Egger’s Ice Cream Parlor

Today I went to Egger’s Ice Cream Parlor with my wife and kids. Before we arrived my daughter searched the time on their website, which clearly stated that their closing time was 10:30 pm on weekdays. When we arrived in the parking lot at exactly 9:42 pm, we noticed that the door read that the closing time was 10:00pm. We noticed that the chairs were on the tables and that the young staff was ready to leave for the night. We entered the establishment thinking that we could place an order for take-​out, as it was about 20 minutes to 10pm. As we walked in, an eager to leave boy on staff said that they were closed. I knew that they wanted to leave, but if a place has a specific closing time listed, they shouldn’t be lazy, and they should wait until THAT time to close. Thank God old faithful Carvel was down the block. They don’t close until their listed closing time of 10:00pm. Walked in 10 minutes to 10, and they were glad to help us.

I had their hot chocolate and was pretty satisfied. It has a classic American taste and it’s $ 1.36. The cashier was pleasant and the store was clean. Plus it’s one of those Staten Island institutions that most denizens have at least one fond memory of.

two stars because the service was absolutely terrible.RUDE. when you walk in there’s a sign that says wait to be seated i waited like 15mins until we eventually seated ourselves to only get moved about 3 times anyway. Then gave us water in dirty cups and told us they were closing meanwhile it says 10:30 online. after we get our ice cream they tell us ok we are really closing now. Nice way to push out business and make customers feel unwanted. It sucks because the ice cream is delicious and its an old neighborhood spot, but who wants to go somewhere where the workers make you feel like you’re burdening them to actually do their jobs.

My experiences here range between bad and great. So I decided to go with 3 stars, since when it is great, this place is my favorite for dessert. When you come here, do not expect to be treated like other places will treat you. Not many smiles here. But the ice cream they will serve you will smile for itself.
Now important info, if you hate to wait, avoid Saturday and Sunday afternoons, especially in the summer. If you are Ok with it, come any time.
They can easily become prefect, if they will only improve the service itself, since the place, and the food are great. I know I will visit again next time I will be in SI, I hope I will good things to update.

This is some of the best old fashion ice cream in Staten Island. The black cherry ice cream with marshmallow and whipped cream is delicious. The servers are young girls and guys and very respectful and helpful. The price is not bad for the amount of ice cream you get. If you think you can eat a 2 scoop good luck in any other place it would be at least 3 scoops.
They also have a great candy collection including candies you may have not seen in years. This place brought me back to my childhood I recommend this to everyone who loves ice cream.

Ehh service was poor. My bf took me here for a cute dessert date. Took us a long time to get seated on a Sunday afternoon. By the time we got seated, she didn’t get us water. The dessert was basic. Seem like that I could make at home. I got Belgium waffles with brownie and vanilla ice cream. I used crunch as my topping. I wish I got the fudge. It was a little dry even with the once scoop ice cream. It didn’t hit the spot and one was too big for me. Portions was shareable.

Went here recently after living very near by for a few years, wondering briefly why I never heard anyone talk about Egger’s…now I know why.
It’s dirty– why so many flies!?! Bathroom was filty, tables sticky, given dirty silverware (we were given two spoons stuck together, when pulled apart we found the leftovers of fudge and nuts had glued them together) and a hair hanging over the edge of my coffee cup. I had to swat flies away during the whole meal. The inside is old and not in a charming way, in a things are falling apart and need to be repaired sort of way.
Service– I don’t blame the group of 16 year olds that are running the place but rather the management for not teaching them any skills. Order came wrong even after having to repeat it several times. Poor couple behind us had their order taken by three different waitresses before anything actually came to the table. Had to track down the girl for our check after 15 minutes of sitting there only to wait another 10 minutes at the counter to pay while the group of teens goofed off behind the counter.
I want to believe the ice cream was good but when the service is bad and you’re concerned about the cleanliness of the place– it’s all I could focus on. Every so often we like to splurge and have a night out and especially if I’m paying close to $ 20 for two plates of ice cream (they only take cash too… annoying) –I want it to be good. I would only return if the management changed and the inside was repaired and cleaned properly.

The maple walnut actually tasted like it, the butter pecan was generously studded with nuts, and it’s just a ridiculous price for what felt like a pint (aka 2 scoops in a cup). Also, Yoohoo candy bars. Stick to takeout.

I had high expectations for the place but it wasn’t that great. My boyfriend and I shared the Banana Boat with s’mores and chocolate chip ice cream. I loved the portion size! It says it’s only 2 scoops but in reality, we got 4 scoops. The ice cream was creamy and interesting but nothing too special.
The service was great though. The server took time out to explain the different ice cream flavors and gave us so many samples. One side of the store was filled with all these kinds of candy — even old ones that I don’t even see anymore. I felt like a kid again! I would go again if I was around the area but I wouldn’t travel out there just for it.

AMAZING! The staff is very friendly and the ice cream is DELICIOUS. It’s hard to find good homemade ice cream nowadays, but Egger’s definitely sets the bar high. I’ve had peach (flavor of the month), cherry vanilla and pistachio. All the best I’ve ever had. A must go!

It’s really a shame when the service will be what ruins this establishments reputation. Best ice cream sundaes and whipped cream if you ever get it! Just walked out because was neglected. Another table was sat and the order was taken before ours.
The teenage waitstaff needs to pay attention.

