Donut Stop

Was excited to check this place out after seeing that it was rated one of the top 10 doughnut places in the country by the Huffington Post. I got one of each doughnut variety they had, and a few of the hand pies as well.
After trying everything they had to offer (and factoring in that one of the cake doughnuts was severely undercooked/​raw), all I can say is that there’s no way they actually visited this place, and if they did, they must not have visited more than 10 shops in the country. They are not the worst doughnuts I have ever had, but they wouldn’t even make the top 10 in the greater St Charles area. As someone who has worked professionally in a bakery that made doughnuts from scratch, I can say with absolute certainty that these are just standard, bag mix doughnuts with tub filling.
I think had I not seen the article and tried them, I wouldn’t have been nearly as disappointed, I’d have just thought they were standard, run of the mill doughnuts and left it at that. But, I did read the article, and as the old saying goes — expectations are the root of all heartache. I wanted to be wowed and fall in love, but it was nowhere to be found. Bummer.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I was so excited to try a local shop that was voted one of the best in the nation. We bought several different kinds and the one that wasn’t dry and tasted fairly decent was the fried crescent. The rest of them were dry and very dense. I don’t know who voted for these doughnuts but obviously they did not try another local shop in St. Peters on Mid Rivers Mall Dr. The employees were friendly enough and the selection was decent but those doughnuts do not make the cut. Sorry Donut Stop I wanted to like you I really did.

Small, no seating, small staff, but very efficient and friendly operation. I asked for a doughnut I didn’t see in the case and they offered to make it for me on the spot. The doughnut holes were overly sweet for my liking. The peanut butter cup was one of the best doughnuts I’ve ever had and the cinnamon glob was to die for. Will definitely be back!

No seating, so you’ll have to take the doughnuts to your car, and start eating them while you are driving off. But you’ll want to, because this little place has excellent doughnuts. They have a good variety, from the usual kind to odd flavor combinations, and they also have fried fruit pies, all of which are really good. They have short hours, from 5am — 1pm, so you know your doughnuts are fresh. And the owner is really nice and will make up a particular kind of doughnut for you on the spot if you ask and he has the right ingredients around. All in all, a great place to pick up a box of doughnuts.

The people here are SO NICE and they are so fast!!! I special-​ordered some donuts just yesterday and they had no problem having them ready at 7:00 this morning. Plus, they look AMAZING! I told them that the donuts were for my students and asked how much sprinkles would be (everything is more fun with sprinkles, after all!) and he told me it would be $ 5.00 extra. Although $ 5.00 is totally reasonable, I decided that my kids would be excited about donuts whether they had sprinkles or not, so chose to do without. When we picked up the donuts, they had given us the sprinkles at no extra charge because he knows how much we teachers do for our kids. I thought that was SO SWEET!!! Anyway, I LOVE this place and plan on going even more now than I used to. Plus, their donut holes are INCREDIBLE!!! Keep up the great work, guys!

St. Louisians are freaky about their donuts.
This place opened up a block from my house and the owner and his family live in the next neighborhood.
The strip-​mall and storefront may not be much to write home about, and some reviewers seem to care more about the décor and seats rather than what’s important. You know, like donuts.
Tim and his wife are great people and make great donuts. They hail from the same south-​county Donut Stop family and use many of the recipes that have apparently made them famous.
The donuts, yeah there are the typical ones, the interesting ones and wait. the custom ones. I saw that they had apricot filling once and Tim is like «you want that in a donut with chocolate on top? wait one second». Now, that is what I am talking about. Willing to make the customer happy. They just want to make good donuts and make a little money doing so. I can stand and eat donuts while talking to the owners. I don’t need indoor seating. :)
The place is clean and you can see every piece of equipment from the counter. The owner even taunted me and a friend once. Saying that you haven’t lived until you eat one fresh out of the fryer at 3am. Tempt me again. Ill set my alarm and knock on the glass.
In addition to his willingness to prepare custom stuff, they have some pretty unique items. The filled pies are amazing and you can occasionally get a chocolate one, if they aren’t sold out.
The true hidden gem and one that is totally addicting are the cinnamon twists. Some places just do a glazed twist donut and sprinkle on cinnamon. oh HELL no. not here. The cinnamon is part of the dough and if you don’t think it makes a difference. Step inside. I crave them.
They also have other unique items and will do custom stuff, even allow tours (so to speak) if you are interested in the process of donut making. All of this from a few visits, some small talk and people being friendly. I wish them all of the luck in the world and I will be back in. Tomorrow.

Now, like always I’ll get started with the glaring negative facts of the Stop.
1) Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, so you will never accidentally walk by. Then again, it’s St. Charles and everything is out of regular walking distance.
2) Absolutely no seating. None. You drive a couple miles out of the way of wherever you were going, grab a few donuts, and set up shop in the backseat of your car or something and chow down.
3) Their coffee sucks, and there’s no getting around that. If you want coffee w/​your donuts, drive to the gas station up the street and pour yourself a halfway decent, CHEAPER, cup of coffee, and enjoy.
Now, with that being said this spot definitely serves its purpose as a stop-​off donut shop. It’s only open from 5am-​1pm, so it’s pretty clear that they target the morning commuter crowd.
And if you’ve never heard of the original location in South County, you’re missing out on some nationally acclaimed donuts. This location serves up some of the same recipes, as well as some unique flavors (Coconut Cream Pie, Pineapple Fritters!) from the mind of the owner. You will not be disappointed in taste.
The prices are relatively low (Donut holes are 10 cents a piece!), and the short operating hours mean that the donuts are ALWAYS incredibly fresh; more often than not, your donut just finished cooling off and being frosted.
At the end of the day, if you’re the typical commuter making the trip from St. Charles to some random point in the Greater St Louis area, take a detour and grab a couple donuts to help ease the pain of traffic; You won’t be disappointed

Our first time here and my first impression was not good, mainly because they have a big space but no seating. However, once we were ordering and talking to the owner, I have to say I was very impressed with great customer service. They even sent my kiddos home with a little treat (donut holes). The donuts weren’t above and beyond or anything but they were good. They have some specialty donuts. We just got our usuals and didn’t try any this time but plan to next time.

This place lacks the mystique of the original location. We drove past this place because we thought their Donut Stop sign was actually a part of the Cashed Checks place sign next to it.
BUT
The Donuts are just as good with even MORE variety than the South County spot, as this son of the other guys is dorking around with pretty sweet fillings.
For some reason I never got the donut holes at the original location either. I had some here.
Good. Lord.
Yeah stop by they’re 10 cents a pop so it’s gonna be pretty dangerous not getting 10 and then popping them all in your mouth on the way back to your car.
