DC Movers

I used Sprint Van Lines for the move and our move was sub-​contracted or re-​assigned to DC movers. They move our 2 bedroom to another 2 bedroom condo from Baltimore City to the suburb which is about 13 miles north of Baltimore. There are 3 movers and a supervisor. The movers worked hard and the only complaint was during the last hour or so of the move, the 3^rd person was busy removing tapes (from blankets) and folding blankets to get them ready for tomorrow’s move (for another customer). Our solid oak dining table was dropped and after negotiating, we were issued $ 24 credit. There were confusion on payment method and fuel charge and was resolved when I called Sprint Van Lines customer service. I didn’t have any idea that we were moved by DC Movers (and not by Sprint Van Lines) until I saw the receipt. We were satisfied with the 3 people who moved our things because they really worked hard but were disappointed and a bit stressed out fighting all the upsells. I was informed by Sprint Van Lines before the move that we only need packing tapes to tape the moving blankets on furnitures. Our movers wanted to shrink wrap them even if it is only a local move. After too much discussion, we agreed. By the time they arrived at our place, the dining table and 2 beds were all disassembled. We packed all our personal belongings in boxes, moved all 3 big screen TV’s, pictures, computer, dresser mirror and other miscellaneous fragile things on our own. We used our own packing tapes for the furniture. We helped unpack the furniture and remove shrink wrap, blankets and tapes. My husband even helped carry some furniture. And the move still took 7 ½ hours which is more than our quote and what we expected since we did a lot of work ourselves. I just want to move on and forget the whole experience. I’m also hoping I don’t hear from DC Movers regarding my review because I can’t handle another argument on the phone with them.

I used DC Movers to load my one bedroom apartment into a pod for a cross country move. Eli was quick and responsive to my needs. They showed up at the scheduled time. Eli even came to oversee the two gentlemen. The guys were fast and nice. They managed to get everything into the pod in about two hours. I didn’t use any of their materials, I packed all the boxes etc myself. Eli said everything wouldn’t fit but somehow he got everything into the pod. He said now we play «tetris.» Overall, it was a good experience.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE DC MOVERS. THEY ARE A BUNCH OF BAIT AND SWITCH CON MEN. They did my move three days ago. A fairly simple 4 bedroom single family move to another 4 bedroom SF about 3 miles away. I will try to explain this as simply and quickly as possible. I was quoted a price of $ 120 an hour for a 4 person crew. Seemed like a nice rate so I went with them. I had boxed everything up and was ready to go before they arrived. When signing the paperwork at the beginning, Benny, the lead, mentioned there were additional charges for boxes and packing materials. My response was that everything is already boxed up, so there is no need for any boxes. He said «well… like we will use a box to cover the front of your china cabinet when we wrap it up so it wont get damaged» Ok… fair enough, but I explained I had a few extra boxes for them to use for that. So the move started and I noticed them bringing in their boxes. I told the crew to stop… that if they did come across any loose items, to leave them and I would move them myself.
I was moving things during the day in my SUV and was not keeping a close eye on them. They were very slow and took 12 hours to complete my move. When I surveyed all the items that arrived, guess what… I saw a bunch of their boxes. Uhhh… So Benny calls me over and works up the bill. Guess what… the total for this move was $ 3,836. What??? I was pissed. I made an identical move 6 months ago with Gentle Giant and that bill was $ 1,800. He explained the charges and broke out this form with the cost for the boxes I told them not to use. $ 24.99 per box. $ 4.99 per role of tape. WTF? They charged me $ 1,919 for cardboard, tape and a little bit of bubble wrap. A lot of good all that packing charge did me as they broke a 150 year old pedestal table handed down from my grandfather and my patio table. Their insurance is the bare minimum which covers 60 cents per pound. So if I put in a claim for this antique piece valued at over $ 2,500 I’d get about $ 60 (100 pounds X .60). I was so disappointed and felt like I had just gotten so completely screwed that I just told them to leave and I would fix everything.
To top it off, when unpacking these unwanted boxes, I found that they took single couch cushions, shoved them in a single box and taped it up. So my 12 sectional couch cushions cost me $ 300 to move. Why couldn’t they just wrap those up with the couch??? The last moving company did that. Anything they found that they could shove in a box, they did. It was like they were told by the company to use as many boxes as they could to suck as much money out of me as possible.
I don’t get upset that easy, but I was so pissed and disappointed that I couldn’t sleep for days. It makes me sad that there are unethical people and businesses out there. DC MOVERS IS ONE OF THOSE UNETHICAL BUSINESSES. PLEAE BEWARE. I am going to give them a chance to redeem themselves a little when I call the owner tomorrow and politely explain my displeasure. If they give me grief like they did Ralph below, I will post a follow up. If they try to make amends I will post that as well. More to come.