I’m very unhappy with my resent experiences at Eggers. Today I got two 2 scoop ice creams for takeout and they were barely filled to the brim. There was hardly any hot fudge on either, and one of them I specifically asked for strawberry ice cream and I was served cherry. The last time I’ve been there they never have a backup stock of Ice cream so I never got to enjoy my favorites. The servers are very rude and don’t even look you in the eye, they never say have a nice day, and they all seem to be miserable. Eggers has always been a childhood favorite of mine but soon I will probably never return. Lastly I just wanted to add that the line at the register is very unorganized and confusing, both takeout and tables pay at the front and sometimes the line is out the door (not in a good way). If Eggers doesn’t change something fast I can’t imagine how much longer they will be open.

I’ve been coming here for many years. I like how the shop looks like an old ice cream parlor. All the ice cream is homemade. My favorite is mint chocolate chip with peanut butter and fresh whipped cream. The staff is friendly. Once it gets warmer be prepared to wait about twenty minutes for take out. Also, it’s cash only.

Wow, the service ain’t what it use to be! A little rude to some beautiful and sweet mature ladies (in their 60’s). They sat at a table cause standing for long periods of time is no longer what they do! The young lady behind the counter who came to seat 2 parties that were waiting spoke to the ladies in a poor manner. Your establishment was not well staffed and need a professionalism training (immediately)! Instead of apologizing she told them «You just can’t take it upon yourselves to sit» The lady said they were waiting along time the young lady employee said «Oh well were really busy» If you speak poorly to your customers they will find elsewhere to frequent! I like coming here with my family and this is the second time the service shoulda been better! If there is a third it will be my last visit. Young rude lady, one day you will lose your youth and I hope you are spoken to in the same manner or worse so you to could see how it feels! Once seated the waitress at my table (not the other girl) provided a good service. Your whipped cream had no sugar and tasted like butter as per my family…

I’ve been here so many times so want to finally write a review. How do I start? This establishment has been around for so many years so it has a lot of history and tradition. It’s expanded a bit since its original layout and also cash only.
When you walk in on the left they have children’s lunch boxes and other various things that are available for purchase. They have a great amount of candies in glass jars for a reasonable price. There’s a bar area with about six bar stools. There’s also a separate area to sit in for about thirty people or so.
They have ice cream, milkshakes, root beer floats, cones, waffles and more to choose from. I usually stick with the two scoop sundae, the scoops are rather big and it’s enough for me. This place has great whip cream and I know of some customers who go in there just to purchase that.
Their toppings are good and a good amount to choose from. It can be busy in the late evening for obvious reasons but it usually doesn’t deter the quality of service. I’ve had a couple“so-so” levels of service but can overlook it for the taste of ice cream they provide.
At times the place can do a bit better on cleaning up the tables and common areas. I think the general age of employees there is in the early twenties, maybe that’s the issue but can’t be for sure or just better management. It can be a bit disorganized when you go to pay your bill or order because it’s hard to determine who’s in line and who’s just waiting for their order.
I give this place four stars overall. The pros outweigh the cons for sure. It’s worth the trip to get ice cream and will fill you up. My only recommendation is the organization of the service and the cleanliness can use a little bit of work. Cheers.

This ice cream parlor is a blast from the past. Homemade ice cream and whipped cream. So many toppings to choose from. Counter service if you want. Also old fashioned candy shoppe bar!
Staten Island gem.

I’ve been going here all my life, but I have to say afte the last 2 experiences I’ll have to reconsider due to the dirty environment.
Tables/​Counter are filthy all the time. Even after a «quick wipe down» they are sticky because the rags the girls use are filthy. Behind the counter is filthy, and the garbage was overflowing.
Seems the owners don’t care anymore. Open you eyes next time you’re there and you’ll see that it’s declining quick.

This place is an institution.
Real thing, old-​school ice cream shop.

I wish I could have ice cream for lunch every day. Yep.
There is a long bar with old diner-​style stools to sit at, and cute dining area with booths and tables.
Scoops are HUGE. I kid you not. And oh-​so-​delicious!
Have to get banana split — Best. Ever.
It’s a tower of sweet goodness. Scoop of Strawberry, scoop of Butter Pecan for me, whipped cream and cherry on top. And some more nuts, please! Mmmmm. Heaven.

Best ice cream shop on the island. Old school fashion store with the ice cream milk shake machines, and appliances. I love the banana split! It was so good. They have plenty of flavors and toppings you can mad over. They sell lots of different candies for as cheap at 10 cents and you cant really find that no more. This place is been here over decades and still does really good and its all worth it. I def. wanna come back and try some more other flavors and have a soda float! I love and miss those. Its a cash only business also! You can sit down and have yourself a nice sundae filled with lots of whip cream and hot fudge YUMM!
PS– if you are a die hard chocolate lover like me they sell these frozen chocolate sandwiches looks like a moon pie on a stick but its all dark chocolate with chocolate ice cream and chocolate sandwich bars ITS SO FREAKIN GOOD! I DIED!!! & now I am back and will hunt this thing down every time I need my nice hit of chocolate!
NOTE to the bfs, and hubbys you wanna make a nice make up with the significant other, GET HER THIS! ITS WORTH IT! TRUST ME! She be enjoying it way to much to be mad=]

I have always had a bit of a sweet tooth (my wife says it is more than a bit!), came here right after eating at the Hungry Sombrero (they are just doors apart in the same shopping center.
This is an old fashioned ice cream/​soda shop complete with counter seating. They still make their sodas using syrup and soda water. We had the root beer float which was a great memory from childhood.
This location is over 75 years old and they have many mementos from those days, including an old milk bottle that I recognized from a Diary that used to be on Staten Island.
It is a must try if you are in the neighborhood. FYI, they are cash only, no credit or debit cards. They also have candies in jars that most people will remember from their childhood as penny candies. I guess I am showing my age.
