History

Established in 1970.

Sherwood «Shakey» Johnson loved ragtime music. He dreamed about having a place where his family and friends could get together, share some pizza and beer while listening — and often singing along — to favorite ragtime standards. So back in 1954 he scraped together his savings and opened the first Shakey’s Pizza Parlor & Ye Public House® at the corner of 57th and J Street in Sacramento CA. People came from all over to enjoy the original thin crust pizza, ice cold beer on tap and most of all, the fun, family friendly atmosphere.

While times have changed, Shakey Johnson’s dream is still alive and well today at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor®. For generations people have been coming to Shakey’s® to share good food and good times with family and friends. Shakey’s® is an American classic. We’ve perfected the art of uniting family and friends around a meal — something of a lost art in this fast paced, time-​starved world.

I have been coming to this Shakys since before I was even born. My mom used to come to Shakey’s every friday, while she was pregnant for me about 20 years ago. When I turned ten my dad ended up buying the restaurant. I’ve been coming here to help my dad since I turned 16. Nothing has changed with the food, but my favorite iteam on the menu will always and forever be mojo patatoos. Since I been here the only thing that has changed is our game room i love it I picked out half the games myself and I love each one dearly and I’ve mastered them all. If you and your family wanna have a good time come to Shakey’s. there no doubt about how much you’ll love our restaurant.

This place does not even deserve a star because the employees are really rude. I have been coming to this same location for years and I have to say that it has changed dramatically. This is a privately owned franchise that does care about hiring good employees, so I will no longer go here.

Great relaxing place to eat and drink and for parties. But… If you buy beer, they fail. Two different times I bought a pitcher of beer 6 months apart, and each time she poured into the pitcher, half of the pitcher foamed up and she had to scoop out all that extra foam and kept pouring trying to fill it. So either their air lines were off, or the lines are dirty… Get it together Shakeys! Food is great.

This places says they close at 10PM when I looked up. Got here just now 3÷20÷16 @ 930 & they locked the door! When a customer left and opened the door for me to get in I asked the lady at the register if they were closed she said yes. I told her your website says you close at 10PM she said yeah but we lock the door at 930 and rolled her eyes seemed inconvenienced.
Ridiculous and completely unacceptable. Shame on you shakeys! Shakeys definitely lost my business after tonight.

It was somewhat of a busy Sunday afternoon but not enough to where seats weren’t available. We ordered our pizza, chicken and mojos and it took FOREVER to come out and even when it was ready they didn’t call us over the speaker to pick it up — it was a good thing we were waiting at the window. We also ordered the salad bar and there was nothing there to get at — the fact we had to ask someone to restock. The had no plates, only paper and didn’t even have ice in their machine — when we asked for it all they said was you’re going to have to wait a bit for it. UM excuse me?! the tone was just wrong. I know times get busy and stuff happens — i just don’t think attitudes are necessary.

Went on 3⁄6 with my group… and i have to say this place has become a TOTAL dump. Pizza was bland, mojos were overcooked, soda machine didn’t even work properly. We had to get ice from a bucket next to the machine. Every table on here was REALLY dirty. I had to get a rag and clean our tables myself! I will not come back until this location gets a COMPLETE makeover.

Wow, where to start… Well first of all as soon as you walk in, the smell of stale grease and fried food blasts you in the face. That should have been the warning not to go any further, but hubby wanted to try their pizza and I figured we’re already here. Once we figured out how their ordering system and pick up system worked out, we let the kids go to the «play area». I wouldn’t really call this a play area. It’s more like a few broken down arcade games that eat your money and scam you out of your hard earnings. So once we got our food, we dug in. After a few bites I actually started to feel nauseous. The pizza was absolutely tasteless! Nothing at all! The chicken was overly salty (so I knew my taste buds were working) but the only thing I could choke down was the mojos.
OMG, the customer service is horrid. I know this is only a pizza joint, but come on, when I ask what the ingredients are for the chicken if there’s allergens, the answer should not be, «I don’t know, it comes in a big plastic bag». I also mentioned to one of the workers that one of the games ate $ 2 worth of tokens and she should put a sign on it that it’s out of order, she just said ok and walked away. This place is so depressing and awful I have no idea how it’s still around.

