Salon Joseph

As a Seattle transplant, this was my first hair experience in the city. I received a $ 20 off coupon in the mail, and since Salon Joseph had good reviews, I figured I would try it out.
The coupon is only good for apprentices, not «sr. level» stylists, which was interesting. I figured they wouldn’t put their reputation on a newbie stylist, so they must be decent.
I booked my appointment for the next day with Cassandra. She was very nice, and she consulted with Joseph a couple of times to confirm the hair color and cut I wanted.
The good:
— Was able to get next day appointment
— Very nice staff
— Fantastic color process. My hair color is hard to get (IMO, anyway), and was a primary reason I kept going to the salon in AZ that I frequented. It matched about 95% of the color I go for. Just a bit brighter and it would have been 100%. I have red hair (extremely far from natural!), so this was a good rating for me. Also, my roots were at least an inch, and you cannot tell whatsoever that I went that long without a touchup– the transition from where my hideous roots were, to the ends, is seamless!
— Cassandra was precise and took her time, and did a great job.
The not so good:
— I tried to walk in twice to book an appt or get a pricing consult, as the hours are until 7. Once at 6PM, once at 5PM the next day. Both times they were closed. I live down the street so I finally learned to just call.
— Called during business hours once, no answer. Called again the day before my appointment, was asked in the quickest possible way to please hold, then was forgot about. I hung up after five minutes. This almost made me not go at all, but they are literally so close to my house, I wanted to give them a shot.
— Rinsing chairs and the sink are not the most comfortable. Maybe it’s because I’m tall (5′ 10″), but usually this is the most relaxing part of the visit, and it was not.
Overall, I’ll be going back due to the hair customer experience.

I love getting my hair done by Monica! She’s amazing! She is so thorough and my hair always turns out looking fabulous! Go book an appointment with her and let her work her hair magic!

My daughter and I both have been going to Monica for about 2 years. We have both been extremely happy. Monica is both a skilled stylist and colorist. She will work with you to give you what you want but prevent you from making big mistakes! And like most of the employees, she’s friendly without being overbearing. The atmosphere of the salon is mellow and the prices are decent.

I went to salon Joseph about two weeks ago which means it’s been 14 days that I’ve had to wake up to this horrible horrible hair.
I went in for a haircut and an ombré. I showed Lisa a picture of exactly what I wanted. She said it wouldn’t be hard and started. She cut off at least 8inches which was ok until she ruined my hair with layers and gave me a hideous bob (that I specifically said I didn’t not want). She did the ombré before she started the layers so most if it was cut off and it’s like she didn’t even do the ombré (but I sure did pay for it). The highlights that are left are not properly blended and have defined lines and starting points.
My hair is now too short to be up in a ponytail so I’ll be wearing the top layer of my hair in a woman bun for the next two months. Ugh. Not cool.
Two stars for the salon because they gave me coffee and it’s a nice place.

i am obsessed with my hair. it is very peculiar and has a mind of its own.
my friends were shocked i willingly moved to seattle and wondered how my mental health would be bc of seattle rain.
it was never easy for me to find a stylist that would understand my hair AND me.
i need a relationship, a friend i can trust with my hair.
so when i say monica is the person to see, rest assured i mean it.
monica will tell you what can be done with your hair, and what are just your dreams. she is an amazing stylist, has a great sense of humor, and just plain gets me. she is super accommodating and makes the visits to a hair salon more like a girls’ day out.
i almost feel i shouldn’t be writing this review, for i never ever want her to become too popular and leave me.

I’ve been going to Ashley at Salon Joseph for over three years now, and I really cannot believe I haven’t posted a review yet. I spent ten years bouncing from salon to salon until I found her. First of all, she is an amazing person. She remembers everything about you and I have a blast coming in to see her. Oh yeah, and did I mention she does AMAZING hair.
I moved from Queen Anne to West Seattle awhile back and made a horrible mistake by trying out a local salon… worst decision ever. When it’s amazing, the drive/​bus ride is worth it. Her color skills are top notch. She’s done everything for me — matching my natural color, subtle highlights, chunky highlights, blue and purple highlights… you name it and she’s an expert. Her hair cuts are amazing — she never takes off more than you want and you leave feeling great. She listens to you and is honest about what your hair can take and doesn’t try to get you to come in more often than you need to.
I’ve even been able to get my boyfriend to go to Ashley when he isn’t trying to grab a quick trim during his lunch (he looks so much better when Ashley cuts his hair!). My daughter has now become an Ashley fan and says she wont go anywhere else.
Go there — see Ashley. You’ll be happy with your hair!

