History
Established in 1936.
*First Motel in Pennsylvania*
A businessman by the name of Marion B. Meyer traveled from State College to Miami. In Florida he came across something he had never seen before: a service station which repaired cars and provided gas and oil, a restaurant, and a hotel which provided lodging. It was called a ‘motel’ for ‘motor-hotel’. The idea stuck with him.
He was so excited about this new way of providing services to travelers that he brought the novel idea home with him to Pennsylvania. Mr. Meyer knew that travelers would appreciate a comfortable and convenient place to stay overnight and eat a delicious meal while having their cars serviced before heading out of town, and so the Autoport was born. A manicured group of neat white cottages was built behind a building housing the service station and diner. It was the first motel in the state of Pennsylvania and has been a local landmark for 75 years!