I had a hankering for fried chicken this afternoon and remembered that they had fried chicken here so my boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. Upon arriving I noticed they had the all you can eat Bunch O’ Lunch buffet for $ 8.99, I got really excited. My boyfriend wished it included drinks but I didn’t really care. I was so ready to grub!
With any buffet, you have to expect the quality to be a little lower since most of it is just kept under heat lamps, but even so I thought the food was great! They had maybe 4 different types of pizza, bread sticks, pasta, corn, mashed potatoes, MOJOS, fried chicken, and the salad bar. Highlights:
Pizza– I’m not really into pizza but my boyfriend said that it was pretty good. They had cheese, pepperoni, sausage with pepperoni, and a vegetable pizza.
Potatoes– Mojo’s are always a delight, however I feel they weren’t as good as I remembered. I hadn’t been here in maybe 8 years and I was excited for these but was a little let down. BUT DANG THE MASHED POTATOES AND GRAVY WAS SO BOMB! I was really surprised and I went back for more.
Fried Chicken– WOW. So good. Seriously if you have a craving for fried chicken don’t even bother going to KFC. It is so good here and tastes so fresh. Very impressed.
Overall, I was delightfully surprised. As for all the reviews about the poor customer service– I can see what they mean. They are very short and will only say what’s necessary. Since it wasn’t table service, it didn’t really matter to me.
I give 4 stars for the clean up process. There were 2 – 3 tables with abandoned plates and trays. My boyfriend and I wanted to return our plates and trays to the trash bins, but there were so many cups and plates stacked on top we couldn’t. So we just left them on the table. It’s a little bit of an eye sore and I wish they kept it more tidy.
$ 24 for a young couple all you can eat meal with sodas? Worth it. Give it a try!

First of all when I get here it wasn’t crowded, I was glad because my family was very hungry and thought our food was going to be ready fast. Wrong!!! It took 40 min and my family is a family of 3. When the girl called our number we didn’t get any plates. So I asked if I can have some plates she rudely said «yes hold on» really is that how you talk to a customer? When she gives me my plates I look at her like «really paper plates» I saw other families with the restaurant plates and this rude ass person gives me paper plates. I would never come to this shakeys ever again.

Went for the lunch buffet which was not even completely set up at opening time at 11 AM. Pizza was like pizza sauce on cardboard. Still trying to figure out how they got lumps in canned or jarred gravy. The fried chicken was the star! I’d go back for the fried chicken in a heartbeat, but nothing else. The chicken was the only reason I gave two stars.
Hadn’t been to Shakey’s since Houston in the 70’s and they were terrific back then. WHAT HAPPENED!!!

Been coming here for years. Almost seems every time I come back the food just keeps getting more and more bland. Almost like the workers there just gave up. I mean its lunch buffet, but that quality of a Shakeys pizza is just not there anymore. Or maybe its purposely set up that way to have buffe time pizza not as good? weird… BTW, this might the lowest rating I have given to any food…

Let me start by saying I LOVE Shakey’s pizza BUT this location’s pizza seems to be lacking in the amount of toppings, flavor and the «deliciousness» of the Shakey’s Special. I called in my order for a pound of Mojo’s and a Shakey’s special (almost $ 30) and when I got it home I noticed the toppings were sparse and the Mojo’s were not like the flavorful potatoes I remember but like potato chips! Way overcooked! The crust on the pizza was soggy and soft like that of a frozen brand at the supermarket. Mind you, I’ve been going to Shakey’s since the early 80’s and this was not how I remember my pizza and Mojo’s to be. I would have been better off going to get a $ 10 pizza at COSTCO! I would hate to drive all the way to the Carson Shakey’s to get my fix so Torrance… get it together!!!

