James Alan Salon & Spa

I came here last minute because my normal colorist wasn’t available… I’ll definitely be coming back. Sophia did a beautiful job on my highlights and cut and although my hair is long and there is a lot of it, she didn’t rush or skimp on the job. I’m in love with the color and loved the delightful treatment. The style that she did was the cutest!

My stylist Kerrie is fabulous and always listens to what I want done. All the people that work here make me feel welcome and appreciated. Best experience in a salon and worth every cent.

I was so excited because after moving from Hawai’i I was in need of my ‘go-​to’ salon, and with all the great Unilocal reviews, I was certain I had found it.
Unfortunately, my experience there convinced me otherwise.
Pros:
*Easy to make an appt
*Front desk staff was friendly and offered me refreshment
*My hair was styled really well (the finishing touch)
Cons:
*I felt like my stylist rushed through the [evening] appointment.
*The wash/​condition portion of the experience lasted all of four minutes (it takes me longer than this to just shampoo, and forget a scalp massage. Perhaps I’m spoiled as at my salon in Hawai’i a relaxing scalp massage was standard practice)
*My haircut was pretty much what I had walked in with (which was a pretty boring cut) despite telling her that I wanted a change and a lot more layers (I even made sure to tell her to be bold and adventurous)
She sensed my disappointment since I asked her to add more layers and tried to make up with really styling it well (which I do appreciate but the styling lasts till your next wash, the cut, a lot longer).
Overall, I expect a little bit of pampering when I go to a salon and to feel on cloud nine when I walk out. I would say that my feet were firmly on that ground when I left the salon.

Esther is amazing. And coming from L.A., the prices here are ridiculously low. Chopped off my really long hair and did a long bob. So happy with how it looks. Esther is THE hairstylist to go to in Seattle.

I just got the best color and cut ever. Tahnee was amazing! I’ve been sort of salon hopping in recent years, trying to find a reasonably priced salon near my home, and a stylist who knows how to color and cut my hair type. My hair was overprocessed and pretty damaged and Tahnee gave me a completely new look and fixed the color. I’m really impressed and already booked my next appointment.

The stylist at the salon know what they are doing. Tahnee is amazing! She was very professional and clearly knew what she was talking about. Not only did she know her stuff but she delivered. I waited a long time to get a dramatic V and my hair dyed so I had really high expectations for this appointment, I couldn’t be happier! They definitely have a long term customer with me.

Robyn did a great job with my simple men’s haircut.

This place has an awesome vibe. Everyone working at James Alan Salon & Spa seems to truly enjoy being there and good energy abounds. I’ve had my hair cut twice at James Alan and have had a great experience both times.
Chloe did an awesome job w/​my cut. She listened to a few ideas that I had in mind and asked thoughtful questions to help find the best cut for me. I left the salon with exactly what I wanted! I’ll definitely book w/​Chloe when it’s time for my next cut.
Reception was also very friendly and sincere, making visiting James Alan an overall fantastic experience where you feel like a valued customer in a relaxed, positive environment.

Never been to a salon like this before. They have fancy equipment and my hairdresser is awesome. I love that they have samples of products. It’s great I will keep going.

If you are blonde and need to maintain, or you want to be blonde, I cannot recommend Amy enough. She gets it. She is a goddess when it comes to color and she gets it right every single time.
She can take damaged, awful colored hair and make it pretty again. She can also bring you from almost black to «that looks natural» blonde, without the over processed look.
Basically, she might be Jesus.

Not impressed at all. Had to go somewhere else to fix what they did. Would not recommend to anyone.

The staff are so nice here. I’ve arrived late more than once, but they worked me in anyway. They offer tea while you wait. The ambiance is classy and soothing. I’ve received both aesthetics services as well as hair services there. They are a great contributor to the community of Shoreline, too.