Fabulous, sweet Jenn has done my hair for over a year. She consults with me every time. I receive many compliments on my color and have been stopped on the street to ask where I have it done. Salon Joseph is professional and friendly. I highly recommend Jenn.

I had my hair cut and balayaged by Jennifer. I picked her because I read on the salon website that balayage was her specialty. I wanted a natural ombré look. What I got was a chunky and lumpy looking all over foil and the worst haircut I’ve ever had. Jennifer even noticed the blobs of random bleached color in my hair and said she would fix it, but she never did. The haircut I received made my hair unmanageable and unruly. All I wanted was a trim on my existing long layers, which should have been very simple. I went back to get the cut fixed because my hair just didn’t sit well anymore. Jennifer thanked me for the feedback (which was sweet) and blended the ends to help it sit better. This made it worse. The blending made my hair look messy and in need of a haircut. It still did not sit well.
I also asked for my hair to be curled after one of the times I went. She said she would if there was time. She said this while blow waving my hair straight. Then said we were out of time.
Jennifer seems like a lovely person but her work was sub par and not what I asked for. I gave her two chances. I will not be going back.

Just as promised, when I got back to the states I rented a car and drove 3 hours just so David could cut and color my hair again. He is the best! I always leave feeling amazing and have been getting many compliments on my color. He knows what he’s doing and I won’t go to anyone else. Definitely worth flying halfway across the world for!

So I left Queen Anne for awhile, but now that I am back I realized I needed to go back to Salon Joseph! I had grown out my hair for my wedding and was ready for a big chop and new style, so I went to see David Hewitt at Salon Joseph. He was amazing! Easy to talk to and spent time asking me what I wanted and discussing options. I said I love the look of a side bang but hate the maintenance and he helped create a great alternative for me! I love the cut and am looking forward to going back to David for some color. Clean and spacious salon with wonderful people and an easy location. Highly recommended!

I was referred by a friend to go to Jennifer. From the moment she introduced herself all the way up to walking me to the front and sending me home with an appropriate product. Nothing but accuracy. She listened as I explained the look I was going for. She was very detail oriented about how she explained what we were going to do. Never had I received such a thorough consultation. I am so happy!
I have longer hair and usually stylists don’t know what to do with it. I walked out of there feeling like I had Victoria Secret hair! I will continue to refer all of my friends! Thank you Jennifer! You are talented!

Edit: adjusting my review to 4 stars (from 2). I contacted the salon and they had me come meet with Jaffra (another stylist) who completely redid the cut and it looks great! Would recommend her (not sure what her rate is though?)

Very unhappy with my basic haircut with Jennifer. I have long hair and usually get extremely basic long layers and blow dry my hair straight, one of the most basic haircuts out there yet she managed to completely butcher my hair. I haven’t been able to wear my hair down since and now am going to have to lose ~5in of length instead of the 1.5−2 I wanted.
$ 50? No thank you. I could have gone to super cuts and gotten a better cut for ¹⁄₃ of the cost.

I’m new to Seattle, and was very stressed at the thought of finding someone new to entrust with my blonde hair. Luckily Unilocal didn’t let me down when I was lead to Salon Joseph. I called the salon and the receptionist recommended David for a full highlight. He did a full consultation and asked lots of questions about what my previous stylist had used on my hair. He did an amazing job and was really fun to talk to (not necessary for a stylist, but always an added bonus!). It looks like my hair is naturally blonde, and the trim was great as well. Prices are what reasonable for a nice, centrally located salon with experienced professionals. A younger stylist appeared to be shadowing master stylist, possibly the owner, so it is apparent that the salon encourages continuing education.
If you need a new salon, I’d recommend Salon Joseph.

I’ve been going to Salon Joseph since I moved to Queen Anne just over three years ago. I had a great experience with a stylist who has since moved to another salon (too far away for me to travel), so I decided to stay with the salon even when he’d departed. For the past year, I’ve been seeing David, who has been nothing but outstanding.
For a long time, I’ve struggled to get my hair to grow past a certain length. Part of the problem is that my hair is fine, breaks easily, and grows slowly. The other issue that I’ve had for years is that stylists tend to take off just a little too much. What seems to them like a normal, reasonable amount of length to trim off will take me four months of growth to regain.
Since I’ve started seeing David, this has not been a problem. My hair is the longest its ever been, it looks healthy, and I’m extremely happy. He’s also done a brilliant job with very natural looking highlights that don’t require a ton of maintenance (I only have to do it every 4 – 5 months).
I’m not much one for writing reviews, and so despite being very happy, I haven’t really thought to do this until an experience I had last weekend. I was at the salon for highlights, and at the last minute, David and I decided to do the Express Keratin treatment following my highlights. Of course, as happens, it was taking longer than either of us expected. In order to allow my husband to make it out for guys night (I had agreed to be parent-​on-​duty for our baby for the night), David actually packed up his stuff, came to my house, and finished flat ironing in my treatment while I held my baby daughter. We did it in the kitchen with the window open and the hood fan on high so that the baby and I wouldn’t get any fumes. It was way above and beyond. David is THE BEST. I cannot recommend this salon highly enough.

