Bud’s Sporting Goods & Fountain

Pretty good ice cream. Decent service. Sticky tables. I only came here because my friend had a coupon for buy one get one free, so it was super cheap. Would I go back? Sure. Would I go out of my way to go here? Probably not. It was pretty noisy inside too.

My family totally digs this place. They have ice cream sodas & sundaes & their coconut ice cream has tons of coconut in it! I always buy a dozen cookies when I go which is why I’m knocking it down a star– the cookies look waaaaay better than they taste. I keep buying them hoping this time will be better.

Kind of «small town cute» but also tired and dirty. Can’t see the icecream, have to order off the board. I guess a monopoly on a hot day keeps the cash flowing. Icecream not wonderful, overly sweet and artificial in flavor.

Stopped in after lunch and I was tripping out on this place because it’s a ice cream parlor and in the back it’s a small sporting goods store!
The macadamia nut ice cream on a sugar cone was large and reasonable at just $ 2.75 although the peanut butter cookie was just average. As I was enjoying my ice cream at the booth I noticed the sporting goods counter and saw sports Jerseys, fly fishing accessories and look what was behind the counter:

You can tell this place has been around for decades by looking at the equipment behind the ice cream counter, it was like going back in time but was so fascinating.
Besides getting yummy ice cream they offer banana splits and soda floats too. I’ll definitely return here next time I visit Truckee.

I worked at Bud’s the summer of 1978 when I was 17. We loved making ice cream sodas one minute, and dumping out a container of nightcrawlers for a fisherman the next! It was a kick-​ass first job!

this place needs to decide what it wants to be. At the forefront, they are this 50’sesque diner with creamy and delicous Bud’s ice cream. Milk shakes, malts, sundaes, splits, you name it they have it, and it all tastes out of control fresh and amazing.
at the middle they have a display for tackle (fishing) and at the back (guns). Weird. Whatever, if i’m visiting during the summer, i’m coming for a cookie dough waffle cone.

Do you need a fishing license and an Ice Cream sundae? I sure do! I came to this unique set up when I was about 9 years old and I still can’t get over it. Truckee is a very special town and this place only adds to it’s charm. The soda fountain itself is pretty mean. Totally check this place out!
