Do not go here! I’ve been here multiple times, and it’s always a bad experience. They never have what I am looking for, messy and overpriced. Not to mention the owner is a creep who will try to assault you on your way out.

Very very creepy dude here! Tries to assault women. He also sells expired food! Do not go in there!

What a creep, he tried to get me and my friend to stay. He followed us out to the street telling us to come back in. Pushy salesman or pervert creep? Maybe both.

DO NOT GO HERE. THIS MAN HAS COMMITTED MULTIPLE ACTS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. He is touchy with his customers (despite women telling him to stop) and has even turned off the store lights and locked a woman inside in attempts to assault her.
This place is not safe for women. Please do not go here and spread the word.
On top of that, he sells very expired items, charges cards wrong, and will deny people who have valid 21+ ID’s.

I posted the picture about the girl who almost got assaulted at this store by the man working there. Many girls have had similar experiences. Do not go there if you are a single female/​avoid it even if you’re not.

Word around the U-​District is that the old dude is a perv who WILL try to assault you if you’re a female.

Don’t EVER go here) I used to buy beer at this place but the last time I went in, he charged my card twice for my purchase. That wasn’t a big deal to me, but I just told myself I wouldn’t go back. The owner’s english is really bad and I wasn’t sure I could communicate the problem to him.
More importantly, I will be seriously and outwardly avoiding this place forever since last weekend when my friend was locked in and cornered in this store by the owner. She was alone and it was late at night and he tried to sexually assault her. Since she’s shared what happened, I’ve read a lot more of these instances from other young women. He must do this a lot.
Please by all means avoid this place

Great selection of paneer and spices (prices are about the same as the Souk’s), but the cashier accidentally charged and reversed $ 1,018.60 to my debit card! Bank nightmare.

This is probably the best Indian grocer in the university district. The choices are slimmer than you’d find at a typical store on the east side, but they’re good enough to purchase the basics and more. The prices are either similar or slightly higher, but it’s a convenience store right?
Sure, it’s probably a good idea to check the expiration dates on some items, but if you’re buying rice, spices, frozen goods, indian snacks, etc probably you’re fine because the turnover on these items is fast enough.
I’ve noticed they sometimes divide up big packages of rice and spices into smaller ones. This has been useful for rice, but I’d be careful of spices done this way — they loose their freshness twice as fast. Just buy the bigger bag and put the excess in an airtight container in the pantry.
The older man that often works speaks little English and isn’t much help besides ringing you up, but he’s friendly enough to smile back. The woman is very nice — she’s friendly, speaks English well, and is willing to answer questions and chat a bit.
For the people complaining about having difficulty returning expired items. They’re already on sale — Safeway/​QFC use this same tactic and I’ve wasted money on bad perishables. Just do your due diligence when you go into a small Indian grocery store. It’s a different experience than an Americanized Walmart.

The groceries at this store are usually expired, and the quality of products is very poor but the prices are high. The old guy who works there is really rude, dishonest and disrespectful. Refused to take back expired product when i tried to return it in 20 minutes. I complained to the women who is usually at the store (i think that old guys’ wife) and she was like he can never do that and blah blah. This one time he (old man) was busy flirting/​talking with this girl and did not even acknowledge that a customer is waiting in line.

Slim pickings. A lot of expired stuff. Some of them actually had the expiry date blacked out intentionally. When I asked him about it, he blithely responded that it didn’t expire.

Beware of the expired products.
These guys deliberately put the expired products on the sale. Many products don’t have expiration dates. I had bought Dosa batter, which did not had expiry date, and I was told by the owner that its freshly arrived. It was rotten when I opened it. I should not have believed them in the first place.

There is not other indian grocery store in the area, which they take advantage of.

This guy is a FRAUD and cheater.. He has mostly expired things in his shop. We purchased sweets and noodles from his shop which expired last month. Unfortunately, we didn’t check expiry date before buying them. When we reached home we noticed that both these things were expired more than a month ago. Next day we called him to inform that things are expired but he started shouting on us and saying that «It’s your problem. You should have checked it before buying». He bluntly declined to take back these expired things and hanged up phone.
Later I found out that someone else also got fooled in similar way by this store.
Now I am trying to find contact details of some consumer care where I can complaint about this store for keeping expired things and saving someone else from becoming a victim of his fraudulent activities.
If someone knows where to complain then please tell me else I am sure I will be able to find it very soon.
I wish I could give negative star to this store.

I just moved to Seattle and desperately needed to stock up on Indian spices, and this place was perfect. They have tons of spices (in very large quantities too) and very reasonably priced. They also have other essentials like chutney, naan, tea, ginger garlic paste, Indian snacks, etc. The owner is very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be coming by here periodically to get supplies.

If you are looking for Indian Spices nearby seattle, one should go here. Just that they dont keep veggies, but they had the whole coconut. Very choosy and picky about the stuff that they have kept, but it helps. I was glad to have something nearby and the prices are nominal too. We bought the sweet corn flour, which tasted good for breads.

The spice there are really cheap in compare to the grocery store like Safeway or trader joes

If you’re still buying your spices from the grocery store, you are getting ripped off. I don’t know where else in the nation, let alone crazy-​expensive Seattle, where you can get a big ziplock baggie full of spices (garam masala, ground ginger, cinnamon sticks, etc., etc.) for just $ 1.59. They don’t have everything you’ll ever need spice-​wise, but they have a great selection and it is all VERY inexpensive.
The samosas he keeps in the fridge are a delicious snack, too, whenever he has them made up. The older gentleman who runs this store is a sweet, kindly, soft-​spoken man who always has a smile and a little bit of polite conversation. This store is a total gem.

Two things R&M had that Wholefoods didn’t: black lentils and mustard oil. The first time I went to R&M, the owner was very gracious and gave me a personal tour of the store. I will be back for paneer and bulk spices! And lentils.

Well, you know. There’s Indian spices, tea, lentils, rice, pickles, snacks, sweets, convenience food. If you want Taj Mahal tea or Parle-​G biscuits or garlic pickle or a zip-​lock bag of garam masala, and you don’t want to drive to the Eastside, this is where you come. There’s a shelf of dusty VHS Bollywood movies in the corner and some slightly withered curry leaves in the fridge. In short, this is exactly the same as every other Indian grocery in the US, but smaller. And I agree with Abigail that the perceived rudeness was almost certainly a misunderstanding; the guy running this place is a friendly middle-​aged chap.
I don’t know what the $$$$ rating is all about. Where else can you get 1lb of decent tea for less than $ 6?

I’ve had nothing but affable interactions with the father and son of R & M. My hunch is that the worker did not understand her question on the phone and his straightforward explanation was misinterpreted as rudeness.
I stop in bi-​monthly to stock up on dal, curry leaves, pohe, green chilis, jaggery, tamarind, ghee – for the same reason as Sunil K.: it saves a schlep to the east side. I chat with the owners about what I’m cooking and they’re always genial and sincere.
The shop is small, but the bulk spices (cloves, cumin, turmeric, peppercorns, mustard seeds, cinnamon sticks – anything you need, really) are super cheap and offered in tidy baby ziplocks. I’ve also bought mammoth bags of basmati rice and can assure that they were nicely priced and bug-​free.

UPDATE 5÷28÷08 Ok, so rice is less nicely-​priced these days all around (up 8% in the last year) ! PSSSST ! rice shortage ! Don’t take it out on the little guy.
