Beach Veterinary Emergency Center

Oh man, we’ve unfortunately had to utilize Beach Vet Emergency Center several times in the past year when our mini-​schnauzer ingested gum on one occasion, chocolate on another, and got a nasty wasp sting (all after her regular vet’s hours).
We were able to check-​in quickly, she was triaged appropriately each time, and the examining staff and veterinarian were kind and thorough. We’ve been without a disaster for awhile now and we’re hoping to keep up the trend but if you find yourself in a companion animal emergency, I would absolutely recommend Beach Emergency.
Since this is an emergency facility, it’s going to be pricey but I found that their costs were reasonable. Our visits varied in length (as did the severity of our emergencies) but I also thought the wait and total visit time was reasonable.

We had to make the tough decision to put Marley down. It’s been a week and today I received a sympathy card in the mail from Strawbridge Animal Hospital with notes from all of their staff. It made me sad to go back to the day but it really made me realize that some are in this business only to make money while others are so compassionate and caring.

The only reason why im giving this place 3 stars is because the actual vet and nurse were very kind. I spent a total of 300 dollars and my dogs health has deteriorated since we took him there. We were told he had hook worms yet when we took him
To his regular ver the next day and we got his stool tested it came back negative for worms! They gave us medicine that gave him the runs for a few days it was just awful dont take your pets there!

I had to take my pup because she developed a very bad case of hot spots on her face. It smelled like pus and looked pretty gross. It was Sunday and I did not want to wait till Monday to take her to the Vet. I took her to this location and was pretty happy about it. The nurse did sound a little irritated and snotty over the phone, but later I understood why. They were busy and some people were super annoying. The nurse turned out to be very sweet. She let me sit in one of their rooms with my dog while filling out the application form because my dog was going crazy and was pulling me in every direction. The nurse that came in to take the vitals and stuff was very sweet and caring. Then we sat and waited for doc for about 40 minutes, but he was the only doctor there so it was understandable. He came in took a look and gave me the diagnose and what we needed to do. They had to sedate my pup, shave the infected areas, clean it, clean her ear canals because it looked like she had something there, then they gave me two bottles of pills and spray to disinfect areas. The total was $ 320 plus some change. I was worried it would be about $ 1000 or something like that so I was pretty happy. They got her cleaned up and ready to go in about 30 to 45 minutes. The nurse went over all of her meds with me and even helped me to get my puppy into the car because she was still under anesthesia and had a big E-​cone on her head. Also they are open ²⁴⁄₇ so I had to call them like four times because my puppy was crying and would not eat or drink for the first few hours after the surgery and they were very helpful, they explained the side effect of the anesthesia wearing off and that she will get better once it’s completely wears off.
They are not up in your face kissing your «behind» and giving you cocoa and cookies (they do have vending machine inside though), it’s a busy urgent care facility for your pets. The initial fee is $ 70.00 and that’s the price you pay when something happens to your pet. A poor nurse has to stick the thermometer in dogs rear end, so yeah, I can understand their prices. By the way, my total for the visit of $ 320 included that $ 70 amount. You don’t need to call for an appointment just bring your pet in.
One more thing that was very considerate of them is that Beach Veterinary Emergency Center sent the report of my visit to my regular vet doctor so when I went in the other day for a check up on her treatment, they already knew what was done to my puppy and had everything ready for my visit.
In response to the lady that wrote a review about a guy with a dog being seriously injured and vet would not see him before they pay $ 70.00 is so wrong. They did not charge one person before seeing the pet. Every one of the people with their pets paid AFTER the visit. They would not last long as a business if they treated people and their loved pets the way this lady described. And what kind of a vet doctor would refuse to tell a man what to do? Just doesn’t make sense. And another thing, they will not come out and say you owe $ 5,000 for the visit. Before they do anything they bring out a quote and you sign it if you agree! if you don’t you are free to go.
In general, I was very pleased with the services they provided. Everything is simple and easy. I really like that the doctor made a diagnose, explained what needs to be done and then they give you an estimate what it will cost. So you have choices.

I have taken my dogs here many times and yes even though a little pricey (it is an ER vet), they did such a great job and they got my pup out of there as soon as possible so I wouldn’t have to pay more money and gave me clear instructions on what to do at home to continue the care. All the of staff are very friendly and caring. They treated everyone I saw walk through the door with the highest respect and empathy toward their loved ones. No matter how busy they are the vets take time to sit down and talk with you and don’t make you feel rushed. I highly recommend them!

It’s a shame when people are more interested in money than an animal and using animal control to force someone into treatment. People are allowed to get second opinions and treatment from other places if they don’t agree.

There is never a good way to visit an ER but I’d like to say that this was a good place. They took my puppy in and checked him out in a friendly and considerate manner. There is a $ 70 minimum fee (a cursory check-​up where vitals are taken and the main issue is investigated) and payment is due at the end of the visit. This wasn’t a problem in my case but if your pet has an extreme emergency, the bill could rack up quickly.
Just a word of warning… The young lady at the counter was rather snotty (both on the phone and when I arrived in person) in the beginning but her attitude improved after a while. For a person in her position I can say that she lacks a certain amount of compassion.
The doctor who worked with me, Dr. McDonald was very nice and informative. She reassured me that my pup would be okay and gave me clear instructions on what to look for through the night to make sure everything would be okay with him.
I recommend this vet/​ER. I hope that you don’t have to visit but in the event you need help in the middle if the night, this one the way to go.

