Scheu Family YMCA

Been a member for a while and I love how easy it is to work out since its never over crowded. Unfortunately the facilities are poorly taken care of. Always dirty, weights all over the place and if equipment breaks down, its removed and never fixed or replaced.
Basketball court’s floor has never been taken care of so the floor is slippery and you can easily slide. I’m surprised no one has slipped and fallen yet. One of the rims broke and they refuses to fix it, cancelling practice for kids teams. It was only fixed when a member fixed it for them for free.
The water fountain was broken for over a month and staff doesn’t really do much other than it behind the counter chatting.
Really sad to see the gym in such bad shape and will probably move to a different gym with all the basketball people since its been «getting taken care of» for far too long. You expect more from a gym costing much more than others.

Beward of your membership fees! At the time of sign up I was told that my membership was a 1yr contract. I asked the person helping me with the sign up if I needed to cancel at the end of the year and he said, «no». The guy told me that I had to renew my membership. I figured all was well and that if anything I was only contractually obligated to 1yr of fees. Well I have switched banks and only kept the other account open for the few auto-​pays I had going on. 2 days ago I checked my account only to find out that YMCA didn’t stop taking payments upon my 12^th month. That in fact it has been 4 months since my contract ended and they continued to take my money. I called the YMCA and was directed to leave a message. I did and 2 days later I still hadn’t heard from anyone. So today I called them again. A girl answered the phone so I decided to ask questions as if I would be a new member. The girl I spoke to told me the same as the person that signed me up. She said that I had to renew my membership after 1yr. I then explained my situation and she directed me to leave another message. I did but questioned when I would receive a call since I had already left a message 2 days ago. She assured me that her boss would call me back very soon. Well in like 5 mins the girl called me back and told me that her boss said that I had to go into the facility to cancel in writing if I wanted to cancel. So I am out $ 244 and the boss wouldn’t even return my call and worse I was told my contract would cancel automatically and I now have to go in person to make a request in writing to cancel. BEWARE!!! DO NOT BELIEVE THE «CONTRACT» WILL CANCEL AUTOMATICALLY EVEN THOUGH THAT IS WHAT THEY WILL TELL YOU. OH AND BTW, THE GIRL TOLD ME THAT YOU CAN CANCEL ANYTIME THAT YOU ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO STAY FOR THE YEAR. HAD I BEEN TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE CANCELLED ALMOST A YEAR AGO SINCE THE ONLY REASON I SIGNED WAS SO THAT MY KIDS COULD GO TO CAMP AT A DISCOUNTED RATE WHICH WASN’T REALLY MUCH OF A DISCOUNT BUT I FIGURED MY KIDS COULD USE THE FACILITY DURING THE SUMMER.

I have had the pleasure of having my son in (3 – 5 age group) soccer for a couple of sessions now and would like to acknowledge coach Erika and coach Audrianna for all the hard work and dedication,
My family will continue to participate in soccer due to these lovely ladies.

Update– without going into detail, I did receive an email from one of my son’s teachers not long after leaving this review, and based off the information I was provided in that email I have decided to change my rating for them. They are not money-​hungry and nosey as I had been lead to believe.

I’ve had a 5/​6yr old in the soccer league on Saturdays. The appeal is it’s practice followed by a game for a total of an hour. However, parents have to volunteer to coach, the director shows up late, and today our league showed up and it was «off» for spring break. We went on the field with the kids regardless since we were all there.
It’s not run well or organized. It’s expensive ($ 100) for having to coach yourself. Try the Upland indoor on 11^th for a richer experience.

This place ia sooo lame.
I have beeen trying to get a hold of them. through calling for past 2 weeks and seriously i have beeen calling everyday every 3 hours but they wont pick up the phone for any reason. This place needs to shut down. No cusromer service.

I love the Scheu Family YMCA Preschool. My daughter Adelina attended from 2008 – 2010 and my son John has been attending since 2013. I enjoy dropping him off and seeing how happy he is to go there. Mrs. Laurie, Mrs. Jonnie, Mrs. Olivia, & Mrs. Veronica are all amazing! My son always has nothing but good things to say about them. He has learned so much and I am truly happy with him there. There is no greater feeling than knowing your loved ones are being well taken care of while you are working. Thank you to all Preschool staff, you are greatly appreciated!

