History

Established in 2000.

In October 2000, Kyoko Hummel founded Essential Massage and Spa Therapies to be of service to locals and visitors to Taos. She created two signature treatments: Anti-Aging Eye Pampering and the Herbal Foot Wrap.

Using her training as a Natural Therapeutic Specialist, Kyoko combined Acupresure Face-lift with herbal remedies to improve the health of the eyes which tend to experience excessive screen time (computers etc), airborne pollutants and allergens.

In our Herbal Foot Wrap with massage, we cook four therapeutic herbs to soak our towels then wrap the feet in the healing properties.

In Spring 2014, two new treatment rooms and a handicap accessible bathroom were added to better serve more of the Taos community. Our regulars love the new lobby and healing space.

For over 14 years, our staff of Licensed Massage Therapists have offered professional therapeutic massage and spa therapies with a caring touch. We love what we do!

Kyoko H.

Business Owner

In 1991, Kyoko Hummel resigned from a corporate career to explore the healing arts. She moved to Albuquerque to enroll in the New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics. Upon graduation, she received NM License #072.

Kyoko taught prenatal and infant massage at two schools along with maintaining her professional massage practice. With a strong foundation in deep tissue and neuro-muscular massage, she also has a forte for Cranio-Sacral Therapy.

As proprietress of Essential Massage, Kyoko delights in working with her clients and colleagues to provide outstanding service and care.

My husband and I were in Taos for a wedding in December and decided to treat ourselves to massages. So glad we chose Essential Massage! Sabrina and Amelia were our therapists and we both loved our massages. Sabrina asked me about injuries, stress areas and the strength I wanted so she could tailor the massage appropriately. Amelia did the same for my husband. We both walked out of Essential Massage relaxed and smiling.

I love massage. Whenever I travel, on business our pleasure, I try a local place. Recently, I was in Taos for a wedding. I found Massage Essentials on Unilocal The ambience was Spartan. No accompanying hot tub or sauna. The massage provides used solid technique. The neck and scalp massage was the best part. The repeated mashing of my parotid glands was mildly unnerving. All in all it was a solid massage. Relaxing.

Seven of us recently visited Taos for a «Girls Weekend.» Five of us booked massages at the same time and ALL of us said that the massages we received at Essential Massage were, by far, the BEST we had EVER had anywhere. I had booked a 60-minute massage with Meredith and 15 minutes into it, I asked her if she had time to stretch it to a 90-minute massage. She quickly checked her schedule and said she could. Made my day! I’ve had lower-back pain my entire life and asked her to be careful in that area. Instead of avoiding that area as other therapists have done in the past, she was able to gently work out the knots. I highly recommend Essential Massage because their therapists are top-notch and they are very fairly priced.

I got an amazing river stones massage from Manuela. One of the best of my life — 2 hours and I wished it would go on for at least two more. She had a very quiet, respectful manner and kind, healing energy. I believe the name of the treatment was Triple Delight? It cost $ 195 and was totally worth it.

I was a massage novice when I was lucky enough to make a Sunday appointment with Ananda Kali at Essential Massage. Don’t be put off when you get the answering machine; one of the massage therapists/estheticians will get back to you in a very timely fashion. Ananda is an esthetician specialist, so I was able to get a brow waxing, but she also gave me the most amazing 1−½-hour deep-tissue massage & skin treatment. When she found out I had never had a professional massage, she was very thorough in explaining how the massage would be conducted & took great care to ensure that I understood that my communication to her about how my body was responding during all parts of the massage was very important. She was kind, caring, & professional. Ananda worked out muscle tension that I wasn’t aware radiated to so many areas of my body. She told me that deep breaths from time to time followed by relaxation of my body would help, although I also might have periods of drifting off. I didn’t think I would, but I was so comfortable & felt so safe that I actually did «drift off» with the warmth of the room (during a particularly cold weather spell), the soothing music, and of course, Ananda’s finely honed skills as a massage therapist. I have scent sensitivities & had no problem at all with any invasive odors. Everything looked, smelled, and felt clean & safe. I went back a week later to follow up on the amazing results Ananda achieved in relieving my neck/upper body pain & tension. Ananda worked on the residual muscle tension (which she had ameliorated so fantastically with the initial longer massage), & I felt better than I had in months! Ananda is just a delightful person, & I felt enriched by having crossed paths with her during my visit to Taos.

My wife Heather and I enjoyed an hour long couples massage at Essential Massage en route from our home in Aurora, CO to Chimayo, NM on Saturday.
Ananda and Aimee were amazing and did such a great job, we felt so relaxed afterwards and ready for the final leg of our road trip.
They were very understanding and accomodating that we were running a few minutes late too. I would definitely suggest incorporating the aromatherapy treatment too, it made a world of difference. I’m so glad that we chose Essential Massage, they truly performed a miracle in helping me with a painful tail-bone issue that I have, which was aggrevated by sitting in the car for such a long while. In fact, they did such a good job on it that it didn’t even cause me any bother driving all the way back home a couple of days later!
We would absolutely recommend a visit here for your massage, this was about one of the best I’ve ever had!

I just finished with a 90 minute massage and facial. Ananda Kali did both and it’s obvious that she’s a pro. She even asked how long I wanted to spend on each treatment. 45 minutes apiece was awesome. Ananda made sure I was comfortable with the amount of pressure throughout and she really worked out some knots I had.
If you’re in Taos this is a great little place. Prices were really good too — $ 140 for the package I bought. I also got to take advantage of the web special they were running so I had a wonderful refreshing eye treatment added for free.
When I come back I’ll definitely visit Essential Massage again! :)

Essential Massage is a great independently owned Day Spa in Taos. When my wife and I arrived to Taos we found that a massage was needed in short order. These therapist were outstanding. I called their phone number and received a message machine. I was called back in short order. A time was set for the same day!!! When we arrived to the Spa we were not at all disappointed. The therapist were so nice and friendly. They treated us like locals. My wife used Jacqui and said she was the best she has ever used, and trust me she is a spa regular. I used Ananda and she was very good! We did a couples massage in the same room and that was a bonus. This is a small, but super friendly spa, with top notch therapist. Each of our therapist had over ten years of experience. This is a must do for the weary traveler. I would easily go again!
