A Reid & Sons

In 2013, I paid Alex of A. Reid & Sons over $ 700 for 3 separate jobs on my roof. I was initially satisfied with the first two repairs but he never completed the third repair. It was small job which he started and then he just left the roof in an unrepaired state exposed to the elements. Although I repeatedly (and politely) tried to contact Alex to complete the job, he just «vanished». I had paid him $ 120 for that third job but had to pay another contractor $ 200 to complete and fix the job he started since Alex used the wrong materials.
By the end of 2014, his other repairs on my roof have also come undone. I now have to pay other contractors to fix Alex’s original work. I’ve been told that again Alex used the wrong materials to do the job in the first place.
I assume this company is out of business, but in case it isn’t, stay away.

If I could put 0 stars I would have but Unilocal doesnt allow this, I called this guys some guy buy the name of Alex called back I gave him all the details and he never showed up nor did he ever bother to call and say I cant do the job. At the beginning he sounded professional but nothing.
Please dont waste your time and go elsewhere you’ll be glad you did, this guys are joke.

It’s not that I don’t like my tenants, but as a relatively new landlord I panic whenever they call me. This time around there was water damage on the ceiling caused by a leaking roof that the HOA hadn’t fixed timely. I called around to talk to various handymen and Alec was by far the best. He was very calm and level-​headed and just talked about the facts with me. Where others either (1) didn’t call me back at all, (2) put me way off because my job was too small, or (3) sensationalized the extent of work that needed to be done such that it’d sound like the place had to be demolished completely, Alec was straightforward and took me seriously. He was right on time and did a very thorough consultation. He gave me a very fair quote and followed up with pictures and more info afterward, which I greatly appreciated. I would definitely call him for any work in the future.

Perhaps I should have been suspicious of something not right when Alex wanted personal payment instead of professional payment. I found A. Reid & Sons via Angie’s List. They had a special $ 499 exterior trim paint special, but before I purchased it I wanted to verify that the trim of my house and my shed would be included. Alex came over, saw the situation here, and agreed that I qualified for the special. He said that he was available to start the following Monday. I told him that I would then go to the computer and take care of the payment via Angie’s List. He, however, insisted that I pay him directly instead. Then, when I handed him a check payable to A. Reid & Sons, he claimed that they were switching banks and asked me to write the check just to his name. This I did, but perhaps all of this should have been flags of concern for me?
Alex did show up a couple of weeks ago on the day scheduled, although a few hours late. Then, he asked me for an extension cord as he claimed that his had been stolen at a previous job. Again, another flag of concern was raised here that a so-​called professional would show up to a job without basic equipment needed. Nonetheless, I had an extension cord that I loaned him (and which has now disappeared along with him). After working for about an hour, Alex left for the rest of the day. The next day, again, he showed up a few hours late. He claimed that he was not feeling well the day before. I tried to be understanding, but I reminded him that I had a big outside party at my house the coming weekend on Sunday and really wanted to make sure that the job was nicely done. His original estimate was to be finished on Wednesday. Despite his mere one hour of work on Monday and his late arrival again on Tuesday, he claimed again that the work would be completed on Wednesday. Then, after a few hours of work on Tuesday, Alex left. I called him after I saw him pulling away, and he claimed that he had to go pick-​up his ten year old son but he would be back first thing the next morning and work all day. Again, late showing on Wednesday, was Alex, but this time not alone but with a couple of workers who he claimed worked for his company. [Later, I learned from the leader of these two workers that he had his own painting company and he gave me his own card, Victor’s Painting — thus it seemed that Alex was not following through on his job and was subcontracting it to someone else.] After bringing Victor and his associate and walking them around, Alex disappeared again, this time claiming that his wife was sick. Nonetheless, Victor and his associate continued where Alex had left off. None of them, though, Alex, Victor, or Victor’s other associate seemed to pay attention to detail and be neat about their work, (e.g., there was no masking done along edges), and this was a far bigger problem than the not showing, late showing, disappearing for hours, or even breaking the water hoses.
The job was not completed on Wednesday or on Thursday or on Friday. Then, on Saturday, seeming to be a way to try pressure me knowing that I had a big party with dozens of guests here on Sunday, Victor arrived and told me that he needed to be paid. I told him that, as per my contract with Alex, I would pay the balance upon completion. He indicated that Alex had not paid him or his associate. I explained to him that he needed to take that up with Alex. At that point, Victor left on Saturday with the job still incomplete.
The major problem now is that the job has still not been completed, and Alex came yesterday afternoon ranting that I should have paid Victor on Saturday and demanding additional payment beyond the contracted amount to finish the job. According to the contract, which was decided upon and written by Alex, I was to pay $ 225 to start the job and $ 275 upon completion. The job has yet to be completed. This afternoon, I took countless pictures to show the problems that remain. Alex broke the framework of one of the windows which he had painted shut and struggled to then open. There are little areas where the paint is too thin or not yet done. There are paint drips in certain areas that were painted. The biggest problem, though, is that the job was done without attention to detail — paint was dripped on the driveway, brick, stone, stucco, door knobs, windows, lights, wires, hose box, ladder, etc. The job is not done until they clean up after themselves. Alex tried to demand that I pay him more because it took longer than he planned, but the estimate was his. He also demanded that I pay him before he finishes which also contradicts his own contract. When I cited his own contract to him, he ranted and raved and stormed off in anger. Utterly unprofessional in many ways :(

