Savannah’s newest craft brewery is on its way! We love great beer, good jams, cool people, and generally having a fun time! We strive to create a fresh variety of brews to accompany our wide appreciation of music.

Southbound Brewing Company will be a microbrewery located in Savannah, Georgia. Southbound anticipates being the newest craft brewery in the state in early 2013, and we aspire to become the most innovating and exciting yet. We want to use our backgrounds, skills, and insights to shed light on the beauty of the craft beer industry to our local community. By bringing the American craft beer revolution to Savannah’s back door, we hope to cater to the tastes of the South by tantalizing your taste buds and keeping things interesting!

History

Established in 2011.

It was one of those blissful overnights in the Georgia Tech library when Smith was doing his usual mix of dozing off and dreaming, but not studying. After years of fighting off thoughts irrelevant to his degree, he came to the realization that he could only focus on studying a subject about which he was truly passionate. That got him thinking, trying to figure out what it was that he was truly passionate about. What he came up with was beer. Yep, beer. Smith was a homebrewer at the time and had recently started working for Sweetwater Brewing Company with his friend Carly, who was in her second year of working on the marketing and events staff for the company. He soon left to join the small Charleston start up as the Head Brewer and then called Carly down to join the team as the Marketing and Events Coordinator. After a while, the two decided it was time to follow their dreams and start their own brewery. Southbound Brewing Company was born with their love of both beer and music in 2011

Business Owner

The founders consist of Smith Mathews and Carly Wiggins, life long friends from Statesboro, Georgia. Smith, Southbound’s Brewmaster, earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Georgia Institute of Technology while working at Sweetwater Brewing Co. throughout college. Smith was accepted into the fall 2009 class of The Seibel Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois and Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany. Carly Wiggins, Southbound’s Marketing Director, also attended college at The Georgia Institute of Technology. She received two degrees from Georgia Tech in Industrial Design and Business Administration with a Marketing concentration. Carly began working for Sweetwater Brewing Co. in 2007 doing marketing and events.

The two worked together to assist opening a small startup brewery in Charleston, South Carolina and then decided it was time to start a brewery of their own. Together they designed the name, structure, and style of the company.

Took the tour and really enjoyed it. We’re huge brewery tour fans so we really couldn’t wait for this during our recent stay in Savannah. Beer was great. My wife enjoyed Transilience. The atmosphere was laid back and the tours were super casual and as informative as your questions wanted. Really friendly employees. Kids were welcome (stay 6′ from the bar). They have a couple homemade sodas on tap, but make sure your kids like them first before you buy a bunch of soda tickets. The Ginger Ale might be more spicy than they’re used to. The orange soda was great.
Tier pricing for tours is new here, but honesty there might not be a lot of value for you in the «backstage» level which is $ 10 more. You can choose any 6 pack, which has some value if you’re into more expensive offerings, otherwise it only gets you an extra 32oz beer in a growler (64 instead of 32). Chose thoughtfully.
The best deal is in the 6 tickets for 6oz pours which are typically more like 9 or 10oz. Pretty buzzed walking out of there. Had a great time, and was really impressed with their operations.

My wife and I were in Savannah for the night and after walking around River St for a while came here because I love breweries, been to several dozen across the US. This was the most fun I have had at a brewery in a while. The staff are knowledgeable and had a good time with the tour. The beer was equally great and incredibly diverse. The passion fruit IPA was incredible. They had corn hole set up in the brew house for goodness sake!!! I cannot recommend this more highly!

