Viera Whitemarsh

First, the good:
One could not ask for a better location. 15 minutes from the beach and from downtown either way — Whitemarsh preserve about 3 minutes away with all sorts of trails for hiking and biking. Grocery and drug stores, and restaurants just minutes away.
The residents here are for the most part amazing. People are friendly and I have been fortunate to have some really good neighbors in my immediate area. There is an off leash park for dogs.
Now, the not so good:
The complex recently changed ownership, so I suppose it is wait and see…
Like previous reviewers have mentioned, roaches are an issue. The pest control company has recently changed, and now service is quarterly for everyone. Previously, one had to phone in advance to request the monthly service, which was largely ineffective. I ended up purchasing my own products to get the issues under control.
Maintenance seems to be a problem. I have had several non-​trivial issues that have taken multiple visits to resolve. I don’t know whether it is the maintenance staff being overworked, poorly trained or their morale being low… but it is ridiculous how many visits/​how long it has taken to get some of these things cleared up. Even things that are supposedly emergent like no air conditioning have taken up to 4 days to be corrected, and it is impossible to get a consistent story as to the status.
For what I am spending here, I would expect much, much better… and if the lease is renewed the rent will go up.
It’s really a shame that the office staff is not more responsive, because my apartment is super cute. If everything weren’t such a hassle here, I would want to stay here a long time. As it is, though, I can’t justify spending what I do for such poor customer service and maintenance.

From the looks of it this place seems ok. Outside is a little dated, but overall the property is kept clean and tidy and the apartments are cute. Nice pergo flooring, updated fixtures and decent sized rooms with walk in closets. Being close to the beach was definitely a plus and part of why we wanted to live here and not in downtown Savannah. However, there were a few things that need to be mentioned about the Viera Apartments at Whitemarsh.
1. ROACHES — Lived here for 6 months and from day 1 we had ROACHES. I thought it was a seasonal thing and they would go away but they only got worse. WAY WORSE. I mean, they were everywhere. The biggest one I saw was the size of my thumb. The kitchen had the most of them and I would wake up in the morning to A DOZEN of them roaming the counters, in the coffee maker, the toaster, behind the oven etc. IT WAS GROSS. We found them inside the Keurig. and even more gross? That’s where we found that the eggs had hatched! We brew coffee out of that! We had to throw the whole thing out! I had mentioned the problem at the beginning before they got too bad and the pest control would come once in awhile but they would spray all over the place and it made me so nervous. I have a cat so I was concerned about her licking it and they would just leave puddles of this stuff around the kitchen. I had to leave the apartment or open all the windows just get air it out. They say it’s safe but how safe is it really? And they would put this powdery stuff all over as well. I think it’s boric acid and it’s said to be safe but it was all over our dishes and silverware and it just made me feel dirty. Besides, roaches are the dirtiest pests. They eat trash and can live forever! No amount of cleaning or scrubbing would keep these creatures away! I’ve recently moved and although I tried to clean and disinfect, as I was unpacking I have found 6 roaches! They were in our kitchen ware and even found some in my clothes! I swear if an infestation starts at my new place because of this dirty ass complex, someone is hearing about it.
2. CUSTOMER SERVICE — Customer service here is mediocre. Everyone is pretty nice and does help you out but there are definitely some shady things that go on. There was a break in to some of the mailboxes and we were never notified. It only occurred to me that there may be an issue when I came back from vacation and was supposed to be getting some holiday cards. When it was mentioned to the front desk it wasn’t until THEN that they mentioned that we MAY have been one of the mailboxes that got broken into. WHY WASN’T THE ENTIRE COMPLEX NOTIFIED OF THIS BREACH? Stealing mail is a FEDERAL OFFENSE and I wasn’t told that I MAY HAVE BEEN part of this? Not only is that illegal but it’s sketchy as hell. This issue was never resolved.
3. READ YOUR LEASE CAREFULLY — In the lease you agree to have the maintenance guys come into your house at any time to fix things while you’re not there. You have to request to be notified or they will just walk in. I worked from home and almost got caught in the nude because these guys just OPEN THE DOOR. Scared the crap out of me and once I complained about it, they noted it on my account that I was to be notified ahead of time but NOT UNTIL I BROUGHT IT UP AS AN ISSUE. If I wasn’t home, I wouldn’t know when people would come in an out. (Although I believe it says that they’re supposed to leave notification that someone was there, I never received anything.) That creeps me out a little bit and doesn’t seem right. Just something to be aware of since that seems to be their policy.
Note: The complex just recently got a new management company so I’m hoping a lot of these issues will be resolved now that they are under new management but it’s worth noting the above issues that we had. I move a lot for my husbands job and understand the importance of having a good understanding of what you’re getting yourself into.

My apartment is adorable! My neighbor is so kind! I’m new to savannah and everyone here is so nice. I back up into woods so I have tons of privacy. No issues with service yet, I had to call in a broken washer and they fixed it in an hour. Haven’t needed to use the fitness room or pool but overall like my complex.
