I understand that it’s not wide enough for two-​way traffic, but the waiting-​at-​the-​light thing is totally ridiculous. Did I mention that I love it?
My niece wasn’t as impressed as I assumed she would be, but once we got to the Marine Mammal Center, she was floored and saddened-​in-​the-​right-​way and spurred to action/​thought/​contemplation. My parents think she thinks too much. I don’t know what my sis thinks. Me, I’ll take a chip off the old block. Hey, at least she’ll end up taller and prettier than me. She’s already way thinner.
I wouldn’t want to ride a bike through here.

What can I say, it’s a hole in the ground. lol

There is a five minute light at this tunnel as it has one lane for both directions. There are a few pot holes that need fixing. When I was little I was a fan of the tunnel because it seemed to be the gateway to somewhere special-​a secret passage. In reality you can also take the coastal road.

As we approached the tunnel, we made a hard stop due to the red traffic light. The sign indicated a five minute wait duration. At first this seemed odd, but then realized the tunnel only had a single lane for both directions.
Once we gotten the green light, we were on our way. I’m unaware on the age of this tunnel, but it does seem pretty old. Upon exiting at the other end, we’ve found cars waiting for their turn as we did.
Beware that cops are to be found hanging around by the entrance. There’s a perfect spot where they park their patrol cars. It’s no way a speed trap, but worth mentioning to be on your good behavior.

This tunnel seems to be the best way to get to the Marin Headlands. I don’t mind the five min. or so wait to enter this one-​way tunnel. Now, I don’t have any phobias and normally tunnels don’t bother me at all. However, this one terrifies me. It’s old and narrow and I have seen water dripping down the side. I think it will cave in. I want to close my eyes, but they are wide open with terror. I can hardly breathe when I am inside. It is a nightmare!
It is the same feeling as going on a death-​defying ride at an amusement park. I try to hold by breathe until I get off the ride, or in this case out of the tunnel. Then I find myself back in line to go out the other side and experience the terror again rather than drive over the hill to leave the Headlands.
This tunnel does deserve four stars for giving me a thrill ride that is a lot less expensive than admission to an amusement park.

This is my favorite way to go into the Marin Headlands. Why? I can’t really explain it. But every time that light turns green and I drive into the tunnel, it’s like I have a mental reset. I know I’m on my way to do something fun, or if nothing else to take a drive with views that are spectacular.
5 Stars for a tunnel? I couldn’t imagine giving it anything less!

I LOVE this tunnel. It has a lot of interesting energy in it and trippy vibes. Also great for the old childhood game of trying to hold your breath through the entire tunnel. Worth driving through just for the fun of it.

Super long, one way, concrete tunnel to the beach??? SOLD! Like others have said it’s a five minute wait but it is a tunnel of fun that will bring out your inner child-​like curiosity.

WAIT THE 5 MINUTES!!! Trust me! …also, it’s not actually 5, more like 3.5 mins.
This tunnel rocks! Why? It’s like a real life version of the wardrobe to Narnia. Seriously, you go through this crazy long concrete passage and when you get to the other side, you emerge into a whole new world, affectionately know as The Marin Headlands.
Beware of the incessant honking, look out for the cyclists, and don’t try to walk through!

This is my favourite way into the Marin Headlands, even though you might have to wait several minutes for the light to change. This bore is a bit old, long, and creepy and worth it every time. What I like best is that it makes me feel that I’m passing through the space-​time continuum into another world. I sometimes make it a point to go the Visitor’s Center to orient myself, or I just head straight to the (Rodeo) Beach!

what the hell was our taxi driver thinking? it’s a one way traffic tunnel and we had the red light! no, thanks! i value my life tremendously, thank you very much!
but five minutes?!? damn! =(pretty cool that it was my first one way tunnel though. wish my picture of the 5 minute stop light sign didn’t come out blurry. would of helped if our driver wasn’t going like 45 mph through the tunnel LOL glad there wasn’t anyone walking or biking when we went through

I rode my bike in this tunnel yesterday and honestly I was frightened!
This tunnel is old and scary, I was riding my bike forever in this tunnel and its only one road and a car was driving full speed towards me and I honestly said to myself for a second oh god is this where I’m gonna die, then the car finally slowed down and I rode closely to the wall of the tunnel which was dripping stagnant water, with moss and a petrified haunting appearance on the walls. This tunnel is creepy, but pretty cool, and relieving when you finally reach the other side you appreciate the outside world so much more.
This is the longest and skinniest tunnel I have ever been in before!