While planning a recent trip to Savannah, I stumbled upon Southbound Brewing on Unilocal.My boyfriend and I love beer and brewery tours are one of our favorite pastimes. We planned on visiting as soon as we arrived, so we came early to enjoy a beer before their 5:30 tour. Unfortunately, we failed to realize that the breweries in Georgia are a little different than in Florida. They were only open for two hours, so arriving early was pointless as we sat outside for about 45 minutes. It wouldn’t have been terrible, since another pair had done the same thing and we enjoyed a nice laugh about it, but the weather was shoddy that day and the dumpster located near the front door was particularly pungent. Yikes.
Despite the bad timing on our part, we stayed from open to close. We each paid $ 15 for our tour and it came with a choice of a six-​pack, a 22oz. bomber, a growler fill, or a souvenir pint glass. Each tour also includes six tickets for beers, although someone in front of us didn’t drink and she purchased the «soda tour» for only $ 3. Our tour guide was the hilarious Jasmine. She knew a ton about the history of the brewers and the beer that Southbound makes. We were able to see the milling process, the tanks, and even the fridge!
My favorite beer was the Scattered Sun Belgian Wit. I used most of my tickets on these. I did also try Clusterflies, a Saison aged in red wine barrels. I was even pleasantly surprised that I could handle Moondance and Rockin’ Chair since I’m really not a dark beer person for the most part. Killer Queen was the only beer I tried that I disliked. Sadly, there was a sour (my favorite) being brewed during our visit that wouldn’t be ready for a couple weeks. However, I was able to take home a 22oz. bomber of an IPA that Jasmine assured me that I would enjoy.
On a side note, we made plenty of new friends during our short time at the brewery. Everyone was just so nice! The vibe at Southbound is very laid-​back; there are large, colorful murals on the walls and cornhole boards if you’re feeling frisky. The beers weren’t all my style, but I will definitely visit again if I’m in the area because of the atmosphere and friendly staff.

Pretty bummed about the setup of this place. We stopped in hoping to just try a beer or two, but the only way to try anything is to go on the tour for $ 15 a person. We weren’t even able to split the tickets for the samples, so in order to try anything at all, my husband and I would have had to pay a minimum of $ 30. I understand they are unable to directly sell beer due to state law, but it seems like there could be a more efficient (and cost effective) system for customers who don’t necessarily want 6 samples and a tour. Disappointing since it seemed like a cool atmosphere.

Last call at 3:30?! And $ 15/​person minimum regardless if you want the tour… I understand the state law screws you over, but a poor execution of a solution. We were looking forward to checking out this brewery only turn around and waste $ 17 on an über ride. Definitely won’t attempt again.

This place was nice for an afternoon; the beer was pretty good. Great size pours, too. Great people, which led to a great time.
They did a very nice tour which we enjoyed. We liked that they had cornhole to play, and they had live music which was really great.
There was only 1 bathroom for the whole place. which made no sense, and there was always a big line which was rather inconvenient. They could really use more seating also — some tables with benches would be nice.

Although it’s not walking distance to all the things in Savannah, you definitely have to check this place out. For 15 $, you receive 6 tickets, a glass and the tour. Or if you don’t want the glass you can get a six pack of your choice. It’s an awesome experience, usually brewery tours kinda cut back on the amount of beer they give you/​give you samples. This place is not one of them. Most of the beers were 1 ticket, there were two beers (higher alcohol %) that were worth two.
Also park in the back not the front! (Shorter walk)
The employees are super awesome and very friendly! And the environment is very mellow and welcoming.
I’m definitely going to come back to this place!

The tour is well worth the price of admission. The location is not convenient to walking tourists. The beer was overall not our taste. My husband thought the Hop’lin was fine as he enjoys IPAs. I like a lighter beer and only drank the wit, so my tasting of the beers was very limited. The tour is a great deal — 6 – 8 ounce samples with the option to take home a glass or bottled beer. Learning about the process was great. The staff thinks their product is much better than it actually is. It was a fun afternoon. The location is not a great area (boarded up houses) so consider getting some transportation.

My husband and I wanted to see what Savannah had to offer in terms of breweries on our recent trip and this spot didn’t disappoint! Recent Georgia laws have changed the rules when it comes to breweries so we didn’t have a traditional experience. However, we were able to pay $ 15 each for a tour, six samples and pint glass to take home. We opted to trade in one of our pint glasses at the end of our visit to take home a bottle of the Loving Cup, a saison with a slightly tart finish. I would also definitely recommend the Hop’lin IPA for a delicious and lightly hoppy IPA and the Clusterflies, which is aged in red wine barrels (you can really taste the red wine undertones!). The bartenders were really informative and generous with their pours. Be sure to check the website for tour hours. Definitely worth a visit!

Had a great time at this place; excellent crew working here. It’s a humble place, but that’s what makes their brews so special! The bartenders knew EVERYTHING about their brewing process and the different beers. I forgot the young lady’s name who gave us the tour (she had dark hair and glasses,) but she was fantastic. She answered every question with confidence, had an approachable demeanor and really talked us through the microbrewery. This place was a great way to taste the beers of a local company to add to the trip.