My daughter attended soccer camp at this YMCA location and there was an incident. My daughter was reaching to get a soccerball and a pole fell and hit her below her eye; 4 mm away from her eye. I broached the manager with my concerns regarding my daughter’s accident and the location of the pole. The manager showed no concern and didn’t care about my daughter’s accident stating «The kids shouldn’t be on the field without supervision.» I was very disappointed because the YMCA has a long standing with all the communities and this lady showed no compassion for the well-​being and safety of the my daughter. After soccer camp has concluded, we will no longer attend this YMCA location.

My son went here for 2 years and we had a wonderful experience with the preschool. I saw him grow and develop quickly due to the love and the care here. Ms. Olivia and Ms. Johnny treated my son like their own grandson. He still talks about them and he is a big kindergartner. I have recommended the school to my friends, and can’t say enough good things about it.

Kinda disappointed couldn’t speak with The «Program Director» left my #, hope I get a call.

I always had the wrong impression of a YMCA. I always assumed it was just a after school facility for children, but after a friend shared with me about the Upland YMCA & all that it offers I had to see for my self… Now for $ 59 a month my family of 7 can enjoy this large clean facility with a mini gym, tons of fitness classes, volleyball, basketball, soccer and child care with TV throughout. .Got my application and I’m signing us up! Zumba here I come!

Great place to workout in sometimes it’s loaded with kids but HEY it’s the Y!

We took our daughter to the Early Child Development Center for preschool. The cost was fairly inexpensive for a preschool. But you certainly get what you pay for… and not in a good way! There always seemed to be too many kids for the amount of staff. As far as how much learning they did, I’m not sure. I never got a report on what they did in school. In fact, this «preschool» seemed more like a daycare than a school. Our daughter, who is normally an outgoing child and easily adaptable, would cry every day she had to go to school there. She told us a couple of times that the teachers would yell at them. And then we witnessed it for ourselves when picking up our daughter. One day when I went to pick up my daughter from school, not one staff member acknowledged me. I don’t think they even saw that I left with my daughter from the school. That was very concerning. These are 2, 3, 4 and 5 year olds kids they’re taking care of. It made feel very uncomfortable about the safety of my child on the days she went to school. Needless to say we pulled her out real fast! I would not recommend this preschool for anyone.

I really like this gym. It’s nice and quiet. The employees are friendly and it is very family friendly.

On Tuesday, I had started to workout around 5:45 and had finished my workout at 8:30. Just recently, in order to ty out the gym I have been coming to this place for about two weeks. I am not a fan of gyms because I think there’s way too many people, though I gave this place a try because there is a lot less people in the mornign and the turf field is amazing. Now, I am not a member of this YMCA so i was interesting in becoming one because of earlier. That being said I will not join this YMCA because of the rudeness of the personal trainer for the gym. Now, since I don’t go to gym I am not familiar with rules. I changed after my workout but took my shirt off as it was pretty drenched from the constant running I did. As I step out of the gym facility and into the benches to watch my cousin practice, I sit down and this man yells at me three times to ”put my shirt on”. In all fairness I could not hear him well because of the countles girls inside the turf field.
Eventually, I understood what he was saying and put my shirt on. Yet, moments later he calls me over like a little boy and we go to the desk counter. He tells the receptionist that I have a final warning, and I have only been there two times. What baffled me most was that this man was just yelling and did not give me a chance to explain myself. I honestly think management should talk to this guy and calm him down. I understand he may not know me and i know he is nice to customers he knows, but that doesn’t give him the right to act like a jerk and scream his way to solve the problem and show his authority. If he had politely notified that it’s not allowed to have no shirt on then this review wouldn’t have been written. Normally, how employees act in places i don’t care as long as I am okay, though this time for once it is because of an employee’s disrepectful behavior that certainly I am not coming back to use the gym but just for the turf fields.

