This is my local go-to deli for getting my fresh pastrami sandwich, kosher hard salami slices or fresh deli pickles(old and new pickles available of course!) It’s located next to a bakery so it makes it an easy stop to grab both of your Jewish favorites. The location is walking distance from Tarzana hospital and I always see a bunch of people coming here for a good honest meal without the pretentious atmosphere. I really wanted to LOVE their chicken soup and think it to be the best but it was just 3.5 out of 5 stars. I took an order of chicken rice soup and found the chicken pieces themselves to be tough and over cooked. The staff is always friendly and lovely to chit chat.

As a rule, most delis in this town don’t have a rep as go-to eat destinations. Many prices are too expensive and the food and service almost never matches the check. But this place is different. Best deli in the valley and maybe all of LA. Prompt courteous service and good food at mostly fairer prices. So much so, that you wish Morts would start a chain and spread to the east valley.

The sunny side up eggs were runnier then I like and the bacon was a bit overcooked for my taste and the breakfast potatoes were a little on the bland side but all in all a hearty and fine breakfast. Great service.

An excellent Jewish deli. It’s got a wide selection of meats, sleep inducing portions, and fast service. Their takeout orders take a few minutes — the beef tongue sand which or classic reuben are awesome! They’ll make fries well done for you if you ask.

Was craving a pastrami sandwich this morning. I came in around 11:30, before the major rush. I had a cup of chicken soup(mostly noodles, still tasty though) I also had the half pastrami sandwich. They do not skimp on the meat here, so half is plenty to fill you up, with a cup of soup. The meat is very tasty, lots of pepper and lean, the way I like it! Service was great! Everyone comes by to see if you need a drink refill, or anything else. I have only been here twice, but both times have been good.

Randomly walked in and was taken back in time to a place where everyone was genuinely pleasant and the food was reasonably priced and delicious. If I lived closer to this delicatessen I would be here regularly. Thank you Carlos for your delicious suggestion and meal!

I was very disappointed with my lunch and the 2 stars are for the pleasant waitress that waited on me. I ordered a Pastrami sandwich. The sandwich looked anemic as there was like 6 slivers of Pastrami on ½ of the sandwich. Then the thing was so salty it overpowered the taste of anything else! I didn’t eat the other half and I thought I’d bring it home for one of my three dogs. The hysterical thing was the neither one of the dogs would eat it either! So the moral of the story is that I paid $ 17 for an anemic Pastrami sandwich that wasn’t even good enough for a dog!

Mort’s has been visited by me on and off since 1981… I’ve enjoyed two owners and a pretty consistent menu and staff… The team is excellent and the food quality has been consistently good over the years… The waitresses, who have great senses of humor most days, have kept me entertained… They are really good folks!!! They have given me a «hard time» which I have gleefully returned to them… All in all, Mort’s Is a place you should call home!!! Maybe we’ll meet!!!

Travelling with a friend through LA craving New York Deli and Mort’s was recommended. I had a pastrami corned beef combo on rye. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Great pickles. If you are a lover of chopped liver, this is the place.

Great deli. Fast service great good. We drive from Northridge. The prices are great. If you’re looking for a good breakfast place, come to Morts. It beats the loud, crowded Brents anyway.

My husband and I love this place. The matzo ball soup is amazing. The carrots are so fresh and the matzo ball is delicious. It reminds of my mother in law’s recipe. Pastrami on rye is perfect. Just the right amount of fat! Omelets are so good. The Denver is awesome. The breads and bagels are as fresh as can be. We get the best service from Cody and Lalo. Can’t wait to go back.

It’s a relatively small 1980s-designed deli that serves very good food in house or to-go! Either way, pay at the to-go counter. Credit cards accepted! Has a TV. This places gets pretty busy at «early bird special time.» The best Matzoball Soup around. The Matzoball isn’t relatively easy to carve bites out of and the broth and noodle combo complements the Matzoball perfectly. The chunks of chicken in the broth tastes good, but I wish they’d cut it into smaller bites. Note: you can also get the soup without chicken. If you order many matzoballs to-go, it comes in two separate styrofoam containers: one for the broth/noodles/chicken and one for the matzoballs. Matzo Brei is very quality and all-around yum! Can order pancake-style or scrambled, and the waitress says the ordering is about 50 – 50. No added flavors… just egg and matza! It’s served with apple sauce and sour cream on the side, like latkes. Note: use the apples sauce as a side. The in-store menu is confusing on this, but it’s not served with potatoes. T A Bagel with Lox and Cream Cheese is really good here. They apply lots of cream cheese to the bagel, and the lox is very fresh and in thick slices. It’s also served with red onions, capers, and something else on the side(maybe a pickle), but I like mine pretty basic. French Fries: weren’t that good. And on my last visit, they were served lukewarm.

Decent for but a bit pricey. There are lots of other Delicatessens in the area that have better food. The waitress was an 81 year old firecracker! She was AWESOME!!! Five stars for our waitress Five stars for the fast seating 2 stars for the sandwich 1 star for the coleslaw 2 star for the price Next time I’ll go down the street to Jerry’s or Joseph’s

I have been going to morts since 1979, we moved out of the area after 20 years and we still drive specially to eat at morts, they by no means have the best corn beef, pastrami, in the entire San Fernando Valley, the service is great! The coffee keeps on flowing, the soups are all good, overall this is the best deli in town, they beat every deli, the omelettes are great too, you will love the place, location is great, by the way time stood still at Morts, the same staff for 30 years that tells you how good Morts is enjoy!

I had a delicious hot pastrami on rye yesterday — the day my son was born — with my father in law. This is a cute little deli that I’ve only just discovered. It’s not going to replace Langer’s for me, but I’d definitely stop in again next time I’m on the neighborhood. Friendly and yummy.

