Sherwood Ice Arena Complex

Sherwood’s Ice Arena is a good and fun place to go skating. The environment is friendly. The staff is pretty polite. It was busy but not too crowded. However, the skates are not very comfortable and left blisters all over my feet. The blades were pretty dull.

Sherwood’s Ice Arena is the best place to go skating, the people are mostly nice, but here’s the thing, the food that they sell in the snack bar could be better, if they made it better I would give it 5 stars.

The Sherwood Ice Arena makes the Lloyd Center Ice Rink look good. I celebrated my daughter’s 7^th birthday at the Sherwood Ice Arena last Saturday. I was about 10 minutes late because of the horrendous Sherwood traffic. Everyone should be warned that if you want to get there at a certain time you should allow 15 extra minutes for Sherwood’s horrible traffic. After I arrived I only had a few minutes to get the info about our party package but they seemed to be in no hurry to help me get situated. After they finally sorted out my paperwork, an employee showed me where the party room was. That was it. So I rushed to tell everyone what was going on, where the room was, and to check out skates for my daughter and our guests. A minute after I had done that another employee announced that our skating lesson was about to start. He asked me to help round up our guests. I was like, «OK,» while I struggled to put the crappy skates on my daughter’s feet. Then I found out that one of her skates had a broken plastic shard sticking into the top of her foot. I was frantically trying to fix it when the guy announced again that the lesson was starting. So I was like, «Hey, this is the birthday girl and she needs working skates.» They switched the broken skate out for me but not very quickly. They had a hard time finding decent skates for us because they DO NOT HAVE ANY GOOD SKATES. Their skates are basically plastic shells of torture with blunt blades stuck to the bottom. I was able to skate for about half an hour at a time before the pain became unbearable. Some of the other people in our party fared better, but everyone’s skates were deplorable. And when you’re giving your bludgeoned feet a rest, don’t even try to buy a pretzel or corn dog unless you want to wait 20 – 30 minutes (no exaggeration). But my daughter was in birthday heaven so she didn’t care, and I think all of our guests had fun. That is the only reason why I’m giving them more than one star.

my son goes here for hockey, and the coaches are just so amazing! they are so patient with them and really get them motivated to do better. I drive an hour every Thursday to take my son to this and it’s worth it my son loves it. he has improved so much in just a short amount of time and it’s all because the coaches.

Great family skate place. Great for hockey stick time and pick up games. Skate shop attached. Always check hours on their website for special events and public skate sessions. Private skate lessons also available. You won’t find an ice rink that has this type of schedule anywhere near Portland.

Be ready for nostalgia! This place is great fun– a throwback when you first walk in, but one of the cleaner rinks I’ve been in. Very friendly staff, never really had to wait in line for much, and as a former competitive skater, the ice is wonderful. Seriously!
If you’re down for skating, this rink has some of the best time offerings, staff, and ice in the area– go be a teenager again! It’s fun, I promise!

Our first time skating was at Lloyd Center, which tends to be crowded. Not exactly the best thing for beginners, so we were thrilled to find the Sherwood Ice Arena had very few skaters when we went. It did get more crowded due, I assume, to kids getting out of school later in the afternoon, but it was perfect when we first arrived. The other difference compared to Lloyd Center was the temperature. Sherwood was much colder! At Lloyd Center, my hands were sweating inside my gloves, while at Sherwood, my hands were getting cold. My feet were numb by the time we left, but I don’t know if that was from the stiff, uncomfortable skates, or the cold. I do believe Lloyd Center’s skates were slightly more comfortable, although I did have to exchange skates there once, to find a pair that would work. I’m thinking that if we are going to skate on a regular basis, it will be worth it to buy my own skates. For the kids, Sherwood’s skates were easier to deal with, as they had buckles instead of laces.

My children take lessons and public skate here all the time. This is the cleanest facility in Portland. The staff is great and know my family by name. Friday Night Disco Skate is great. Mostly middle school age kids, my younger skaters (5,6, &10) feel right at home and comfortable.
If your looking for some hockey time, they have a variety of options. From what I hear they have top notch leagues as well.

My first visit 6÷14÷2013
The lighting in the skate area was dark and dangerous. No ambient lighting. Viewing areas were chained off. And your 1 guard for both sessions of open skate left the rink on enough occasions that I alerted the lobby staff.
Dayna, who identified himself as the manager, and 2 staffers informed me that it is stated on the website that Friday nights are disco nights and therefore the house lights are left dark. I can’t find this info on your site.
Dayna also assured me that my concerns were of no consequence, citing multiple times that SIR has been operating for years without incident.
The first guard of the evening, left the ice unattended several times to socialize with the DJ, hug and visit with other guests. The second guard of the night left the ice so much that Dayna could not find her.
Blocking fire exits in a dark and unsafe environment is not something your manager should happly defend. Dayna failed as a leader and representative of the faility on my visit and needs to really be retrained.
Since this complaint, I have received 2 emails from Michael apologizing and offering some explanation and proposed the solutions.

Great deal! Friendly service, clean & fun! Snack shop is cheap! Freezing! Lol… they keep the ice COLD & if you plan to watch, or skate… Gloves and layers are a must!

The ice arena is clean. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The management is well-​coordinated and were more than accommodating to the group that I brought in during the summer. It was amazing experience to bring my kids to. Yes, there were some other people there, we were not the only ones. But I wouldn’t call it overly crowded. The skaters were also respectful of my girls trying to learn and one of the teachers even helped one of my girls up from the ice to help her get off. I can’t wait for warmer days to cool off at this place. It was fun, affordable and best of all, taught my girls a lesson in persistence and resilience. They had to keep getting up and trying, this is an excellent lesson for kids to learn. Overall, I give them 5 stars for all aspects. Thanks again!

I have been impressed, first with the Learn to Skate program and now with the Learn to Play Hockey.
My son’s situation presents some difficulties, first of all, he is with me every other week and the programs are geared for once or twice a week, SIA has been very good about working around this and my son has not missed any instruction. He is also mildly autistic and has other issues, the instructors have been VERY good about working with him, for the most part they haven’t even known about his issues, they are just good at working with everybody at their level. My son loves every minute on the ice, and the exceptional instructors are really good at making sure the kids have fun and learn too. To add to the other reviews, yes, the staff is friendly, I have not met anyone who was less than really pleasant. Also, yes, it’s cold — having grown up playing hockey and spent a fair amount of time at ice arenas, ice tends to be cold, and ice is better for skating when it is colder (up to a point), so if you are watching — dress warm!

This place is cold! I’ve come here to watch hockey games and wish I would have worn more layers — jeans, galoshes and a coat don’t cut it. There was plenty of room for the parents to heckle the ref and the parents of players on the opposing team. If you come here to observe a game, layer up and bring a blanket to sit on because the bleachers are cold.

Friendly but sparse staff at open skate.
The zam left the ice super wet and there wasn’t much supervision to the masses of children getting onto the ice after re-​surfacing.

Quality facility, a number of options for stick and puck, and affordable. Very friendly staff to boot!

My son takes ice hockey lessons here and the coaches/​instructors are fabulous. They are very accommodating and take good care of us.

Sherwood keeps their rink cleaner than our other local rink. While the place gets trashed during public session, it is cleaned shortly after and ready for hockey in the evening. Staff is young but competent and friendly. Plenty of parking and has skate shop attached which is owned by two WONDERFUL men. The ice is nicely cut but can take a beating after the Hawks skate on it. Locker rooms are cleaner than most and have showers. I’ve never tried the rental skates.