I became a member once I saw the inside of their facility and tried Adria’s spin class. I was hooked. I was impressed with how they converted the Gretzky hockey rink into a family oriented, fun, and friendly facility with great amenities.
I enjoy working out there as they offer a variety of classes to attend. Annette is a great zumba instructor who is full of energy and you will get your sweat on in her class. Adria teaches spin, kickboxing, yoga, and power pump. I have tried all of her classes and look forward to her classes each week (push, push, take out the bounce-​inside joke).
The staff is friendly, especially Chelsea/​Ramiro/​Coach Pete and Micah (not sure if I spelled that correctly).
My son has attended the teen summer camp 2 years in a row and had fun. Mr. Greene kept those teens busy!
As far as the food, I have not tried it but my son has and said it was good.
The reason I did not give 5 stars~~the pool has yet to be built and they keep teasing us with the slide show at the front desk :(.
I am thoroughly happy with them but wish they would use Twitter and Facebook more to make announcements instead relying on a piece of paper taped to the door.

I am reviewing the food that they serve. I am not a member but helped out at one of their events. After the event I ordered a burger that had Bacon, Avacado, Tomato, Lettuce, Cheddar Cheese, Onions and a special sauce. It was all put on some very delicious wheat bread that held all of those ingredients well. The chef was great and I heard they bring in special prep cooks to prep all their meats and other items. It came with fries and those were nothing special. If anyone thinks that they just serve cafeteria food you’re dead wrong. Skip Carl’s Jr. just once and you’ll be treated. The bathrooms and the facility is nice but I live in Highland otherwise I would join. Overall: B

I am only reviewing the childcare part of this YMCA. I am not a member but we used the summer daycare. I was very disappointed with the staff that is in charge of the childcare. It seemed like most of them did not want to be there. I only took my kids there twice a week. several times I went to pick them up and heard one of the ladies yelling at the kids. When she saw me walk in she changed her attitude and was overly sugary sweet. But my kids said she would yell at everyone all day. They also told me that they played «graveyard» several times a day. This game involved all the kids laying on the floor, and the first one who talked was out. So basically I paid these people to make my kids play the quiet game? After I heard all of this we did not return. It is very hard to find good, reliable childcare and it’s a shame that I could not find it here.

This is a great place to play indoor soccer or basketball, take a fitness class, work out on the machines, and grab a bite to eat. I also feel very safe working out here because they use thumbprint entry on the doors to the fitness rooms and the restrooms. I am looking orward to swimming in the pool when the construction in finished!

True to the name this is a «Family» gym. It’s perfect if you are a soccer mom or family with kids. There is an indoor soccer field and a «Raging Waters» type slide pool (to use their words) which was not open as of 1÷29÷11. If you aren’t a soccer mom or family, you probably won’t like it here.
I myself was underwhelmed by the offerings at this particular YMCA. I’m a 32 yr old male who is a member of the YMCA in Hollywood. I guess I’m a little spoiled because I’m used to having two different weight rooms that are in different parts of the building, an insane variety of equipment to work on, racquetball courts, yoga studios, etc. The Scheu Family YMCA had about 15 Ellipticals, 15 treadmills, 2 racks of weights, and maybe 5 or so random workout machines for back, shoulders, legs, etc.
The entire workout space is open, which is something I dislike. They pipe music throughout the space which I also dislike — I like listening to my own music. In addition, all of the lighting is fluorescent which I dislike — it’s harsh and office-​like.
I visited on 1÷29÷11 and most of the amenities had yet to be setup — to their credit they just opened on 1÷15÷11 and they said that most of the classes should be active in a week. The pool was not open yet, nor was the basketball court. I was assured these would also be open in a week. They did not have any stretching mats when I asked. Some of the weights had not been racked because there were no racks. It felt a bit like a soft opening and I imagine that soon this will all be cleaned up and resolved.
If you rely on weights and machines for the bulk of your workout, this isn’t the place for you. You’d be better off going to LA Fitness on Campus which offers much more equipment for the same membership price.
BUT, if you are a mom or dad with a family interested in a moderate workout while watching your kids play soccer or playing in the pool, then you will definitely appreciate this facility. I imagine this will also appeal to many seniors who don’t like the hustle and bustle of a bigger gym.
