We bought a house in DC with a Bulthaup kitchen in place. Really needed to get the knives and paper towel off of the countertop — it’s a classic DC bachelor pad kitchen– read sleek but small. Checked the hours in Georgetown and walked over there in the freezing cold. Lo and behold the store was shut tight. Not a happy camper. Left a message and got a phone call a few days later. Still not a happy camper.
Next time I was back in San Francisco I stopped by the shop there — open as promised — and ordered the knife rack and paper towel holder.
They were not inexpensive and they are shipped from Germany so took quite a while, but I picked them up and popped them in my tote bag for the trip back across the country yesterday. Just finished installing them. The instructions are not fabulous, but in fact they were very easy to arrange, once you get the concept.
So one star for Georgetown and five stars for San Francisco and three stars for not fabulous user instructions. But I am, at the end of the day, very happy and my spouse has his cleared countertops.

Kitchens are living spaces. Isn’t that why everyone ends up in the kitchen at every great house party you’ve ever been to?
If I could have a bulthaup kitchen I’d probably just go ahead and sleep in it too. They’re that well-​designed and gorgeous! Founded in Germany in 1949 by Martin Bulthaup, the company’s aim — «perfect comfort, perfect ergonomics and a minimalist core concept» — is seen throughout its products including drawers that never slam shut and refrigerators that seem to float along with the rest of the cabinetry.
It’s no wonder why bulthaup came in at number five in a survey of the top 30 German luxury brands. Walking around in this space is like a breath of fresh (actually more like, IMPECCABLE) air.