I was trying to call in an order for pick up but changed my mind after the employee was super rude. I had asked if they had any specials or family combos. The lady straight out shouted no with an attitude. She then paused and by that time my mood had totally changed. I told her thank you and she hung up. Totally ruined my day!

They get 2 stars because the food was good (also, it wasn’t really busy) but they lost three stars because I couldn’t believe how dirty this place was! The windows were greasy, trash EVERYWHERE including under the tables, on the booths, behind counters. The employees need to definitely get to cleaning since they were hanging out. «If you got time to lean, you have time to clean». The shakers need to be filled up, the ketchup bottles were all empty. I had to go around the restaurant and pick up 5 ketchup bottles to use the last drops out of them. So overall, the food was good but employees are extremely lazy.

Came on a Thursday around 7:30pm. Not very crowded. First thing I noticed was the heat. There are fans but no AC, feels like the heat is on. It a nice summer evening they should cool it down inside. Ordered a small shakeys special pizza with sausage, pepperoni, hamburger, mushrooms & olives. It was crispy thin crust & Very tasty. Ordered 4 piece fried chicken with mojo potatoes. They were not oily & very crispy & pretty tasty also! More than I expected. Got to watch the Dodger game! Good times!

Gross alert… I was with a group of friends and we were figuring out what to order and that’s when I saw a man, possibly the owner, spray the beer taps and ice shovel with raid. At first I thought maybe it had to be Lysol or something less poisonous but then the smell filled the room. It’s a weird feeling when something so absolutely wrong happens right in front of patrons and no one else notices. I will not be using my free personal pan coupon we received from the school. Who knows what he was trying to kill. If you have raid read the can it says to change your clothing after using since it’s that bad for your health.

Went here for lunch because we had a coupon for free pizza but they wouldn’t let us use it because the coupon said after 2 PM and it was 130 so we didn’t get to use the coupon that was a bummer but the pizza overall was pretty good and the little play area with video games the kids like to play. the place itself is pretty nice it was a little hot in there like they didn’t turn on the air conditioner so that was kind of a bummer but the food was decent came out pretty fast and and they kept the place pretty clean the staff was nice They also had a bunch of TVs with sports playing so that was kind of cool i would go here again

Went again for yet another softball team party and again the place more than satisfied the youngsters. Some of the games were breaking down but they were super quick to refund the kids. We had a little bit of a hairy scary situation when we found a thick hair baked into the cheese of the pizza. I brought it to the attention of the employee and she shrugged, smiled and said «Sorry!» I wasn’t expecting anything free but at least the look that they are horrified that it happened could have gone a long way to convince me that this is a rare situation.
Their chicken was good as I’d hoped at least!

As someone who used to work at Shakey’s, I was extremely disappointed with my experience at this location.
I went with my cousins, and the four of us ordered small pizzas, and we got three small and one individual. When I ordered the Mojos Supreme the first time, the cashier didn’t catch it, so I had to order a second time.
Mojos Supreme come with cheese, bacon, olives, green onions, and sour cream, which were what I was hoping to get, but instead I received an extra large order of plain Mojos. When I went back to the register, the second cashier said that Mojos Supreme weren’t prepared that way for years.
I was disappointed, my experience was bull, and I’m not ever returning to the Torrance location.

I absolutely love this place. I used to go at least once a month.
I don’t care how worn down this place looks, it is amazing! It has a great family vibe but still sports bar like. It will remind you of any pizza place you went to growing up.
The crust is soft and ingredients seem fresh. Probably because the pizza comes out straight from the oven.
And those fried potato slices — MMMM delicious!
My family friend introduced me to this place because she loved it; especially those Mojo potatoes. She was right — they are divine. This place just makes me feel good. Good food and good vibes. Can’t go wrong!
