We specialize in hardware, Plumbing Supplies, Electrical Supplies, Benjamin Moore Paint, Fireplaces and Wood Burning Stoves. Hechlers cut and thread steel pipe, do custom sheet metal work, sharpen knives, scissors and chainsaw chains, rent carpet cleaners, cut keys and have a great gift section for the ladies. Visit our old Victorian 19th century Hardware Store in Downtown Troy Missouri, located across the street from our other store, Hechler’s Mainstreet Hearth & Home. We have been know by various names over the years, RJ Hechler Hardware and the common mispelling, Heckler Hardware.
History
Established in 1896.
On March 4, 1896, Julius John Jacob Hechler opened the doors of his hardware store for its first day of business at 530 Main Street in Troy, Missouri. He was proud of his new hardware store with it fancy Mesker Brothers Cast Iron and Pressed Sheet Metal Architectural Front. No doubt, the town of Troy was busy as usual. The livery companies were taking their passengers to and from the train depot on Front Street. Leonard Henry, Julius’ brother-in-law, was preparing his Opera House across the street for the «Komedy Kompany» that was to arrive on the afternoon train for the evening’s entertainment. The hotels were probably going to be full that night. The air was filled with the music of iron answering to iron from the blacksmith shops nearby. George Kempf, Julius’ other brother-in-law, would soon be loading his wagon with groceries for the first delivery of the day.
This is a snapshot of an earlier time in Troy Missouri. Today Hechler Hardware is still a bustling place of business.
