Description

Specialties

Kenyon’s Soo Bahk Do offers instruction in the traditional Korean martial art of Soo Bahk Do.

Soo Bahk Do has roots in the ancient indigenous Korean martial arts of Soo Bahk Ki and Tae Kyun. These were combined with other fighting principles (e.g. Chinese Kung Fu, Shotokan Karate) and moral guidelines such as the philosophy of Do (Tao), No Ja (Lao Tzu) and Lee Do Ja (Confucius) by Grandmaster Hwang Kee into what is now known as Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. Soo Bahk Do (or Tang Soo Do as it was once known) is a forerunner of modern Taekwondo.

Kenyon’s Soo Bahk Do is a member in good standing of the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation®.

Established in 1968 Kenyon’s Soo Bahk Do has been in business at the same Pacific Beach location for over 40 years. The business was started by the late Fred Kenyon in 1968 and is currently run by his son, Daymon Kenyon (7th degree master in the art of Soo Bahk Do) and his wife Vicki (5th degree). Their two daughters represent the 3rd generation of martial artists in the Kenyon family. The Kenyons opened the Solana Beach studio in 1987 and it has been in continuous operation ever since.

Master Daymon Kenyon earned his midnight blue belt (equivalent to a black belt in other styles) in 1976 at the age of 12. At the age of 18, he became the primary instructor at the studio. In 1986, he was overall Grand Champion in the Tang Soo Do International Championships held in England. Shortly after his father’s passing in 1988, he earned his 4th degree by successfully completing the grueling eight-day examination (Kodanja Shimsa) required by the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, and then went on to earn the title of Master Instructor. In 2007, he earned and was awarded the rank of 7th degree.

Master Kenyon is the senior member of the Technical Advisory Committee, responsible for setting and maintaining the standardization of Soo Bahk Do techniques in the United States. He is also an appointed member of the Board of Directors for the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation. He is a personal student of current Soo Bahk Do Grandmaster H.C. Hwang.
