Established in 2012.

Ali Davis and Kelly Shirk opened The Sugar Lab in April 2012, just a few months after Ali graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a degree in biology. They decided take their passion for baking and open a bakery. Since then, this Mother-​Daughter duo has continued to develop new recipes from both their own ideas and customer requests.

Ali graduated in December 2011 with a B.S. in Biological Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. During college, her love of baking and cake decorating flourished. Whenever she had spare time, she was baking for her sorority sisters, close friends, and co-​workers. After gradation, she kept coming back to baking; nothing else seemed to satisfy her. Just a few months later, her dream became reality
