History

Established in 1986.

The Hospital of Enlightenment — that was the idealistic name Edgar Cayce and a group of financial backers initially gave the unique healing facility they built in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1928. Over three-​quarters of a century later, after numerous changes in ownership, the old building still stands tall, serving today as the headquarters of the Cayce organization’s continuing worldwide work. And in many respects the original name still fits. When it was constructed, Edgar Cayce considered the hospital a dream come true. As early as 1910, while working as a studio photographer who gave psychic readings in his spare time, he was notified in a reading that he was destined to operate a hospital. The building remains a proud symbol of a noble mission -«That we might make manifest our love of God and man.» And its fundamental purpose would not change, but find new forms of expression. Edgar Cayce’s dream is still coming true.

I enjoyed my view to the metaphysical library. It is the second largest meta library in the world. The Cayce readings were helpful. I enjoyed exploring the bookshelf and learning about the Atlanteans and the Leumerians. Interesting to consider other beliefs about the origin of humanity.
The librarians are so helpful and knowledgable.
I come here to reconnect with nature and relax. The Koi pond is rejuvenating and listening to the waterfall is great for my meditation practice. It was so much fun, very relaxing.

Some of the speakers on the free programs are excellent. I particularly recommend Peter Van Daam (a frequent speaker) and Ellyn Dye (an infrequent speaker). Dye’s main topic is near death experiences. Her talk was one of the most fascinating talks I’ve heard in years. You can see some of her talks on youtube. Van Daam is a terrific speaker, but seems to me to be reluctant to engage listeners in conversation – perhaps he has decided that no one in his audiences is worth talking to. He likes to refer to his MIT degree, although I’ve never observed anything particularly scientific in his approach. You can see him in a 1981 video (not directly related to Cayce’s teachings) on youtube called «John Holt on The Phil Donahue Show discussing homeschooling 1981.» At the Virginia Beach Cayce center, I also heard a third-​rate talk on love by a third speaker, and a fourth-​rate talk on Cayce’s Bible stories by a fourth speaker. Thus, I’d have to say that the talks are a mixed bag. They have a very nice library and a very nice meditation room. The library has a lot of wonderful books not related to Cayce, along with a large Cayce collection. Anyone can walk in and use the library. Christians ought to find Cayce tolerable, as Cayce made great use of the Bible. Unfortunately, a lot of very closed-​minded Christians won’t listen to anything that mentions topics they’re unfamiliar with. I like going to places like the Cayce center to hear things you won’t hear in church. A lot of churches are really dull – you just hear the same thing over and over.

This was the highlight of our trip to Virginia Beach. Learning about Edgar Cayce and his work was a wonderful experience. The staff is passionate about Mr. Cayce and are thoroughly knowledgeable of the Cayce readings and are happy to help. We watched a short film detailing his life and work and took a tour of the building. The energy on the grounds is vibrant, as if good karma will come to you just for stopping by.
I also scheduled a hypnosis therapy for past life regression. I have always been curious about the practice and was excited to see that it’s a service offered at the spa. What an interesting hour and a half! Definitely worth the $ 120-​just to have the feeling of better understanding life as it pertains to me.
I also became a member — I can look through the Cayce readings online and there are other perks. If you become a member while visiting, you get a couple of books and magazine and get discounts on purchases. If you’re into spirituality and enlightenment, this is a delicious cup of tea!

This is a very interesting place, and a nice change of pace when your other days are filled with going to the beach and eating out with the masses. We visited while on vacation, so it was a refreshing break in the action.
There are several buildings on the property. One building houses classrooms and educational areas, as well as a health spa. The other building includes a free guided tour, a free video about who Mr. Cayce was, a library, and a great little gift store with lots of neat stuff. Everyone was really nice but not in a hippy-​dippy way. They were just pleasant people, and I didn’t feel like they were trying to induct me into any weird cults or anything. It’s simply about spirituality and holistic healing methods, and I found it kind of fascinating.
There is a lovely labyrinth you can walk for meditation or just to calm your mind and view the ocean. There is also a Japanese garden with small water falls and benches for musing. A peaceful experience, and I hope to come back again next time I’m in the area. I wish I lived closer so I could try some of the free classes, especially the ESP testing.

An oasis of community and peace. Upon entering the center, you can feel the love surrounding you and the welcoming spirit of everyone at the Center. The meditation room is incredible –the view and serenity here is amazing. Beautiful grounds and peaceful setting.

I was flipping through a free travel mag about Hampton Roads and the surrounding area, and saw an ad to visit the Association for Research and Enlightenment… I thought to myself, «I want to be enlightened.» So I called and asked about things listed on the flyer – free meditation, daily speakers and a tour.
I went to the place not knowing anything about Edgar Cayce. Hey, I’m impulsive!
Alone, by itself, it’s not a destination spot. But if you’re close by, definitely check it out. They have a beautiful labyrinth to walk and fish pond gardens. I was late and missed the video about who Edgar Cayce was, but I got the gist of his works on the free walking tour.
The June 3rd tour guide was really friendly, positive, upbeat, and informative.
The 3:30pm presenter was a no show so that was disappointing.
I’d like to go back and spend time in the library. They have an amazing collection of yoga philosophy books. The library also has free Wi-​fi. You’re free to spend time in the library – you can just show up whenever they are open.
The bookstore was cool. It was fairly priced. They have tons of books and gift items. If you fill out a card at the front desk, you get a bag with a coupon for 10% off on one item from the bookstore. I also got a free gift in the bag – a free Edgar Cayce book. Cool!
Everyone was really nice. I didn’t know what to expect. It was not creepy or weird. It was a lovely time. I’m glad I went!

Loved it! Free meditation class, Free ESP class, and etc. People there are super loving and caring! I found out that my husband has post cognition and precognition ability and I have a psychic ability according to their test! I wish!!! We had a fun!!!

I admit I’m not a spiritual person, but I’ve always been intrigued by the Edgar Cayce Center. It’s like spirituality and sort of science all in one. If you don’t know anything about Edgar Cayce, here’s the brief bio: Cayce accidentally stumbled upon his gift of spiritual healing in his childhood and continued to use his gift to alleviate the pain of others. This center is a tribute to him and his method. This world renowned spiritual and holistic medicine center is a staple of Virginia Beach and a great balance to Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcast Network compound.
The center offers a wide variety of services for a fee and even have a few events for free. My favorite free event is the ESP testing! It’s a cool place to go and meet awesome people and open your mind to something new.

At the North End heading up from the Oceanfront, is the Edgar Cayce Center, an ominous building randomly sitting among the beach houses. Whether you are familiar with the life and work of Edgar Cayce or not, this is one place you cannot miss.
Although I am personally unsure how much I buy into the idea of psychic readings and its related jargon, I do know when I am having a blast. Every weekend they host free ESP testing, meditation classes and other weekly events.
The people are eclectic and fun. They even have a yoga balcony overlooking the sea. There is a gift shop, of course, but there is always actually unique and interesting pieces of jewelry.
Whether psychic or silly, the Edgar Cayce Center is entertaining and a great place to take advantage of free events.
