Martin was very professional and prompt when replying to my voicemail message. He did a great job in repairing my siding. I would recommend him to anyone that is looking for a great siding contractor.

We have been working with Martin for occasional projects on our rental home for about a year. He is a treasure! Very responsive, helps suggest ways to make repairs cost-​effective, and completes the work quickly and for a reasonable price. We have asked him to work on a few small projects that other contractors might not think worth the time, and he has always been respectful and helpful. We are lucky to have found him.

A friend highly recommended Calla Builders in 2008 and we’ve been working with Martin ever since. He’s great to work with: efficient, a good problem-​solver, affordable with high-​quality results. We own a home and several rentals in the Logan Square area, so over the years Martin has renovated 5 kitchens, 7 bathrooms, a few garages, several porches and has installed countless laminate floors, siding, soffits, cabinets, sinks… as well as painting and staining inside and outside. We trust him with every aspect of the job; sometimes giving him a few guidelines (usually budgetary) and letting him take care of everything and other times giving him our highly detailed vision. He’s equally good in both cases and is great at communicating options, layouts, ideas and budgets when appropriate.

Full disclosure: Martin has become a very good friend of mine. In fact, I encouraged him to start this Unilocal page. But when I met Martin over four years ago we started out with a typical customer/​client relationship. One day I was dropping my kid off at day care and I saw him building a new front porch on another house. It was shaping up really nicely so I asked for an estimate on a deck for our house. His estimate was really reasonable, and when we met with him, both my wife and I were struck by how collaborative he was on the project, asking for our desires and making suggestions to add aesthetic value and save money and the same time. When he started, we were impressed with how fast he worked, and how dauntlessly he kept at it through a cold week in February. It was done within the week and we were thrilled with the result. Since that project he has become our go-​to guy whenever we have remodeling needs.
He has built us two decks, laid paver steps from our basement to our back yard, repaired an old chimney, helped remodel and drywall two bedrooms, and installed electrical and plumbing upgrades.
I’ll sum up Martin and his company this way—
PROS: Martin is the most honest contractor I have ever met. He won’t cut corners and guarantees his work. His prices are very competitive and will usually be the best bid in the lot. Martin is extremely friendly and will explain to you in detail how a job will be performed. He always has suggestions for materials or designs that he thinks his customers will like. He is also very creative in his construction techniques and has built some masterful designs for us and other people.
CONS: (Since I want to give a balanced review I will include this, though it’s not necessarily a negative) Calla Builders is only Martin. Don’t expect a large team of workers to descend on your house for a large project. While he works very quickly he is still only one guy.
I highly recommend Calla Builders for your remodeling/​handyman needs.