I called in an order to go… I should have known from the phone call. I had to repeatedly say«Hello» before the person on the other end finally responded. I placed a simple order for matzo ball soup, and a pastrami sandwich($ 30). When I got there to pick it up, I waited for the employees to finish their conversation… I was definitely interrupting! After getting home and having my soup(which was awesome) and a small portion of the sandwich, my husband pointed out it was TONGUE… not pastrami!!! EEEEEWWWWWW!!! I wondered why it tasted different, and was sick to my stomach for the net 24 hours just thinking about it!!! Needless to say I will be going to Uncle Bernie’s for my soup and sandwiches in the future, they can tell the difference between tongue and pastrami.

I wasn’t too impressed about this place. I went to here to eat after a quick visit at the hospital. I checked the reviews and pastrami looked good. Unfortunately the pastrami was horrible and bland Ive had way better at Brents and for the same price. If you want a sandwhich you are better off going to Gelsons market where inside they have an excellent kitchen. Not to mention the owner walked in with paint clothes and goes into the kitchen. Paints have chemicals and they shouldn’t be near food equipment. Wont be going again.

A low key Jewish deli in Tarzana. A bit hidden off to the side of Reseda and Ventura, right next door to Bea’s Bakery. I visited for the first time today. Service is great and experience is so much better than Jerry’s Deli. The bread on my brisket sandwich was really fresh. They had sweet spicy mustard available when I asked. Potato salad side was generous and really satisfying. I even enjoyed the chicken noodle soup. Service was extremely attentive. Most of the diners here, if not all, were seniors including the servers. Loved it!

For me, giving out Unilocal stars is all about expectations. Places that exceed expectations deserve recognition and those that underwhelm deserve recognition for that too. When it comes to delis, there are so many in LA that just don’t measure up. Being Jewish and raised in LA, memories of those weekend family brunches at the deli are treasured. Unfortunately the deli scene is LA is pretty dismal. Jerrys has pretty much ruined the scene with horrible food and high prices. Canters and Brent’s are still good but prices are high and a little tough to get to for me. So Morts deli is the last bastion of Jewish deli fare that measures up to the memories. The food is very authentic, priced fairly, and served with a smile by a friendly face. This place is like the Cheers of delis, come here often enough and they will remember your name and what you like to drink. Everything is home made and fresh. Deli meats are highest quality and fresh. Breakfast is perfect any time of day. The restaurant appears recently updated a little, everything looks nice and clean yet still retains that deli feel. Bea’s bakery, attached to Mort’s, is just amazing. They make everything there so if you need some pastries, a birthday cake, or just a few cookies on your way out there is NO Better bakery in Los Angeles. In the end it was the service that caused me to write this review. The waiters at Mort’s are old school, they know how to provide excellent service with a great attitude. Just try to finish your cup of coffee or your water, they are so attentive that you will be offered a refill before you need it. Your order will come out right and promptly just like you asked for. By the way, Mort’s has the best pickles in the world. I’m giving five stars for the service and if I could I would give a sixth star for the pickles. If you’ve never been to Mort’s you have to try it. If you haven’t been here in years, come back and they might still remember you. If you are expecting white tablecloths and a faux french host you will be disappointed. If you are expecting a solid deli with great food, service, and atmosphere, Mort’s will exceed your expectations!

You know those times when someone says something to you so rude and unprovoked that you are shocked into silence? And then you walk away and know exactly what you should have said? This review is what I wish I said during my encounter with Mort’s new owner Lana. It started when I called in a to-go order for my sick mother yesterday afternoon. I ordered two quarts of matzo ball soup with everything packed separately. From a practical perspective, the ingredients stay fresher when packed individually, especially if the intention is to enjoy the soup for several days. Since the restaurant admittedly does not combine all of the parts of the soup until serving, accommodating the request does not require a great deal of effort(granted, some, but not extraordinary). The deli regularly and easily filled this order for my mother for years when Mort was in charge. Also, Jerry’s and Brent’s will do it without batting an eye. It has never been a problem in the past. When the person on the phone took my order, she never mentioned anything about a no «everything on the side» policy. If she had, I would have gladly taken my business elsewhere to save Lana and myself the frustration of what happened when I picked up the soup. The board above the food case listed the price for a quart of soup at $ 11.50. $ 11.50×2 = $ 23 + tax = approx. $ 25. I was charged $ 30. I assumed the extra $ 5 was for the special packaging(though this was never confirmed). When I got to the register, Lana looked in my box and said it was a lot of containers. At first, I thought she was just making conversation. I replied, «It is a lot of containers, but my mom is sick and this is how she likes it.» But Lana continued, «we won’t do this for you again. It is too many containers.» Before I could respond, she said, «we get a lot of SPOILED people who ask for this.» My mother is ill, the kind that doesn’t get better. She is in a lot of pain and finding food that agrees with her is a challenge. On top of her preexisting condition, she recently caught a chest cold and has been unable to so much as stand for more than two minutes. The coughing is so forceful that she sometimes gags and vomits. Matzo ball soup is one of the few things that has a chance of staying down. Neither my mother nor I are«spoiled» for making a small, reasonable request about the packaging of an order, especially when I paid for the Styrofoam and inconvenience. If it was a problem for Lana to have her staff pack the order, she should have told me over the phone or politely noted that she would not pack separately in the future when I paid the bill. Instead, she complained to me about how difficult it is to strain carrots from broth. It is worth mentioning that Mort’s is located across the street from Providence Tarzana Hospital and several other medical buildings. The restaurant’s policy of not honoring special requests may be relevant to those wanting to bring a treat to their loved ones. By the way, the matzo balls were waterlogged and the soup was flavorless. Lana is running a deli, but it certainly isn’t Mort’s.
