History

Established in 1971.

Lion Square Lodge was initiated by a group of developers commencing in 1971. Four phases built over a three-​year period (1971 – 1974). 1970’s few lodges in the area. Lion Square has always enjoyed a wonderful location next to the Vail Ski Mountain. Mid 1990’s, the gondola was relocated closer to Lion Square Lodge presenting an even better ski-​in/​ski-​out experience. Lion Square did not own the land that the pool sits on instead had a long term lease set to expire in 2013. Vail Resorts & the 3 Lion Square Associations worked through a series of land trades to benefit both parties. This agreement included the pool, green space & North Building redevelopment project with upgrades to Phase I, II/​III. Lion Square was one of the first condo projects to have meeting rooms. 2008 – 2010 Lion Square underwent a complete renovation of the North Building interior & exterior. 27 condos were completely renovated & expanded, a fitness room, hot tub area & 9 new Tower Residences were added.

Great location — steps from Lionshead gondola. Free DVD rentals on the base level makes for happy children. Good mexican restaurant on site for days when you’re too tired to go out. Nice hot tubs outside. Great staff as well. We had one minor issue that they took care of immediately and went above and beyond. Highly recommend.

I’m happy with our stay. First time in Vail and it was in walking distance of multiple places. Really enjoyed the sauna and hot tubs. They had the pool open too. We found a“red box” type movie rental on the first floor where it have you free rentals of new releases! Free WiFi and comfy robes. Highly recommend.

Things I like: I have been staying here since 2011 and this place gets 4 stars purely because of the location and the fact that they offer free trips to the grocery store. All the rooms have microwaves and refrigerators, and as someone with a special diet, it’s so nice to be able to go to the store and stock up without having to worry about renting a car. This place is literally right outside of the gondola, so it’s wonderful not to have to schlep your skis all over the place. The rooms are nice, the views are gorgeous, and there is free wifi (which was surprisingly fast). They partner with Charter Sports who have always provided me with amazing service. The valets, bell hops, and drivers, are all really nice, enthusiastic, hardworking guys; they have always gone out of their way to provide me with excellent service and treated me with great kindness.
Things I don’t like: That said, I have to admit, I’ve never been crazy about the staff at the front desk or the concierge. While they are ok, they just don’t seem very genuine and make mistakes every once in a while. Furthermore, when there have been problems caused on the hotel’s end, the front desk doesn’t always make the effort to rectify it; the valets on the other hand, always volunteer to correct the hotel errors (note: not the manager). Lastly, this was an exceptionally warm spring, and the room was pretty warm (they do not have A/​C or fans). I had to leave the patio door open for a few hours so my room could cool down. I didn’t find this to be much of a problem, but I’m not sure how people deal with it in the summer.
The location and convenience make it worthwhile for me year after year. They do have a nice pool, jacuzzis, and sauna as well. There are often deals floating around online offering 20−25% off. If you don’t find one, call to reserve and ask them — I have never not been given the «discount».

It was a beautiful lodge with amazing views, however the customer service was absolutely horrible. The people at the desk were rude and with held information to make our stay better. They didn’t give us a map when we asked for directions, just said «up that way». I don’t think I’d come back here and say in the lodge.

I realize that they use this Vail place for skiing and such in the winter, but I can’t fathom how the summer is the «off-​season» here. It is absolutely gorgeous on this mountain in the summertime.
Oh, and Lion Square Lodge is an excellent place to stay. Rooms are a bit more affordable in the summer, and they are all clean and comfortable with a little bit of character. There’s a beautiful pool with a corresponding hot tub, and both have the mountain/​gondola backdrop.
Sure, the phone in our room didn’t work, but I carry one in my pocket so life went on without a hitch.

Being originally from the East coast, I didn’t think there was such thing as a hotel without AC, especially a nice hotel. Here’s the thing, I don’t really give a crap where the hotel is, just give me the option. I hear all of the time that you,“don’t need ac in Colorado, or you really don’t need it in the mountains.” Bull Crap! And if you don’t have ac, at least install ceiling fans appropriately. And here’s a novel idea, if you can’t supply ceiling fans, provide some decent floor fans.
The hotel/​condo is average. It reminded me of a normal hotel room, nothing special. There was nothing «vacation-​like» about the room itself. We were place in a different unit upon check in because we were told there was a refrigerator leak in our original room.
The staff were especially polite and always asking if we needed assistance. Very nice folks.
The balcony was the nicest part of the room, providing a view to the mountains and the gondola ride. Other than that, I can’t say much more about the room. There is nothing to brag about.
The location is awesome. It sits in the middle of everything, walk to shops and restaurants, and the gondola is only a few steps out the back door. Or if you want, you can take a free bus ride to nearby towns.
Would I stay here again? Probably not, unless it were free. There are better options I feel, depending on your budget.

Great location. Employees were helpful and friendly. Check the weather in Vail if you are traveling there in summer. No AIr Conditioning! No ceiling fans! So if Vail is 85 degrees… Your room is 90. Pool is awesome and relaxing. Construction was not an issue as far as noise is concerned.

Having never been to Vail before my friend and I spent lots of time trying to pick a good spot to stay. We chose wisely! The Lion Square Lodge was fantastic for many reasons. It’s literally 50 feet from the gondola that gets you up the Front Face ski area. The staff was really helpful for newbies like us and suggested solid restaurants and cool activities like snowmobiling — which they arranged. There’s also a ski rental place in the hotel with a friendly crew and the outdoor hot tubs here have an amazing location with the mountain right in front of you.
While the rooms facing the mountain are lovely, we opted to take the town view as we were on the mountain all day and were only in the room to sleep — saved big $ with that choice. The town area is great with lots of upscale stores and there’s a bus to the original Vail town area every 10 minutes — it’s a 5 minute bus ride and easy as can be. Hope to get back here in the summer!

Stayed here this summer. Very clean and well-​kept rooms and premises. Was disappointed that the fine-​dining restaurant on site was closed during the summer, but what else did I expect during the off season? This lodge features a good sized pool and 2 hot tubs. The front desk staff was very friendly.
Would definitely try to book a room here for my next visit to Vail… so should you!
