Specialties

At Deft Digits, I offer private lessons on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, ukulele, and electric bass. All ages, all skill levels. Come to my Seattle studio (in the Ravenna/Wedgwood/Maple Leaf area) or Skype in from anywhere. The bulk of every lesson is spent studying and mastering your favorite songs. I want to get you playing the music you love as soon as possible, because that’s what makes this so fun!

Here’s what separates Deft Digits from the rest:

I take notes during and after every single lesson, so I remember what we did and where the trouble spots were. I really care about your progress and enjoyment; you’ll never find me just going through the motions.

I insist that all of my students learn to read standard music notation (sheet music), not just tablature. Most non-professional guitarists never learn to read music, but I’ve developed my own curriculum that makes the process painless while the majority of lesson and practice time are still spent playing the music you love.

I hold several informal recitals every year (I call them Showcases), allowing students of all ages a chance to share the music they’ve worked on in a safe environment.

While I love teaching kids and beginners, I have the musical knowledge and chops to take you as far as you want to go. Want to play like Jimmy Page? Stevie Ray Vaughan? Wes Montgomery? Eric Johnson? Al Di Meola? John Petrucci? Django Reinhardt? Let’s do it!

Meet the Business Owner

Joe W.

Business Owner

Hi! I’m Joe Walker. I grew up near Seattle and started playing guitar at 14, obsessing over alternative rock and blues. I started teaching lessons during my high school years and couldn’t believe how much fun it was!

In 2005, I finished a BS in Computer Science at Harvey Mudd College. Around that time, I co-founded indie rock band Blue Judy. We performed all around Los Angeles and placed songs on TV shows like 90 210 and One Tree Hill. I dropped everything in 2007 to spend a year practicing guitar 12 – 16 hours a day. When the year was up, I moved to San Diego, joined the award-winning Led Zeppelin tribute band Dazed and Confused, and earned a Master of Music in Jazz Studies at SDSU.

In 2011, I moved back to Seattle and started Deft Digits. Now, in addition to holding down part-time stay-at-home-dad duties with two wild boys and maintaining a full roster of fantastic students, I organize a monthly Meetup group for Seattle Music Teachers to network and share teaching tips.
