Established in 2012.

Ali Davis and Kelly Shirk opened The Sugar Lab in April 2012, just a few months after Ali graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a degree in biology. They decided take their passion for baking and open a bakery. Since then, this Mother-​Daughter duo has continued to develop new recipes from both their own ideas and customer requests.

Ali graduated in December 2011 with a B.S. in Biological Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. During college, her love of baking and cake decorating flourished. Whenever she had spare time, she was baking for her sorority sisters, close friends, and co-​workers. After gradation, she kept coming back to baking; nothing else seemed to satisfy her. Just a few months later, her dream became reality

Beyond fantastic!
We went to The Sugar Lab today after a long day of running around, and it was the perfect way to end our day! The woman behind the counter was absolutely lovely, helpful and you could really tell she cared about what she made.
Let me get to the good stuff though!

My husband and I were SO happy with the service Ali provided at Sugar Lab. She was easy to correspond with via email and phone. It was honestly such a pleasure to work with her. Not only did she provide our beautiful wedding cake but Ali was so great at providing a fun groom’s cake and keeping it a surprise until the wedding day. In addition, we were even able to rent some of their cake stands as extras for decoration we needed. Wedding planning is always stressful but Sugar Lab was one of our favorite vendors. We did not feel taken advantage of at all. Ali was honest, genuine, and did not push any unnecessary upselling. We will definitely be going to Sugar Lab for any future baked goods.
I highly recommend Almond Cake with White Chocolate Raspberry frosting. It is delicious!

We first found The Sugar Lab at the Casa Pacifica Food and Wine Festival over a year before our wedding. When it was time to find a baker, I had yet to forget about their AMAZING chocolate peanut butter cupcake — and I returned on a conquest to find it for our big day!
Ali was fabulous! She was so flexible and was easy to meet with under a short timeframe. We planned a trip to Ventura just to meet with bakers and taste wedding cake, however The Sugar Lab was the only place we went (and needed to go). Ali was so friendly, open, responsive, and fun to meet. She worked with us to create a dessert buffet complete with a cutting cake, mini pies, cupcakes, and macaroons. You can’t make a bad cake flavor choice there– everything was delicious.

Yum! Every single cupcake we chose was delicious. They were so tasty and moist and super flavorful! I will return for more. We went a little after noon and were running low on my favorite, red velvet, but they were yummy for my tummy!

My husband has a sweet tooth with a soft spot for cupcakes, so we knew we would go the cupcake route for our wedding instead of cake. I found Ali online and drove out to Ventura for the tasting. We knew we found our baker when the husband declared them to be «the best cupcakes ever.» We opted for 180 cupcakes and a small cutting cake and there were maybe 6 cupcakes left over for around 130 people — needless to say, people loved them! The flavor selection is awesome, and Ali was great to work with. Highly recommend!

The Sugar Lab baked our wedding cake and it was delicious and looked amazing — exactly what we wanted! It was hard to choose the flavors, because they were all so yummy, but we selected the lemon and chocolate. Everyone at the wedding raved about it. I would highly recommend the Sugar Lab for any occasion!

My experience with The Sugar Lab was nothing short of amazing. Planning a wedding from 3,000 miles away is a challenge, but the cake was the most painless (and most delicious) part of my entire planning. On the practical side, the cake and delivery were reasonably priced, even with travelling to Pismo Beach. And it was worth every penny. The cake looked amazing, and tasted even better. It was a s’mores cake, with toasted marshmallow frosting, and it stole the show. All in all, we couldn’t have been more satisfied with our experience and would do it again in a heartbeat!

Ali is amazing. There was no skimping on creativity, flavor, or design. We loved working with her and really appreciated that she went back and forth with us over a year to come of with the ideal cake. It was so beautiful and yummy. There’s something so fun about cupcakes, so I made the decision to purchase half a dozen for my Mom’s Birthday today.
I arrived at Sugar Lab at 1:45 PM they still had a wonderful selection to pick from, the clerk was patient as I contemplated what my Mom would enjoy and opted for the Blueberry, German Chocolate, and Snicker-​doodle.
A last minute splurge was to take a half dozen in to my office mates, I chose Smore’s, Chocolate & Peanut Butter Truffle, and Salted Caramel (my favorite).
The cost was about average to most of the bakeries in Ventura, and frankly if you desire to purchase specialty baked goods you have to be willing to fork over the extra money for a quality product.
The cupcakes were a hit the salted caramel was delicious, the cake was dense and the caramel frosting was not overpowering it was topped with gold sugar, yum.
If your having a sweet tooth and are in the need of little treat, stop in and buy one today!

It’s off the beaten path and you will not just happen across this place… But it is worth an intentional trip! We got 6 different flavors and decided to cut them up into sections so that we could try all of them because we couldn’t pick just one. We only made it through the first 3 between five of us — because they are very rich (not a bad thing). So far the Salted Carmel was by far the most scrumptious, however the key lime and snickerdoodle cupcakes were delish too. Today we plan to sample the s’mores, vanilla bean and peanut butter chocolate ones. Great presentation and packaging. Friendly service. Go there if you are in this region!

The Sugar Lab is the place I go when I want to indulge my sinful desires for cupcakes in Ventura, Oxnard & Camarillo. Every Tuesday they sell «bite size» portions of their cupcakes. The «bite-​size» are a way of convincing yourself that you aren’t getting too far off track your diet. They have seasonal flavors, I try them all and like them.
Call ahead and order, they will set them aside for you. Since they bake fresh daily & they can run out towards the end of the day.

I was excited after reading all these 5 star reviews but was rather disappointed. It is in an odd location and the interior was very small. I ended up getting one of each cupcake since I do plan on ordering more for events. It’s a hit or a miss, some had very good frosting but cake was too dry, some had awesome cake but frosting was too sweet. There wasn’t much information on a big menu or on a piece of paper/​flyer so I asked if they also did cakes. The lady told me they did. That was that, no other information given and I wasn’t in the mood to play a 21 question game. I guess they’re popular enough with their client list. Either way, good cupcakes, but nothing to write home about.

This bakery really came through for me. I needed to order custom cookies for a friend’s bridal shower and they came out beautiful. It was a sugar cookie and they matched the icing to the bride’s colors perfectly. The cookie included the couple’s initials and the wedding date and the cookies were delicious and fresh. Would use them again.

I’ve been tasting cupcakes & mini cupcakes for my daughters upcoming wedding. The Sugar Lab is by far the best. The customer service is awesome & the cupcakes are so delicious. My favorites are chocolate with vanilla frosting & the raspberry. Simply amazing. From the moment you walk in the store you know this place is going to be great because it smells great. Like a bakery should. Enjoy!

Oh me… oh my! Talk about satisfying your sweet tooth! I had no idea I lived down the street from this place. Probably not horrible since I could easily see myself swinging by for a little sugar pick-​me-​up.
I was on the hunt for a cute Valentines Day gift for my kids teachers. The ladies in the shop were very friendly. I ended up purchasing a half dozen cupcakes and for a slight additional cost, they boxed them up individually and ready for gifting.
My 4 year old and I shared a chocolate cupcake… it was delicious enough to send us into a chocolate coma. Thanks for a first great visit!