My husband and I decided to visit Southbound Brewery on 4÷9÷15 while visiting a Savannah, GA.
I also had a voucher for this location. (The glasses we got to bring home as part of the voucher deal was a nice souvenir.)
The night we picked to visit happen to be the same night for an event they were hosting to raise money for MS. I actually thought the charity event was nice idea. However the live band (although very good) in my opinion distracted from our tasting experience. It was very hard to hear when the band was playing. Our tour guide had to shout while the band was playing. If they use a band again I’d suggest working with the band to make sure the brewery tours are not happening at the same time.
However with all that being said I had a great time.
People were super polite (and I never felt rushed while we hanging out at the bar) and really liked the variety of beers the brewery offered. I also thought our bartender provided great service.
The brewery is very clean and has a cool vibe to it. They have murals on the wall giving this factory a bit of artists touch.
My only compliant like most craft breweries Southbound is located in an industrial park. My husband and I decided not to drive (so we both could enjoy the tasting experience) and called a cab to pick us up (after one had dropped us off with no problems). It took the cab over 40 minutes to get to us. It would not have been a big deal had we felt safe in the area.
I would recommend that Southbound possible work out a deal with a cab company in the area to have a couple of drivers swing by to see if anyone needs a ride at and/​or around when they’re tasting hours are complete.

Pretty good brewery. Definitely the best one in Savannah and maybe all of GA. Limited selection, due to the size but overall good beers.
Six tasting tickets for $ 10. The big beers require 2 tix per taste.
The best is the Reaper (Belgian Quad) and the Scattered Sun (Whit bier). Too bad the law doesn’t let you buy beers to go. Sign the petition people! That law is lame.

This place has a private parking lot for you when you arrive. You can do a six ticket free sampling in a small cup or opt for the pint glass sampling for ten bucks. Really enjoyed almost all the beers we tried. Had a hell of a time with the people who work here last night. Hope they get some stickers by my next visit.

This is a bang for your buck kind of place. For $ 10 you get a pint glass with 6 drink tickets that allows you to taste all the beers! The brewery is small and the tour lasts roughly 20 minutes. From there you can go straight to the bar and drink and learn more about the beers you are drinking.
Check the website for tours as they have limited times available. Cheers!

Really enjoyed the atmosphere here during a tasting on a Saturday afternoon. Not only did they have multiple cornhole boards, they also had live music (which was really good!). My only complaint is that the bar area get’s really crowded and it’s hard to walk around (it’s about 20ft from a wall), and there is ONE bathroom for the whole place (the line was HUGE!). Otherwise I think there beer was tasty and it was a fun time.

My husband got in touch with Smith (the owner, who’s also one of his fraternity brothers) to get us in a few minutes earlier than the regular 5:30 tour, since we had to be somewhere on River Street at 6pm. We parked around «front», under the sign that is visible from W Bay Street, and a nice gentleman directed us around the side to the tour entrance.
The tour is a good deal — either free tasting cup (think plastic shot size) or $ 10 for 6 tickets. They’ve got about 6 beers on tap, and even had a cask-​conditioned brew as well. They’ve got signs on the machinery, explaining the process, so you don’t necessarily need to listen to a speech. They’ve got cornhole boards. They’ve got a Big Ass Fan (yes, that’s the brand), and when they open the loading dock doors it’s quite pleasant.
The space is open and bright, conveniently located close to the River Street area (only about a mile walk, and there are sidewalks). When you pass the Great Dane, hang a right, and walk around to the back for the tour.

Southbound makes some great beer. You can find their beers all over Savannah and Tybee and I believe they are in Jacksonville and Charleston now as well. The Savannah area was in need of a true craft brewery and Southbound more than delivered. Personally I love their Hoplin’ IPA and Iron Lion Pale Ale but all of their beers are good. Definitely try the Moonlight Drive (Coffee Stout) and Day Trip’eler (Belgian Tripel) if you see them.
The brewery is now open for tours Wednesday-​Friday from 5:30 — 7:30 and Saturday from 2 – 4. It’s only $ 10 and you get 6 well portioned tastings. You can get a free tasting cup too but don’t do that… you definitely get way more than your $ 10 bucks worth in beer and fun. Saturday tours have live music as well. If you didn’t pick up on it, all of the beer names are associated with music.
I definitely don’t consider myself a beer aficionado, but I do drink a lot of craft beers and love them. I think Southbound is one of the best breweries around and you definitely need to check them out ASAP if you have not already.
