History

Established in 1975.

The current owner is Stephen Michels. Stephen’s parents (Karl and Gigi) opened the business in 1975 and spent many years establishing a good client base and earning an outstanding reputation in the community. Stephen joined the business in 1985, he and his parents were partners for many years until their retirement. The business is thriving today and the pursuit for absolute customer satisfaction is still the main priority!

Add me to the list of very happy customers. Let’s face it … Even though we always say we want to shop local, much of the time it’s easier to go into a chain store, where there’s typically better selection.
The Optical Place is the poster child for all that is good about local: an owner-​operator who is both knowledgeable and friendly; great prices; great service; and great selection.
If all local businesses were this good, Amazon would go broke.

Being broke and having my vision change radically quickly, I convinced myself that I had to shop hard for new specs. I visited 15 shops, some were chains, some warehouses and some small privately owned. Next time, I’ll just stay local. Sudbury has a gem of an optical shop. Prices are very fair, selection was the best and the service was truly outstanding.

Sometimes you just have a great experience with a local merchant in his own store, and it reminds you what you’ve given up by spending most of your money in faceless chains. I had exactly that experience here, with a friendly, knowledgeable owner, in a clean and well-​stocked shop, genuinely interested in helping our son choose and use his first pair of glasses.
