I just went for a cleaning and had to pay $ 106 for services that were not covered by our Aetna dmo. When the appointment began the hygienist wanted to apply desensitizing medications. I knew they were not covered, have never needed such meds in the past and declined, citing the fact I knew they were not covered by the dmo. Despite this, without telling me she was doing procedures that were not covered — like D1206: topical fluoride varnish — I was charged for these procedures.
That is just plain deceitful business. Atashbar enrolled as an Aetna service provider, but then does procedures she knows are not covered because she can then bill the patients for money she does not get from being an in network provider.
I’ve never paid anything for a cleaning under the dmo at my previous dentist.

I’m sad to see the other two reviewers have not had a positive experience with Dr. Atashbar. My spouse and I have been going to her since we moved to Takoma Park in 2009 and we have both have had stellar experiences with her as well as her office staff. Dr. Atashbar has taken excellent care of our teeth and I enjoy visiting her office, even when I have to have work done. My spouse continued to visit her for dental services while also seeing a specialist for his adult braces. We never felt pushed to buy any services and her staff has made sure that we paid only the low co-​pays we are entitled to with our dental insurance. To disclose fully, we do pay for pretty good coverage, which also helps. They recently moved to a new office, to boot, which is lovely and modern with ample parking and easy ground floor access.
Dr. Atashbar was recommended to us by friends who also patronize her. I hope that you will consider giving her a try. I am about to move out of the country and wish I could bring her entire office with me!

Something isn’t right about this dentist’s billing!
I went to this dentist for my first and LAST time. The office is lovely, the front desk staff very helpful, and the dentist is professional and seems competent. However, the billing is a fiasco. After 4 xrays and a preliminary exam (the cleaning is a separate appt) I was presented with a $ 1700 treatment plan. When I followed up with Aetna I was told that most of those charges were either covered, or were optional treatments (such as white filling versus silver for molar teeth.) I don’t want to hassle with going back to the dentist and pointing out these discrepancies since none of the work I needed done was particularly complicated. I’ll just look for a more sensible dentist.
Follow on: I went to another dentist (one I had used before but was hard to schedule with and now I appreciate why…) They are going to charge me a fraction of what Dr. Atashbar is trying to charge.

Do not take your children to see Dr. Attashbar! We found her through our insurance company and it was the worst experience. My daughter is 4 so of course was a little nervous about the whole experience. The dental technician was notably annoyed with my daughter because she did not cooperate immediately and was a bit hesitant to lay all the way back on the chair. After the cleaning was finished the receptionist told us that both my husband and i could not be in the immediate area because there was not enough room (not true!) and that my child would be overwhelmed when the dentist came (not true-​she wanted mom and dad there and we both wanted to be part of the experience). I was hoping that when Dr. Attashbar came it would make the already upsetting experience better but no such luck. She made it even worse. She was abrupt, abrasive and threatened my daughter that if she did not cooperate she would not let her go to the treasure chest! This is after she had already done a great job through the cleaning but Dr. Attashbar wanted her to sit quietly until she dismissed her from the chair. I felt horrible as a mom after i left the dental office and i hope that this review helps other parents from making the same mistake!

I went to this dentist a couple of weeks ago for the first time, and had my initial exam which I am entitled to under my Cigna Dental Plan. After a cursory exam and minimal x-​rays (no panoramic x-​rays, and no cleaning), she presented me with a $ 3,000 treatment plan with lots of stuff I considered unnecessary. In the meantime, I lost my job and my insurance is going to run out at the end of the month. So today, I called the dentists’s office to ask if I could just have the free cleaning that I am entitled to under Cigna, since I won’t have any money. She refused. She only would perform a debridement which costs $ 50. I called Cigna to complain about this, and they tried to convince Dr. Atashbar to just give me the free cleaning, but the dentist still refused. I am amazed at the greed.