As an emergency clinic, I expect them to have meds to dispense upon discharge since they’re usually seeing pets in the middle of the night for emergencies. When they are out of the medicine, I expect them to write the script correctly. When they have run out of the medicine AND they write the script incorrectly, I expect them to go out of their way to right their wrong. The receptionist and Dr. McDonald could both benefit from class in customer service. They caused my dog unnecessary prolonged suffering and me a lot of trouble and heartache. I would NEVER recommend anyplace that would employ Dr. McDonald.
Bay-​Beach Veterinary Hospital at 4340 Virginia Beach Blvd was wonderful. Take your pets there.

The only two things that truly satisfy me about this place are:
1) They are open on nights and weekends when my vet is closed.
2) The actual doctor that saw my cat.
Otherwise? Boooooo…
The receptionist was kind of snotty and seemed like she absolutely hates her job. She had the same attitude with a woman who was crying because she was upset. She had a terrible tone of voice with another person on the phone and rolled her eyes at the customer on the phone in front of others waiting in the lobby. If you hate your job that much, go work somewhere else! The last thing a distressed person needs is your crappy attitude, young lady!
Also, the prices… wow. $ 70 just for the exam fee. Taking advantage of people who just want their animals to live or what? Not cool.
The doctor was fantastic, though. He was very amiable and seemed exceptionally knowledgeable. He had a great attitude and was great with my little kitty.
I will only come back if I have to, God forbid.
P. S. — To give a good idea of the pace of things, I got there with 4 people in front of me and the whole ordeal took 2 hours. For the exam, a bottle of pills, and 4 days worth of bland food for my kitten, the total bill was $ 130.38.

Unfortunately I have had to visit this Emergency vet a few times. Why do pets wait for weekends to have issues?
My 10 year old Catahoula was suddenly uh, leaking urine constantly. Concerned that it might be something serious I took her in to get checked out.
The doc talked with me about possible causes and diagnostics. A physical exam showed there was no immediate cause for treatment. She recommended tests, but agreed that it could wait until I could get her to my vet. A $ 70 bill was worth the peace of mind.
I have taken my other dog in and she has had X-​rays, staples and was given prescriptions. They obviously charge more than a typical vet, but it isn’t extreme. I feel comforted knowing there is help 24 hours should my pets need it.

We have been seeing Dr. Berdoulay at the Beach Veterinary Referral Center /​Emergency Center for his internal medicine specialty for a few years now with our rescue dog Katy Bug. In this time we have been in for at least 20+ appointments or treatments. I have never had an even remotely bad experience in his office. All of the staff there are very polite and caring. Dr. Berdoulay is one of the best Veterinarians I have ever had the privilege of working with. He is very competent, caring and knowledgeable. He always takes the time to meet with you and go over his findings and /​or recommendations. He never rushed through any of our appointments and always made sure to answer all of our questions. He is great at presenting his findings & recommendations and allows the owner to make an informed decision regarding the care of their pet without pushing things on you. He was always up for other ideas or suggestions that we would think of (mainly holistic treatments). Anytime that he was unsure of anything (Example: We asked if there was any weird side effects of a specific medication with an holistic treatment.), he would always go and look it up or research the answer and not pretend to know everything. Which, for me, is one of the most important & honest thing a person can do. He also took the time to answer any of our questions over the phone (either with him or his technician or colleague) when we would call his office. In all of the appointments that we had, he would rarely run late. Even if he was running late, he still took the time & had the patience to have a successful meeting/​exam. Him and his office was completely fine with calling in prescriptions or refills or writing a prescription for us to fill medications somewhere else where it might be cheaper. (Where a lot of clinics or Veterinarians sometimes take offense or wont do it at all.) When we were having an urgent problem with Katy Bug I called the office to see if Dr B had any openings for the day. He was completely booked & didn’t have any openings, however they did work us into his schedule later that day (even though they don’t usually do walk-​ins) because they listened to my concerns and knew how urgent the situation was. We of course had to wait to be squeezed in in their spare moments but it was no problem at all!!! I was so thankful and appreciative for them fitting us in!!! Every one of the staff members (including the other Doctors there) that I met or that helped take care of my dog, were very friendly & took the time and energy to get to know me and my dog. When it came to the end of my dogs life, every one of the staff members & Doctors came out to me and gave me a hug and told me just how much that they loved my Katy Bug and just how special that she really was. There love was genuine and their loving and kind words meant so much.
I would 100% recommend Dr. Berdoulay and his office to everyone!!!

While pricey, I feel our dog got very good care and I had the ability to keep informed of his progress. We didn’t experience wait times, perhaps we were lucky so it’s quite possible someone reading this will end up waiting a long time for their pet to be taken care of. The surgeon Dr. Puglisi was personable and answered my questions. I hope we won’t need to go back, but if we do, we will go knowing our pet is in good hands.
