History

Established in 1983.

Allison Gilbert, LMFT graduated from UCSC in 1981 with a Bachelors degree in Psychology. In 1984 at John F. Kennedy University, she received her Masters degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology, which brings together spirituality and psychology.

In Santa Cruz & Hermosa Beach, she worked under her maiden name: Allison Pokras, teaching Tarot as a self-​help tool and leading eating disorder support groups. In 1994, Allison had her first child and took 10 years off from her counseling practice, doing volunteer work in her kids’ schools, including PTA president for Westlake Elementary School.

In 2004, she started practicing again, under her married name, Allison Gilbert. She created a website for mothers called Mothers Have Needs Too and started teaching a class for moms. In 2008, Allison was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer & brings much of what she’s learned from her battle with cancer into her work as a therapist.

Allison Gilbert, LMFT is a licensed marriage and family counselor. She received an MA in Transpersonal Psychology from John F Kennedy University in 1985. She graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1981. Allison went to the University of Judaism and to the Graduate Theological Union to study Zohar with Daniel Matt. She taught classes on how to use symbols on Tarot cards for self-​help, 1985 – 1993. When her first child was born in 1994, Allison became a stay-​at-​home mom & raised 2 children. In 2005 she began practicing as a psychotherapist again & created a website to help moms & volunteered in the Postpartum Wellness Group at Sutter Hospital with Maggie Muir. Studying the Kabbalah has been her passion & her therapy work incorporates Jewish Kabbalistic principles. She works in an office as well as through the internet via a skype-​type program that offers convenient video conferencing from the comfort of your own home.