I love my facials with Ed! He always does a great job and I leave with my skin glowing. I was tired of going into Seattle for a good facial and stumbled across the James Alan salon and Ed. Ed really tailors the facial to your skin, so my dry skin is hydrated and radiant when I leave. I can really tell the difference. He uses Dermalogica products, which are really good and reasonably priced. I like that he talks to you before the facial so you can tell him any concerns or special needs. I almost fall asleep during the facial! It’s so relaxing. After the facial, Ed makes a recommendation for your skin, a product or two that he feels will really enhance your skin. There’s never any pressure to buy anything. I had a facial 2 days before my son’s wedding and my skin looked fabulous! I highly recommend Ed and James Alan Salon.

The only place I go, I just love my hair stylist Amber. We have great conversation… like we known each other our entire lives! The only down fall is I don’t go as often as I would like. 5 Stars baby! If I could give you 10. I would!

Best haircut I’ve ever had. Amber was my stylist and did an amazing job! She was seriously the first stylist I’ve had who seemed to truly understand my hair type, and didn’t try to force it to be something it’s not. And she didn’t blow-​dry and straighten it after the cut, which I loved! My curls have never looked better!
The salon is very open, with large mirrors and lots of windows. The front desk staff were polite and friendly. And the prices are reasonable, which is a huge plus!
Oh, and they have their own non-​profit group that works to help girls get out of sex trafficking by teaching them cosmetology skills so they can make a living. Really cool.
I will definitely be back.

Beautiful place and services are made to order. Prices are reasonable mid-​range. Love the mission commitment from owner and stylists. They are invested in our community and reaching out globally to support opportunities for self sufficiency. Currently owner is in Cambodia setting up training center for women getting out of human trafficking and learning a trade in hair styling profession. Amy is THE BEST! I have plenty of experience over the years trying trendy places where the music is loud and the staff are more reminiscent of the high school lunchroom «mean girls» than a welcoming and soothing respite. This place is it!

This salon is excellent. I have had one session there with Matty and it was delightful.
First of all, the space is gorgeous and smells wonderful. The reception staff was sweet, there was ample parking. I was there a bit early and Matty greeted me right on time or a bit before my appointment time.
He made me feel right at ease, listened to my hair story, consulted with me thoroughly about what I wanted, adding in a few suggestions that were really wise, and got to work.
His snips were so accurate and quick. I didn’t need anything more than a maintenance clean up cut. He did such a good job. The cut really flows well with my hair’s kinks and odd waves. The back lays perfectly all the time, which it definitely wasn’t doing before.
I’m looking forward to my next snip!

James Alan Salon, after years of searching, is my salon of choice for over a year. The staff is very friendly and colorists are amazing. I have not had a «line» other than my grey yet as my roots grow out, which means I can always look professional.
Recommend!

Amber is my gal; I know her personally, even before she started working here. She had her eye on this place and really wanted to be part of this salon. When she was finally hired, I made a mental note of it because I live in Shoreline.
My mom has always been my hairdresser; when she moved to Las Vegas 5 years ago I had to learn how to color my own hair. After a year of doing it solo I finally broke down and started going to a salon. I started with Supercuts hoping to save some money but that was shortlived because you get what you pay for. I then tried Habitude in Ballard (I opted for the fresh out of beauty school stylist) but that was also short lived because of the attitude. Then I went to Rudy’s in Ballard & Phinney; both stylists were great but I noticed the color wasn’t lasting past a 3^rd or 4^th wash. Plus I didn’t like the price i was paying.
My boyfriend’s mom who has also become my personal hairdresser lives in Salt Lake City, so between me doing my own hair and the two out of state moms, I finally broke down again and thought I’d give Amber a try. And I think this is where I will remain loyal outside of the two moms — and to myself :)
I live in Shoreline and love that A) I know Amber, B) I had a wonderful experience, C) Amber totally matched my color to what they had, AND i’m on my 4^th wash, still looks awesome, D) this salon is right down the street from my home, and E) this color was suprisingly less than i expected and I will be back. I don’t think I’m going to color my own hair anymore because of the whole package.
In addition to all of this, James Alan Salon is involved in the coordination of a nationwide collection of stylists to provide on-​going inspiration and education to Cambodian women rescued from human trafficking along with the young women at risk. They also offer their employees the option to contribute a portion of their paychecks towards this wonderful cause. This philanthropist busines acumen runs very close to my heart and I am happy to be supporting it natually.