DO NOT EVER USE THIS MOVING COMPANY!!! DC MOVERS IS THE WORST MOVING COMPANY EVER! I have moved over 25 times in my life, all over the world, and this is definitely the worst moving company that I have ever dealt with. They arrived at 10 am to move a one bedroom plus den apartment from Washington DC to Downtown Silver Spring. There were elevators and loading docks on both ends. The entire move didn’t get finished until 12 midnight.
I scheduled this move almost a month in advance and Elli gave me a reasonable quote of $ 570.00 over the phone. I was required to pay a $ 95.00 deposit up front They were sheduled to arrive at my apartment at 8, or between 8 and 10 am. Elli told me that they could be there by 8. I knew that this was necessary because I could only schedule the freight elevator for a 4 hr. block of time in my building.
We called after they didn’t appear by 9. Elli told us that his driver didn’t show up for work, so he had to find a replacement. They finally arrived at my aprtment at 10:10 am. Aaron, the lead, was very polite and definitely seemed to know what he was doing. The other two guys in his crew were lame. The replacement driver was small in stature and sometimes only moved a pillow at a time.
The other guy was tall but when Aaron wasn’t around, they moved as slow as molasses. They were making social calls on their cell phones and laughing and joking with each other, the entire time. They did not move with a sense of urgency and acted as if they had all of the time in the world. They seemed to be purposely running the clock up. They didn’t even fill up the freight elevator and took little loads down at a time. They didn’t arrive with the proper equipment. They had to use dollys from both of the buildings. They clearly weren’t prepared. Finally after almost three hours, my building manager said that he had to let the next resident use the elevator. My movers were only halfway completed.
They had to load the truck up, go to Silver Spring, unload what they already had, then drive back to DC to pick up the rest. When they got to Silver Spring, they moved even slower. I had to stay with the apartment, because we had the cable/​computer/​telephone guy coming over to hook us up.
My wife went back to our old place. They didn’t arrive for awhile. When they get back to our old apartment they still continued to move slow. They didn’t get a sense of urgency, or perhaps embarassment until she started moving furniture too. They didn’t arrive with the final load at our new place until about 9 pm. When they arrived, Aaron presented me with a bill of $ 1570.79. I couldn’t believe it. I felt that I was the victim of a con job. I wasn’t even budgeted to spend that kind of money on this local move. But what are you going to do? If I didn’t pay him, they would’ve taken my belongings to the warehouse. It then took them three hours to finish. Aaron told me at midnight that they had gone an hour over his original estimation so he would have to charge me for an additional hour. I refused. He called Elli. And he let it go. Aaron asked me to fill out an evaluation. I did. I expressed my dissatisfaction. Aaaron said «The customer is always right.» But Elli sure didn’t act like it. He acted as if the customer is always wrong.
The next day I called Elli and told him my displeasure. Elli screamed at me for 15 minutes. I should’ve been the one screaming. He wouldn’t even let me state my case. Finally he asked what I wanted and I told him that I wanted a partial refund. He said that maybe he could give me $ 100.00 back but he had to come take a video of the site. I told him that I would Unilocal about this. He screamed again. He said that if I gave him a bad review, he would write a rebuttal, to give «his side» of the story. He then said to give him a couple of days. He called me a few days later and said that it was «the little guy» his late drivers’ fault, for everything. He said that he may be able to give me $ 100.00 but probably not. Frankly, my time is worth a lot more than $ 100.00. Elli said that he had been sick and he had just gotten out of the hospital because his life was in danger. Sorry about that. But not my problem.
My wife called him a day later and he screamed at her. He then hung up in her face. This is my Unilocal. Is this any way to run a business?
CUSTOMER BEWARE OF DC MOVERS!

I have fixed the door. Though not as pristine as before the move, I was able to paint over the damage with a paint pen and they are not as obvious as right after the move.
Additionally, they sent the addenda only after a very heated discussion and after the original review was posted. However, they only sent the editable Word document addenda (which actually does state that they are not responsible for damage) and are still looking for the signed addenda to send to me.
The matter is now closed in my mind, and even though I have finally calmed down about the experience, DC Movers left me with a sour taste. They called me this morning to ask me to retract my review, but I disagreed and stated that the review stands and that I would post this update to state that the matter is closed.

Just had DC Movers come over and pack up half of my worldly belongings and store them so my place can be staged for sale. The guys who came were polite and professional and the price was right. If I never see that crap again, it’ll be too soon. Still, I’m glad I didn’t have to pack it all myself!
