American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) is a world renown Mixed Martial Arts academy and was recently labeled as one of the top five MMA academies in the United States by Cage Magazine. American Kickboxing Academy offers top-level public instruction in Mixed-Martial Arts (MMA), Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Wrestling and Judo for men, women and children. Each discipline is taught by world class instructors in our professional grade facility located in Sunnyvale, California. AKA has a wide range of class offerings, including Saturday classes, tailored to fit your schedule.
History
Established in 1985.
American Kickboxing Academy was started by founder Javier Mendez. Javier was a professional kickboxer in the California fighting circuit who became a two time world champion. It was during his early fighting days that fans and friends asked Javier if he would teach them how to defend themselves. AKA was born and became the premier training facility for up in coming fighters in the mid eighties. As Mixed Martial Arts began to grow in the early nineties many mma fighters began to seek out AKA ‘s expert instruction. Fighters such as Frank Shamrock and BJ Penn to name a few. It was during this time that AKA became a MMA academy focusing on teaching adults and children.

Business Owner
Alex started martial arts at the age of 14 and boxing at the age of 16. He became a regional, national and World ISKA Kickboxing Champion in 2000. Alex became Javier Mendez first trained AKA Fighter to become a world champion. After retiring from kickboxing Alex decided to begin learning Brazilian Jiujitsu. It was during this time that he began to fight in Mixed Martial Arts events. Alex is a veteran of Shooto and the WEC. After retiring from
fighting in 2005 Alex continued his training in BJJ and became black belt under Dave Camarillo. Alex is the current head trainer of AKA Sunnyvale.
