I am a sailor. There are old sailing sayings in these old parables of the sea. One of the parables is, «One hand for the ship and one hand for yourself.» Guys that worked on ships had a lot to do. When they stood and worked, they used both hands to pull in sails; they would fall over and drown. If they only hung on, nothing would get done on the ship.

I was sailing on a rough day and I was thinking about that. The sea is a great metaphor for life. In business in Michigan, what is really needed is one hand for the ship and one hand for ourselves. We have to see the value, to all of us who live here, to keep one hand for the ship.

Here the hand for Michigan requires us to work. But we have to focus, like very few other places do, more so here than elsewhere. Our ship of Michigan needs that daily focus.

That parable became an idea, through the reach we have at Hiller’s, that we would look for companies based in Michigan and seek out people who, for one reason or another, chose to go in
