Counseling is the formation of a unique, confidential, objective interpersonal relationship that is respectful, emotionally safe and fosters an environment in which to explore emotional, mental and behavioral events and concerns, both past and present. The individual seeking counseling wants to overcome obstacles to lead a life that is balanced and fulfilling.
People generally strive toward a life that has meaningful relationships, meaningful work, and personal pursuits that renew and enhance a sense of positive self-esteem and life satisfaction. The role of the therapist is to act as a guide, using professional objectivity, knowledge of human psychology and work experience to help clients find answers to problems or paths to more satisfactory lives through their own strengths and getting new ideas and perspectives.
The benefit of therapy is achieving these goals. The risk of therapy is dealing with painful experiences of the past and present. That is why therapy differs from the advice of family and friends. That is why therapy is done with someone who has no agenda for the client, other than his or her well being.
