently handle my antique Loveseat.
I would recommend them for any type of move: as I had a lot of furniture yet this wasn’t a problem. Also, these three guys move at lightning speed so you will get the best bang for your buck! Overall I paid $ 415 and can say it was the best and worry-​free move I’ve ever had.

VERY pleased with my moving experience this weekend. The movers arrived right in their promised window and were incredibly efficient. I had 4 stops that included an annoying disassembly and reassembly of a bed (that apparently the movers were not aware of) but they didn’t complain and did a fantastic job (the bed weighs a million pounds and was a storage bed, so pretty complicated).
The only minor glitch was that I was charged more than I was quoted, due to company error, so that when it came to pay (in cash) at the end of the move… I had to scrounge for extra money to tip what I wanted.
However, when I called this morning to tell them about the mistake they immediately apologized and began issuing a refund (which they graciously offered to do through PayPal– so it will be quick and easy for both parties).
I would absolutely without a doubt recommend them to everyone and anyone– and if you have a piece of furniture you’re unsure about taking apart, request SAM! He was the best.

I can’t say enough great things about this company. They arrived promptly and even though I had my phone on silent (because I’m a moron), they were SUPER nice about me not answering my phone.
They took care to wrap everything– TV, mattress, etc. and didn’t complain about anything. They made jokes and made me feel really comfortable. Jermaine, Derrick, and Chris were extremely professional and I would definitely use the company again– and I hope they would send out the SAME three people– because they were amazing!
