I am a buffet conniseur and this place is one of the best ones I’ve gone to. Home cooking much more so than the chain ones. Awesome dessert selection also. I just went there on Saturday and it was closed. Sad to see it go because it was great.

Decent place to stop by if you are in the area. I was impressed the first couple times I went, but I feel like it keeps getting worse. The food isn’t fresh, prices aren’t good, and your stomach will be upset after eating anything.

This is no Ryan’s! We decided to stop on our way through Virginia. Seemed like a good quick lunch option. The servers were very pleasant. Bathrooms were clean. Salad bar– Lettuce was sitting in water. Some of the veggies were soggy and not fresh. I was bit pleased with dressing options, but I am picky about dressing. «Real» Mashed potatoes had a funny aftertaste. Fried chicken was sub par. Kid liked the chicken nuggets and fries. Soft serve ice cream was good. I recommend you pass this restaurant.

I’ve been here several times over the years but it’s been a couple years at least. I don’t particularly care for buffets anymore but decided to treat myself when I was working in Winchester. It was after lunch but since it was a Sunday it was still busy which should mean turnover of food meaning fresher food. I paid $ 14.00 for this food and it wasn’t worth $ 4. The server was nice and kept the iced tea coming. The bread they brought out was dry and not at all good. I picked some meat items to include a Medium Rare cut of beef. Or so the sign says. It was WELL done. I showed the server and she left to pick up a medium rare piece as the sign shows. This one was just as overcooked so I told her to not bother. Much of the food was just tasteless and was not enjoyable at all. I figured the dessert had to be better but WRONG. The pecan pie didn’t even resemble pecan pie and was just horrible. Most everything in here was bad. I did pick up two hush puppies and could have used them as baseballs. Never again. Management, your place sucks.

so we took the long way home from the beach by accident yesterday, and around dinnertime we ended up at the stephens city Va exit on hwy 81. we couldnt figure out what we wanted and with a 4yr old in the car that is yet another concern about needing supper. well, after being in the car for 10hrs already, no one wanted to eat any more fast food… enter butcher block. I usually stay away from buffets espescially mom and pop ones(they usually lack bang for the buck and tend to be filthy). So naturally i was apprehensive. I gotta tell you… this place was VERY good. the selection was good, the carved meats excellent, the pot roast actually tasted just like my grandmas and the fried catfish was killer. th only bad thing i can say was the back dining area had a bit of a low rent feel to it(bright florescent lights and straight rows of tables). I can live with that… the food was more than good enough to offset that. so… if you are hungry and in the area… skip the taco bell and KFC and go to butch block.

Had been here before about 2 years ago and it was great. This time not so much. Food was barely warm not hot. Even fresh fried chicken being brought out was lukewarm. Food was very bland no seasoning at all. And to top it off the soft serve chocolate ice cream had a VERY medicinal after taste. Advised the manager because we thought it was bad and she knew what we were talking about and said that’s just how it tastes!!! WTH? Change brands good grief. Never going back there.

I enjoy a regular monthly meeting here. The staff is warm and accommodating. The food stays the same, but that’s ok since it ways suits me. The salad bar has fresh and crisp items and along with the food bar is always kept neat and organized . All in all, a normal buffet but in a nice place where the staff takes pride in providing a great product.

The people who compare this place to Golden Corral or Ryans are nutz! The quality of the food is head and shoulders above the competition. Fresh pulled pork, smoked loin back ribs, a nice salad selection and well prepared buffet items keep me as a regular customer. Stop after 4pm and you will find smoked brisket that simply melts in your mouth. The only reason I rate this place as 4 stars instead of 5 is because of their Friday afternoon price. They have a special seafood buffet on Fri. afternoons and the price is quite a bit higher than normal. I regularly travel between Charlotte, NC and Carlisle, PA and The Butcher Block is a regular stop. I highly recommend them to friends traveling I-81.

Really good value for the money. Our waitress and everyone working at the restaurant was super friendly. You also get a baked potato baked sweet potato with your meal. They had a nice carving station(we went for dinner). Our waitress kept refilling our soft drinks and water without us having to ask. They also have a nice salad bar, which had fresh items. I would definitely try it again!

Okay, based on the number of high reviews this place got, I decided to take a shot at it. I don’t know about the dinner, but I can certainly tell you the breakfast here is an afterthought, so much so that it’s not mentioned on their website and their«official» restaurant hours don’t even reflect it; the only reason I knew about it is because a review mentioned it. The location of this place is bad, not helped any by a sign that really doesn’t indicate much of the place’s location; the only way you’ll see it clearly is if you’re coming off the northbound I-81. Other than that, good luck. And now, to the breakfast. It was… meh. Very very meh. Not bad, not bad at all — but not good, either. Everything tasted pre-processed and for those of you who’ve been in the military, you’ll know what I mean whan I say everything reminded me of a boot camp mess hall. The staff was very friendly, but I didn’t come for the socializing. I dunno, maybe dinner at this place well outpaces the breakfast here. But what I ate today definitely didn’t convince me that a return visit is in order.

Had breakfast here one Sunday in April 2012 with a good friend of mine. The food was fresh & hot and the whole meal was cheap. A great value!

For a buffet, this place is excellent. The price is on point as well. We paid less than $ 9 each around 3:30 on a Saturday. We were there when they brought out the carving station as well. This is a country buffet and they do it pretty well. Chicken livers, fried catfish, pot roast, pulled pork, bacon green beans, mac & cheese, and plenty of mashed potatoes are present in addition to a plethora of other goodies. The pulled pork had a variety of BBQ sauces and was pretty darn good for buffet fare. Brisket, bacon wrapped turkey breast, and some kind of roast beef were present at the carving station. The desserts also were pretty interesting. They have Hershey’s syrup and Reeses peanut butter syrup for the soft serve ice cream. They also have peanut butter fudge, which was totally awesome. They also have the typical crappy buffet items, but the Butcher Block Buffet does the job and does it well.

Pulled in off the interstate on a Friday night looking for a sit down meal that wouldn’t take all night. It was seafood night, and it was plentiful! Very busy, very loud! For $ 16 per adult for an all you can eat seafood dinner, the quality was much better than I expected. Frog legs, scallops, mussels, clams, not to mention the prime rib and ham carving station. Would definitely stop in again if I ever happen past Stephen City.

Not Golden Corral or Ryans, but much better. I am basing my rating on value for price paid, and for little cost, you get a variety of good quality southern cooking. Went for lunch at 11:00 and everything was fresh and full. The strawberry-spinach-pecan salad was to die for. Luncheon menu is not quite as large as dinner(no carving station) but most of the entrees are there. I just loved the pulled pork and home-made baked beans. Also, I had lightly fried catfish, meatloaf, pork-ribs, fried onion rings, and a few other goodies. Soup was beef(hamburger) vegetable and it was tasty, as was the broccoli cheese soup. This definitely is worth going a little out of your way for.

Not great… probably wont be back. Think«Golden Corral» but with a much smaller selection and a lot less quality. On the plus side, it’s «all you can eat» so the heifers amongst us should be content.
