I wanted to try a butcher for good quality meats. What I got was bad salmon where the flesh was turning to mush, the ny strip steaks were old not fresh as well and turning brown and the chicken breast had a yellowish film on some of them. I ended up throwing away almost one hundred dollars worth of meat to include cube steak and pork chops. Don’t believe the great reviews on Unilocal, they may have written them or had friends write them to bring in customers. I guess I was a little too trusting by not looking at the meat before they wrapped it. STAYAWAYFROMTHISPLACE!!!

Walking in wasn’t really sure what to expect and found it was like a small old fashioned market quite interesting really. Random jars of sauces and seasonings, whole briskets and tenderloins for sale. The middle of the room has a large meat counter with everything from wings to hotdogs. The owner saw me looking around and offered assistance and we struck up a conversation. Wilkes has been open since 1930 gets it’s beef from the Mid West, is Prime feeds on grain and no funny stuff in their meat. The steaks can also be cut to order so if you are looking for that super thick Porterhouse to feed four it can be done. Not in the mood to cook but want«homemade, not canned» all kinds of sides made from scratch are in containers for you to «grab and go» as well as pulled pork sandwiches for just .99 cents. Scalloped potatoes and containers of Deviled eggs were some of the offerings and when asking what the beans and collards were seasoned with was told«pork» not sure about the blackeyed peas so you will have to ask. When the season permits tomatoes, shelled beans and peas will be for sale as will smoked turkey parts for those of us who like to season with it instead of Mr. pig. Lunch specials are offered and change daily from 11 – 1:30ish for just $ 4.99 baked chicken, pork loin or maybe even a steak burger(skip it super dry) may be a few off the options. On Fridays they offer a pot luck of regular items and add fried fish and a Steak special to the mix for $ 5 – 6.99(guess where I’ll be eating lunch soon). This is the perfect opportunity to try what they have to offer. The food is take out only but there are some white rocking chairs out front where you can have a seat and enjoy your lunch.

Big fan! Moved last year and really wanted to find a good meat market. Great ribeyes and the employees were very helpful. A nice touch was the local produce. I wasn’t expecting that.

Wilkes meat market is by far one of the best places to purchase! I can’t rave enough about the quality of the meats/foods and the prices are extremely reasonable. Run don’t walk to get the ribs. If you cook them right that are awesome.

This place is a jem among jems. It is small but they have almost anything you could possibly want when it comes to cooking meat or good things that go with meat. They carry lump charcoal for quality BBQ productions. I have bought a lot of meat from this store and today purchased a 10 pound Brisket. I always chat with the owner or one of the guys behind the counter. I have yet to find anyone with an attitude other than«Glad you stoped in… what can I help you with?» Brisket looks fantastic… pork butts are always great and at a great price. I usually by about 2 pounds of their smoked thick cut bacon and weave it into a blanket that I lay over the butt for the first 4 or 5 hours of cooking… I got the goose bumps just thinking about it. They have a small but very fresh assortment of veggies. they keep a warmer at the back with little BBQ sandwiches for 99 cents each. I could eat 20! They will trim, cut, custom do anything that you ask as long as they have it in stock. This place is worth passing up other meat markets on your way home just to go to Wilkes!!!

Out and about came up on this rare find. Great little market! All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The prices were very reasonable. The hot and ready bbq sandwiches are amazing. This place is great to run into and pick up an item and meat but not a place I would grocery shop. from now on I plan to purchase my meat here its truly a great value

Baby back ribs are cooked in the morning and priced at $ 15. I bought to slabs around 5 pm at $ 10 each. After 25 min reheat at 350 °F, my wife and I agreed that the ribs were succulent. The meat is almost falling off the bones. Lots of meat vs bones. Best value out there.