We had some roof damage during big wind– and rainstorms in March 2011, which in led to some leakage, which caused some drywall damage in the house. Luckily, our homeowners insurance paid us close to $ 2000 (their estimate was almost $ 3000, minus a $ 1000 deductible), so we had some money to work with.
I made estimate appointments with 3 home-​repair/​handyman listings I found here on Unilocal,hoping to find someone who could do both the roofing and drywall/​painting work. One never showed up at all; one showed up late, did a very cursory inspection of the roof (using my ladder to get up there!) and then didn’t call me back with an estimate — and he would only have been able to do the roofing anyway.
What a difference between them and A. Reid and Sons! Alex Reid, one of the sons in A. Reid and Sons, showed up exactly when he promised, did a thorough inspection of the roof (using his own ladder) and of the inside, laid out exactly what he proposed to do inside and out, and gave me separate, precise written estimates for both parts of the work. Alex did the roofing work himself, again showing up exactly when he said he would; he and a 2-​man crew came about a week later to do the drywall and painting work. All the work was perfect, and the crew cleaned up the house so it looked as if they had never been here. The price (with a 5% senior discount, since I have this gray hair) was a very reasonable $ 1320 altogether — $ 570 for the roofing, $ 750 for the painting — so I have some insurance money left over. They give a 3-​year warranty, and having met Alex I have no doubt at all that if any problems come up, they will be out here to fix things to my satisfaction.
Alex tells me that A. Reid & Sons does almost all kinds of repair work — no electrical, no plumbing (and that’s fine, because I would want licensed folks for those trades). I am completely happy with their work, with their promptness, with their attitude, with their prices, with everything they have done, and I would not hesitate to call them for any kind of repair I might need. I feel lucky to have found them.

A. Reid & Sons saved me from potential months of stress. the last rains we had in the valley had me and my husband scrambling for some kind of solution to stop a leak that found its way smack dab to our front door entryway. our sorry attempt to tarp the roof had an angel knock on our door about a week later… his name was Alex.
I had already put off roof work from a previous leak years before from another area of my roof. Alex went up on the roof and gave me a better quote from the one i had previously gotten a few years before from another contractor for the same work and then some.
Alex cleared our rain gutters that were overflowing with leaves and pine needles, replaced our ridge caps that were basically gone, replaced some rotted wood, tarred up the many areas that needed it, and assured us that the roof would leak no more. we were comforted in the fact that A. Reid & Sons guarantee their work.
my husband and i were extremely satisfied with the work Alex did and loved that he explained everything and answered each and every one of our questions no matter how small or silly they might have seemed. Alex also does chimney work and we plan on having him do more work for us on our chimney as well. very professional, genuine, and competitively priced. we will definitely be using A. Reid & Sons for any future roof and chimney needs.
