History

Established in 1974.

I have been in the wholesale and retail business for over 50 years, mainly specializing in home accessories, I always wanted to have my own store, so when the opportunity presented itself, I opened a small store, filled it with all the merchandise I was familiar with from my wholesale experience. When I finally opened up my store, I found out that I knew nothing about the retail business. So, everything I learned from that point was learned the very hard way.

We never sold much of any one type of product and almost went out of business several times trying different types of merchandise. Nothing seemed to work until we tried a few replacement lampshades. The moment the shades arrived they flew right out of the store. So, to make a long story short, the shades ended up pretty much taking up the whole store. They then became to be our main business, and we have now grown over the years and have become extremely knowledgeable.

Mort is amazing!!! He helped me find the perfect replacement shade for a lamp I purchased many years ago at Gumps. The original shade was damaged during a move. The finishing Touch specializes in lamps shades and offers a great selection. Mort offers the kind of personal service that it is rare to find in today’s retail world. Please be aware that lampshades in this store are not returnable! I went in looking for a lampshade for my sister’s home. I did not have the measurements that I needed, but had a fairly good idea of the size and shape. Mort was very knowledgeable, and, knowing that I had only a rough idea of what I needed, he showed me a shade that he and I thought might work, assuring me that I could bring it back if it didn’t work. He did not mention that his shades are non-returnable…exchangeable, but not returnable. I knew he did not carry the lampshade that would work. When I found the shade would not work, I took it back and was told icily of the store’s policy. He pointed out the sign and the warning on the receipt stating this policy. I just felt that he should have advised me when we were debating over the correct size and not led me to believe that it was returnable.

Mort is a wonder. I call him Superman of finding the right shade for antique lamps. He IS THE BEST!!! First time out he found us the most beautiful shade. We got it home and wowwy it just looked beautiful with the surrounding area décor. Amazing!!! I just LOVE, Mort! Mort is, simply put, the BEST !! I bring lamps from my home in Arizona for Mort to advise me on shades & finials. He is spot on every time. I’ve learned that you can’t just throw on any lampshade if you really want to accentuate the lamp & the light it casts. He is old school in that he really takes his time with you and will try as many lampshades as you desire, though I’ve never had to go past a second one to find the perfect shade. When I’ve thought I’d need to leave a lamp for cord shortening, he does it right there. The shades he carries are high quality and beautiful… to me, good lighting is a MUST, and Mort’s expertise always helps me attain that. Well worth schlepping my beautiful lamps for Mort to give them that ‘Finishing Touch’.

My mother in-​law kindly offered to get a lamp of ours fixed. She called here and they said they could fix it. All it required was a new socket and the proprietor was able to fix it in 5, minutes while she waited. He charged her $ 7.50 for a $ 1.85 piece (priced at home depot) ok I can live with that, but then he charged her $ 45!!! for labor. My assumption is that, that is a full hour and criminal. Not only will we never go here again but im sure my mother-​in law will warn every person in every social club she is in at Rossmoor.

We had an old lamp that had been languishing in a back room for many years and decided to put it in our family room with a new lampshade. The original shade had bitten the dust many moons ago. We found this place by it being referred to us by a clerk in a lighting store in another city. Mort was very knowledgeable and suggested replacing some of the old style hardware with modern to accommodate a new shade. The selection of lampshades was also good. I would recommend this shop to anyone who needs lamp repair and/​or parts replacement.

Mort was great! Fixed my lamp the same day, which needed all new insides. Only complaint was a bought a shade for $ 95 which after I left the store, I had buyers remorse as it was the same looking shade that you can buy in Cost Plus World Market for $ 12.99 on sale for a basic burlap style drum shade. I took it back the very next day and he would not take it except for store credit. That should have been told to me prior to purchase! Left a bad taste in my mouth. Not a good way to encourage return business. He does know his stuff, however! Since the market for repairing lamps is very tiny, you are kinda stuck. Just remember, store credit only! Even if less than 24 hrs!

I brought a lamp to this store to have the cord examined. I couldn’t help but notice the huge selection of lamp shades. Mort, the owner, knows a lot about lamp shades and will fit the perfect shade to your lamp even it your lamp is old. Bring your lamp in to have it fit because they have no return policy. I found Mort and Tami to be stand up folks and very fair to deal with.

I would not recommend this shop for lamp repair. I went into the shop without my lamp last week to ask if they did repairs, and how much. The older gentleman, who appears to be the owner, told me it was difficult to say without seeing the lamp, but they charge $ 25 an hour for lamp repairs. Today, I took my lamp in to the shop and was told by a woman that there’s a $ 45 charge up front plus parts to repair the lamp. When I told her I was told something different, the older gentleman came out from the back and denied what he originally told me then proceeded to argue with me about it until I left with my lamp. I consider it poor business practice to misrepresent your charges to a potential customer in order to get them to bring their lamp in, then zap them with a higher charge totally different than the one originally quoted.

Finding a lampshade for a Stiffel lamp was very difficult since this mfg has gone out of business. Mort was very knowledgeable and knew the exact lampshade that would fit. He was friendly and accommodating and a pleasure to do business with him.

Stay out of this store… no matter how hard you try, returning something is impossible. The owner tries to intimidate you so you will keep his merchandise. After shopping carefully, you will see that you can easily get like products at 1⁄3 the price he charges.

I brought 2 lamps for repair. The repair person checked both lamps and found that one of them was fine all it needed was a new light bulb. I’m sure another store would have found something wrong just to be able to charge me. The 2nd lamp was quoted at an acceptable price and repaired on the spot while I waited. I would highly recommend this shop for repair.