Admittedly I ask a lot of a stylist — not only does my hair need to look amazing when I leave the salon, it also needs to look almost as cute when I neglect it at home. I have an aversion to styling products and a personal aesthetic most accurately described as «terminally lazy.» As you can imagine, I end up disappointed more often than not.
This is why I’m convinced that Ashley might be a witch or possibly part unicorn. She is the rare stylist who can transform the garbage I give her to work with — my inconsistent hair texture, myriad cowlicks, and the aforementioned laziness — and consistently deliver a cut that even I can’t manage to muck up styling.
I found Salon Joseph through Unilocal,so I’m passing on the info to others who might be in search of a new stylist. Just make sure you book your appointment with Ashley well in advance so that she might still have an occasional last-​minute appointment available for me, okay?

So this is an update to my previous review about Salon Joseph and specifically KaraLee. For this review my sister was in town and had a bad coloring at another salon (think auburn/​dark red) when she was looking for a medium brown. KaraLee was amazing and we showed up late on a Wednesday and she said she was more than happy to help my sister to try and correct the color.
She took over 2.5 hours to try and correct the color and was so amazing! She did everything she could and even explained to my sister the process and what steps she would take to make the correction. The color turned out great! A HUGE difference from before and something my sister was actually good with having in public, unlike before.
I cannot give enough thanks to KaraLee for how great she is as a person and as a hair stylist.

I just finished getting a cut and color from
Ashley. I have to say that she really does a beautiful color. My hair was brassy and she gave me beautiful dimension. This lady really knows her color! I feel like a new woman. As for the cut, it is a modern uncomplicated style that I will have no problem working with. Ashley is fun and happy and makes you feel great. Definitely going back to her.
The salon is a pleasant space with relaxing lighting. You are greeted with friendly smiles and the atmosphere is relaxing. If you are looking for an easy, nice and wonderful new place to pamper your locks, check out Salon Joseph on Queen Anne and sit in Ashley’s chair. You’ll be happy!

I was referred to the salon by a couple of friends and went to see Kelli to for an all over color and cut. She did an amazing job!!! I posted a picture of my hair so you can see the outcome. Since it was my first time there, the consultation portion took about 15 – 20 minutes. She also asked the right questions and consulted in her mentor for ideas on how to get my hair exactly how i explained it. I appreciated the time and care that was put into my session. Most importantly, for hair that is challenging to lift, she did an amazing job with getting my hair the caramel brown I was looking for. She also advised that i add some blonder tips to make it pop. David Hewitt is the man of your dreams. Okay, a bit dramatic, but when it comes to your hair, it’s true.
I’m from Chicago and am a client and huge fan of David’s. You may be wondering why someone from Chicago is reviewing a salon and stylist in Seattle, but bear with me. David moved to Seattle from Chicago. In a previous review, I said I’d follow David to the ends of the earth. Well, I’ve gotten as far as Seattle. I visited him in December and had the works — color, highlights. and cut. It was hands down my favorite look ever. This is a testament to David’s comfort and confidence at Salon Joseph. The salon fosters such a nurturing, encouraging, and supportive environment which allows each stylist to aim high and shine.
David is in an amazing, creative place right now. He’s focused, fearless, in the zone, and having the time of his life. This energy rubs off on everyone he meets. He can look at a client and know exactly what will look fabulous.
You’ll be hard pressed to find a better eye for gorgeous color and phenomenal cuts.
Run, don’t walk, to make an appointment with David. Don’t worry, I’ll wait :-)

Monica is so great. She saved my hair. I came in with a bad cut and bad color. My previous hair dresser said he couldn’t change the color. She fixed it and the cut. I have curly hair, which some hair dressers have trouble with. She is super nice too! She also comes in early so I don’t have to miss work.
Monica also did my hair for my wedding. It was beautiful! I felt like a princess. She even came in on her day off for this. She did my mom and my sister’s hair too. It looked beautiful, but not too crazy and big like some brides.
I don’t think you will be disappointed if you go to her. She has great ideas and keeps up on trends. She is very passionate about hair. Her prices are very reasonable too.
